Anyway, prices will be just as high or higher than the 2000 series. It will only drop in price if AMD has something.. You can bet Nvidia is expecting the answer to be a big no.

 

 

As for the power consumption claims. I just want to remind people, this wattage that is floating around is not clear that it is the power usage of the GPU. Some news outlet makes the assumption, but it is just a figure.

 

If it is not for the GPU, possibilities are:

Nvidia's power consumption estimate power usage from the perspective of a power supply (for you to calculate on the PSU wattage you'll need). So 350W, + wattage of the rest of your components = The PSU you need. Nvidia has the habit of assuming the worst of the worst PSU being used, where it can barely deliver the rating marked, so more is reserved. You will notice that no GPU from Nvidia reaches the power consumption mentioned (in the recent years).

 

OR, it could be simply the chip TDP, which isn't the power consumption.

OR the maximum heat dissipation abilities of the heatsink can clear out.. which probably designed to assumes a hot system.

 

So don't take it as hard fact, is all I am saying... let's wait for more information, is all I am saying

I just hope that this time we'll get actual improvements on the FPS/$, so i kinda hope that they won't be increasing the prices by almost the same % as the performance increased like they did with Turing.

 

The 350W/320W numbers are supposedly the TBP.

I'd only end up buying the model that's twice as fast as my 1070 with the same power consumption if it exists...I want large leaps forward as an upgrade, not baby steps (hence not upgrading from my 4790K until now).

That is kind of how it always was... any new x60GPU was about last gen x70... and new x70 usually battled it out with old x80s.

Not the "3060 being about 2080 tier". That's been true for the 1060 being about equivalent to the 980 and the 2070S being equivalent to a 1080 Ti, so those are just about taken for granted. 7nm should bring significant improvements in performance-per-watt, so general improvements in rasterized performance is just about expected.

 

Just that some of the other stuff, like "ray tracing with no performance impact" and some of the other stuff seem a bit too good to be considered true at least for this point in time. There are obviously going to be very significant improvements in both RT and deep learning performance, perhaps to the point where Turing looks comparatively meh. I just don't think we're going to be massively blown away and if we are, that it would also come with a "gotcha", like pricing.

 

I'd love to be proven wrong at launch, so excuse my skepticism on at least some of the rumors. I just prefer to take a slightly leaner approach on this. My best expectation is that we're going to see Pascal-tier improvements in efficiency at least, alongside significant improvements in RT and DL performance.

This time not only the 3060 on par with 2080 performance. So is the price. Nvidia being Nvidia.

I will be pleasantly surprised if they can compete with the 3080ti. I would imagine they would only compete with the 3080 but I would like to be proven wrong. Also I believe the rumors about the 3080ti being 1000 again. I dont they would increase the price that much from last gen but I also don't think they will lower it.

Let's be honest they are doing in node shrink like they did with the 10 series and that ended up with the 1070 being the equivalent of the 980ti so I would not be surprised at all if the 3070 is the performance of the 2080ti.

That’s about par for the course. Even the 2070S is about the equivalent of a 1080 Ti after driver optimizations.

 

I too wouldn’t be surprised at all if the 3070 is roughly the performance of a 2080 Ti. But we’ll have to see how much it costs.

Yeah it will be interesting because I believe all cards are supposed to have raytracing so you won't see gtx cards like we do for this generation then the question becomes how do they fill in the price gaps like they did with the 16 series cards? Maybe they will revert back to normal pricing for the lower teir cards and keep the 3080ti at the higher price.

iircc some tech youtuber mentioned back on a GTX700 or 900 series release that the cooler usually cost about $100 minimum to manufacture or something like that, it's seems like a $50 bump if that's the case,  i mean given the situation now with the market crash & all. it's kinda inevitable to having it priced up like that.

It's it just a way for them to not compete directly with AIB partners? It's like how some manufactures sell their products for insane prices as it's just meant to be a showroom than a market place. Also I hope we see some innovation for these cards and I'm getting tired of $1200+ GPUs

If we look back to when AMD moved to 7nm, what were they saying? You can have either the same performance at half the power cost, OR use the same power for xx% more performance. I found one AMD slide listing 35%, and I think they had some variations of this depending on product and time. You then have to decide where you fit on that scale. A typical high end consumer GPU might be 250W, and more for extreme overclocking cards. I think it reasonable to assume the highest end cards will top out in power in a similar region, as that is already acceptable to the enthusiast community. So applying the same power consideration, we might see around some tens of % performance improvement at a given power level.

 

It is also very possible to choose to operate in the more efficient zone. For example, consider the 75W cards that don't require external power connector. The best you can get in that power budget is currently the 1650. If you just took that and put it on 7nm and from that turn up the clocks, you might get up to a 1650 Super performance level. A bit of an uplift, but not that big a deal. However, if you go large and run a 7nm 2060 in the more efficient zone, that could be a lot more interesting, at a higher manufacturing cost which is why it probably wont happen.

 

There is opportunity to tune exactly where the product sits, both in terms of comparing against current generation, and also what the competition might be expected to come out with.

 

And a random thought to finish off. There is a big difference between "the cooler adds $150 to the selling price" and "the cooler costs $150 to make". Many are saying the 2nd, where they might mean the 1st.

I'm thinking that it'll probably have a good deal more performance than the 10GB on the 1080ti. The overall effective bandwidth is probably going to be a lot larger due to the faster memory used as well as really good improvements to compression that Ampere is supposed to bring. I'll be okay with less GB of memory for each tier, as long as the effective memory bandwidth is sufficient to not significantly bottleneck the performance of the GPUs.

It's a start, AMD haven't got anything really better a 2070 super. Even if it's close to the 3080ti for a much cheaper price, will be enough to force price changes from nvidia
