Tesla just held a livestream where they announced the new Model Y.

Here are some specs of the new car:

• 3.5 second 0-60
• 5 star safety rating
• .23 drag coefficient
• 300 mile range
• Very low center of mass
• Panoramic glass roof
• Seats up to 7 people
• 1.9 cubic meters of cargo area
• Starting price of $39,000

Here's an article from The Verge that elaborates on some of this: https://www.theverge.com/2019/3/14/18264446/tesla-model-y-suv-compact-announcement-price-release-date-features-elon-musk

Quote

Because the Model Y shares so much in common with the Model 3, it should theoretically be less of a drain on the company’s resources. It also represents a huge growth opportunity, as SUV sales are through the roof in the US.

Also, they did mention a couple of other interesting tidbits:

• Supercharger V3 - capable of 250+ kWh of output. Will be upgrading current units and adding on new units.
• They have currently produced over 550,000 vehicles (4 million tons of CO2 already saved)

Overall, I like the aesthetic and positioning of the Model Y. I think it is fantastic that they have come out with this as there is obviously a massive demand for SUVs, so being able to cater to that market with a reasonably priced product is quite compelling. I wish them the best with this and I hope that the ramp up goes much smoother than the Model 3 ramp which had many problems. I believe this is quite attainable though as it leverages many Model 3 technologies which have already had many of their kinks worked out.

Oh man, another cheap Ford Focus render!

Come Bloody Angel

Break off your chains

And look what I've found in the dirt.

Pale battered body

Seems she was struggling

Something is wrong with this world.

Fierce Bloody Angel

The blood is on your hands

Why did you come to this world?

Everybody turns to dust.

Everybody turns to dust.

The blood is on your hands.

The blood is on your hands!

Pyo.

SUV variant = more cargo space, seats up to 7 rather than 5, higher driver position on the road, etc. Also from a purely economical point of view, SO many people buys SUVs so it only makes sense to offer that as a product

So, a quick comparison against probably the closest existing competitor, the Hyundai Kona.

Hyundai Kona- $36450 MSRP, 258mi range, 201hp/291ftlb torque (0-60 in 6.4 sec via CarAndDriver) - 2wd FWD only, no awd

Tesla Model Y- $39000 MSRP, 230mi range, no ratings (0-60 in 5.9 sec via Tesla) - 2wd RWD, Not being manufactured until 2021

Tesla Model Y- $51000 MSRP, 280mi range,  - AWD, not being manufactured until late 2020

Performance version expected to be close to 400hp to hit 0-60 in 3.5 sec at $60k, but Tesla doesn't appear to have given any specifics.

Tesla Model Y (all)- 67 cubic ft of cargo space with rear seats down, seats 7 with options

Hyundai Kona- 45.8 cubic ft cargo space with all seats down, seats 5

Tesla also won't have any of the federal rebate incentives left for it at the time the Model Y hits, while Hyundai still has the full 7.5K tax credit for purchasing an EV from them, which makes the Hyundai a bit under 30k.  So, unless you have to have AWD, and another company like VW, Hyundai, Ford, etc don't come out with AWD in the segment…or you really need the crammed in 7th passengers or extra cargo space, the Tesla is a hard sell, since you wouldn't buy something like this to go cross country super charger to super charger anyway.

It's cool to see all of that cross-referenced. I do disagree though about it being a hard sell. A lot of people buy Tesla for the holistic experience. You get the performance and hard specs, but you also get all of the luxuries like the IMO sleek exterior as well as the IMO incredibly nice interior. You also get stuff like autopilot and hopefully at some point FSD. Furthermore, I think a fair bit of people DO rely on Superchargers for long distance travel, so thats a definitive plus for Tesla.

I'm very excited for there to be competition in this space, but I feel like sellers like Hyundai will lose out to the slightly more affluent customers as the Tesla just seems to be such a more advanced and luxurious car. Then again, it hasn't started being produced or sold yet, and there is still time for other companies to join in on the action, so I guess we'll just have to see how it plays out.

Well, for the more luxurious for the more affluent…it better not have Model 3 build quality, which it is based off of.  :(

I was really hoping the Model Y would at least make the AWD variant affordable, which they really could've done based on how EV motor costs have dramatically been dropping.  For reference, new retail pricing of a non-Tesla off the shelf 210hp/280ftlb electric vehicle motor is about $9k (as you'd expect a pair of in a performance model, or a single one of in the 2wd model), or 120hp/173ftlb for about $4k (as you'd expect a pair of in the AWD non-performance variant).  Prices pulled from EVWest who make electric car conversion kits for old/classic vehicles and sell supporting parts as well.

Hopefully they'll be able to escalate production a lot more quickly this time (which I am inclined to doubt, we'll see), but they are going to face a lot more competition by the time deliveries start as they're going to be up against much more mature German rivals ...
