Summary

A new kind of ransomware virus has appeared on the sign - GoodWill. It forces victims to complete three activities and post them on social media for their files to be rescued.

Well that’s different. I’m curious how many have been affected and if they’ve done all three tasks.

Extortion.  Just like any other ransomware.  Hubris on the part of the black-hats who designed it to presume they know the "moral standing" of the afflicted parties.  Worse, those who are more trustworthy souls are probably already showing acts of kindness on a regular basis--AND more likely to fall victim to stuff like this ransomware....because of said trustworthiness (and the behavior patterns that come with it).

 

Nor is putting yourself on social media of any benefit.  I really hope snakes like the ones who programmed this shit get a long prison sentence....just like all the other malware programmers that got caught.

Well got to say this one is a bit unique.

 

Wonder what is going on behind the scenes with these people.  Either they are messed up thinking they can extort people into doing good deeds, or my other guess is that they are using this as a cover for something else (e.g. like if they have it doing bitcoin mining and this is their attempt to make it look like they are doing something more "legit")

Imagine trying to explain to the court that you only lured those children into your van to take them to pizza hut to get your anime folder unlocked.

I shouldn't really have to say this and don't take it the wrong way but Activity 3 is a very targeted demand aimed at certain countries. As person, one of many and in many different countries, that have access to free universal health care completing this activity is near impossible. Basically nobody is in that situation here.

 

So I'd be doubled screwed as I don't have "social media accounts" and I'd never complete Activity 3, oh well goodbye files lol.

 

This is seriously stupid and lame, hacktivism at it's dumbest.

 

P.S. Also screw anyone affected by this that is in financial hardship who would lose their files or be worse off if they did this stupid crap.

Part 3 is horrible. What if someone would rather not have their medical status shared with a random third party? The person recording is incentivized to not share that they are recording the recipient because they just want their files back. 

 

Not to mention, what if this ransomware targeted a hospital, like wannacry did? So much for helping others

I don't really think I'm comfortable with forcing people to do "Good".

But, the image of the irony if someone like Kim Korea or a enfarious villian with an evil plan was subject to this…

This does nothing productive. People arent homeless and cant pay medical bills because their community is too mean to them. A $5,324 MRI bill after insurance or a debilitating mental illnesses no one wants to deal with is the problem. So maybe target the actual source opposed to the tail end of the ones affected. The idea sounds good in a 14 year olds head but is a farcry from anything viable

I'd have to drive a good hundred miles or more to find a legit, living on the streets homeless person.  My whole county has just over 10,000 people, only about 1,000 of which are residents of the city, and we don't have any kind of a homeless problem, so I'd have to drive to the nearest decent sized town to find a homeless person to help.
