Start saving your Benjamins - Founder's Edition RTX 3000 cooler purportedly costs $150 just to make

D13H4RD

Toss this one in the "Really damn OOF if real but I'll try to keep expectations realistic" list.

The rumor mill for NVIDIA's RTX 3000 series has been quite interesting lately, with some cooler shrouds of what looks like Founder's Edition cards leaking earlier.

Igor's Lab (formerly Tom's Hardware Europe, which broke off after the "RTX Just Buy It" debacle) has reported that the shroud design is likely to be at least close to final.

Quote

I had recently posted various information about the new generation of graphics cards from NVIDIA and also processed them in the video, but I was still a little bit reluctant with regard to the currently leaked pictures of the RTX 3080 Founders Edition (FE). First I wanted to wait for confirmation whether and to what extent these are real pictures. As I have now learned from my own sources, NVIDIA has announced an internal investigation into the leak. The focus here is on Foxconn and BYD (Build Your Dreams) as contract manufacturers of the Founders Edition, where one suspects the source of the leak. So you can confirm the authenticity of the pictures.

A more interesting piece is how much it costs to manufacture, which is purportedly a whopping $150

Quote

As a small side note it should be mentioned that not even NVIDIA's product and sales manager should have seen these pictures before the leak. It remains to be seen whether Nvidia will still make various changes to punish the leak a little bit. The remaining 3 months are easily enough for mechanical changes, which is more difficult with the very complex PCB of the VU. Speaking of coolers - the industry is currently rumored to have a manufacturing price of a whopping 150 USD for the entire construction of the FE, i.e. the housing and cooler in one piece. This also suggests the positioning and pricing of the Founders Edition, which you would like to significantly upgrade again.

But I have more information for you that goes a little bit more than the picture leak. The somewhat more complex cooler design of the FE requires a special circuit board with an additional cutout. The internal designation is given with PG133 and the board should be used equally for all three versions on the launch day. The use of flexible power supply cables, which lead to the separate sockets at the end of the card, is also right here. The PCB and these cables alone will be a real challenge for manufacturers of GPU water blocks.

It is important to note that this is very much a rumor and there's still some lack of information such as the actual MSRP and how much the AIB cards that you and I will be more likely to purchase will cost.

With all that said, if all this is true, the FE RTX 3000 cards at least may cost a pretty series of Benjamins over MSRP.

My take

Spoiler

Still a ton of question marks over this before I can even comfortably come to a proper conclusion, but with the assumption that all this is true, wew, that ain't gonna come cheap.

From what is visible so far, I have to doubt that $150 figure. I don't see anything particularly challenging in the assembly. Is it different from what we typically see, sure. But it isn't that different. The additional complexity would add cost for sure, but it still seems excessive.

Note manufacturing costs are often listed as BOM costs, effectively material only. You add transformation cost to turn it into a thing. Lost of other stuff happens and it might appear on a shelf somewhere. Even if that $150 were attributed to the retail price, and not earlier stages, it seems like a lot. Doesn't add up.

Certainly not challenge but from the leaks it looks expensive

All the fins the aluminum (while cheap I guess the molding is expensive maybe )

Pretty much. There's still a lot of question marks in my head regarding how that $150 figure came up.

That said, we don't know what else is inside the shroud, so there definitely are still holes to be filled, that'll hopefully be the case as time goes on.

I'm just gonna stick with good old large stack of fins and a lot of large fans on it. FE cards are stupid overpriced anyway and I'd have to buy it from NVIDIA directly which is extra fiddling and extra customs expenses. This is electronic gadgetry, it'll be a paper weight in 10 years time.

Whats "too good" about that?

That is kind of how it always was... any new x60GPU was about last gen x70... and new x70 usually battled it out with old x80s.

Hell, if BigNavi is any good, NVidia might even have to make the jump even bigger.

But nothing unreasonable about those rumors. Id just call those rumors a solid guess by looking back at past generation leaps.

I would hope so, unless the 3060 costs significantly less than the 2060 it kinda needs to get at least a 30% performance increase at this point to compete with the successor of the 5700(XT), which would put it pretty much on par with the 2070 Super/2080.

350W and 320W for the first ones according to igor'sLAB.

The memory on the 3080 is pretty disappointing, only 10GB on a GPU that will probably cost the same as the 1080Ti costed with 11GB over 3 years ago looks pretty bad just like the 2080 did(assuming the 11GB one would be more expensive than the 2080 while the 10GB one would be around the same price). I hope they at least put 8GB at every GPU above $200, same for AMD.
