I would love to get people involved, but the people who ARE interested in the cause either have like 10W AIO computers, or are little snots about their hardware, or can't really afford the 24/7 folding electricity cost.

I set up a team for a Discord server I'm a member of (the r/mac server), but despite some interest from a few people nobody ever joined. I ended up just letting an old 2009 Mac mini fold by itself, and there will forever be 1.6 million points just sitting there.

Yes, it's a Mac-focused group, but plenty of the people who are active there also have powerful non-Mac computers. Plus, F@h does alright on macOS so long as you don't want to fold on a GPU. I've got an old 2011 iMac folding right now, and it gets about 35K PPD.

@Shlouski Had an "ah ha!" moment today. I was looking at the specs for GPUs on Tech Powerup and realized that the peak efficiencies I've observed are all around the Base Clock for all the GPUs I've tested so far:

GPU    Base Clock
1660ti   1500 MHz
2060     1365 MHz
2060s    1470 MHz
2070a    1410 MHz
2070s    1605 MHz
3070     1500 MHz
3070ti   1575 MHz
3080     1440 MHz

So it is not surprising you found a Peak Efficiency on the 4090 around it's 2235MHz Base Clock

I would include dams, but our regional hydro isn't that much, mostly serving the communities and direct area it's in. Same goes for solar and wind, still waiting on larger scale deployment.

I got two people signed up - one of them had a GTX 1070, but he set his PC to full folding power (so CPU + GPU) and his motherboard blew up before he even submitted the first WU. Then 2 or 3 days after that the COVID lockdowns were announced and he couldn't get his motherboard replaced for the next 6 months, he didn't have his gaming PC for the whole time! Thankfully he's a very close friend (it's his GTX 1070 that I'm using in a secondary PC at home right now!), and I'd been telling him I had concerns about his motherboard for a while before that, so no worries there.

 

The other guy has a laptop with an i3-5005U and he got into folding for Dogefolders for a month before he became concerned about the longevity of his laptop and then stopped. He knew there was no money to be made with Dogefolders, he just liked the idea of getting something in return that wasn't just a number on a board.

we have the Percy Preist Lake Dam (28MW) Baically only operates for peak loads for the nerds this is what we have powering us in Tennessee and some of the souurounding areas controlled by TVA

Nice mix.  Our region is nicely displayed by our regional energy grid operator.  It varies a bunch over time, but a live mix is the front page.

During a bright and sunny day throughout most of New England, solar will produce a reasonable enough amount to "duck bill" the power curve for the region during the afternoon.  We are a natural gas heavy system overall though, with no real natural sources and almost no piping.  It is an overall fairly "clean" grid, but drastic hits from natural gas pricing are happening right now.  We're regulated so the consumer kW/h rate won't change until the new year, but we're expecting it to double yet again.

That's why you build something like it, rather than buy one.  By building it yourself you use a normal solar DC charge controller along with a float type AC battery charger.  Then you just set the AC charger to only keep the batteries at a slightly lower than full charge voltage, and the solar to keep them at full charge voltage levels.  This will basically make the unit a solar powered double conversion UPS with whatever size battery bank you want, so you'll always get perfect power out the back side, and most of it will be made by your solar panels, at least when the sun is up.  If you wanted to focus more on self consumption than backup power, you could set the "full" voltage even lower on the AC charger.

We run our mine site off 4 massive marine diesels. It’s way more common than people realize

Genis would be my assumption considering most mines are in less accessible locations so wont have infrastructure

not just that, but diesel is a light fuel oil, it can be used just like other fuel oils. Either in a ICE or a thermal plant of some kind

Is that a Quadro M5000? I've been wanting one of those for a while now (roughly 5 years or so), and I almost pulled the trigger on one a couple weeks ago. How well does it do in F@h? I love the look of those dual slot blower Quadros.

I have added a secret weapon to my PC, something none of you will have seen coming:

 

 

A GT 1030 getting 1.4 million PPD! I'll just head over to eBay and buy a whole bunch of these along with some PCIe risers, and in no time I'll be outperforming everyone else!

 

In all seriousness though, I am actually pretty pleased with the GT 1030 for Folding@home. On average I've seen this card get around 130K PPD, which isn't too bad for a low power card that barely gets warm. Mine is a GDDR5 version that I got for free earlier this year, and I figured I'd see what it can do for folding.

Correct. I’m a couple hours travel to the nearest town. Part of that is a 45 minute boat ride where there’s no roads.
