I've been saying for along time that social media is a cancer that ruins the flow of real information.  Social media is just that, social, don't allow politics or business to use twitter or facebook and half your battle is won.

Freedom of speech doesn't exist on the internet, just like how you can't go into work at picket your colleagues on your right wing agenda you also can't go onto a website and post anything you feel like then expect not to be punished because freedom of speech.

 

It's a privately owned space and rules can and will be enforced. Besides which FoS only exists in the USA anyway, the rest of the world doesn't have anything in place even remotely similar.

Well i'm not surprised, i managed to create 3 accounts and each of them got banned in less than 1 minute even tho i didn't do anything on them and that was months ago, it was already too aggressive and they made it even worse...

The internet is the last place where you have have some kind of free speech,but you're quick to accuse me of being right wing. People get their twitter accounts deleted for nothing at all already.

By that logic all the mainstream media that also posts their biased articles to twitter shouldn't be allowed either,which I would agree with.

Twitter is it's own platform. They can do whatever they want with it. As much as a like freedom of speech I also like think it's important to note that freedom of speech only goes so far. I don't want somebody being able to tell me what I can and can't do with something I created. Just like that I don't think anyone has the right to tell Twitter what they can and can't do with their platform. If you don't like what they do with their platform don't use it. It's very simple. If you want a place to freely express your views go to other platforms that allow that or go and create a place to do that.

i must agree with you. And more than that people tend to be much more critical towards social media (even if i think social media is a cancer, that's besides the point). I keep listening how FOX news only serves one sided narratives, how is that any different from blocking russian propaganda?

The problem is society not the media vehicles.

That's true with basically all media sources -- they all push their own personal biases and agendas rather than being impartial, which almost always leads to one-sided stories.

Woah, just to be super clear, I'm not accusing anybody of anything, the right wing thing was merely an example, sorry for any confusion.

 

Internet free speech is a myth, the vast majority of websites have rules about what you can and cannot say while you are on those sites and in a lot of cases those rules are more strictly enforced than in the real world.

 

For example you could go stand on your street corner with a megaphone and shout about how great ISIS are as an organisation and nobody could stop you (assuming you weren't recruiting or glorifying terrorism which are separate offences) but go onto any website and create a post about how great ISIS are and you'll be doing well if your account is still live within the hour.

 

The point of free speech is to be able to voice your opinion without fear of repercussion, that doesn't exist on the internet.

Sorry,i read into your post wrong.  You can't do that in real life either unless you want to risk some kind of harm, the UK govt wants to crack down on said online terrorism,so the extremist sites are somewhere on the internet. But I agree, most news sites lean one way or the other,and you only have the freedom within their rules. The problem is twitter are calling people bots because they don't follow with the media companies twitter supports despite twitter being an "open" social platform. Though I think twitter should get away from politics entirely, twitter should be expected for memes & cat pics,not news.

Twitter wants to be part of that agenda,and sadly they can do whatever they want. I think twitter is a waste of time but at least they don't totally collect *everything* on you like Facebook. I just find it a bit ironic that people get upset when companies like Google,Youtube,Facebook delete,censor or violate law.  Twitter hasn't been making money despite being such a large social site,they'll still do whatever,and I don't even really use twitter so it doesn't bother me that much.

I'm surprised that it took this long for Twitter to do something about those "Russian wives available" bots. Hopefully they can stop distributing Vladimir Putin modeling photos (read as "adult").

What all these people losing their accounts over false accusations of being Russian (why is that even a thing to accused of? - that's McCarthyism, and is the same thing as racism), is that the numbers supposed Russia bots reported by Twitter are hyper-inflated.

 

I wonder if even 1/2 of the figure Twitter reported as being Russian bots were Russian or bots. And I personally would not be surprised if not even 1/4, or even much less of them were what they have been alleged by Twitter to be.

Most of the news that people in the West watch is either state-owned or funded. Most are just not aware of it, and have been brainwashed to treat "state-owned" and "state-funded" as buzzwords to get triggered by.

 

At least RT is staffed, produced, and hosted by US and UK personnel, whereas Canadian, British, US, European, state-sponsored news is typically prepared and delivered by the citizens of those countries, making those outlets far more biased.

 

If Washington Post were, instead of being staffed by US citizens, staffed by Russians, and the BBC staffed by Russians and not British citizens, then those outlets maybe would not be stuck in their self-confirming propaganda biases, and instead be more objective and similarly balanced to English RT, which is staffed by US and UK citizens, despite being Russia-owned. If you want to avoid state-owned and state-sponsored propaganda, then I recommend starting your boycott with those outlets (and CBC, France24, Euronews, Deutsche Well...), as they're far more biased in their staff composition, and in reporting quality.
