Folding is CUDA optimized. Has been for at least a couple of years now, whereas before AMD and Nvidia were a lot closer.

F@H can run simulations using either OpenGL or CUDA on GPUs and by default NVidia GPUs use CUDA as Nvidia has made the effort to optimize the CUDA cores used by F@H and the latest round of tweaking at the start of the Pandemic (Core22) yielded a 15-20% improvement over the the previous iterations.

 

You can force NVidia GPUs to use OpenGL if you really want to see a fairer comparison.

 

AMD, on the other hand, has a historically had trouble just keeping their graphics drivers stable let alone utilizing their scarcer programming resources to optimize the OpenGL cores.

 

I am not a Nvidia fan-boy. I use a FirePro in my Daily Driver. But after RDNA's lackluster performance on the 5700XTs I purchased those got relegated to the kids' 1080p gaming systems and I'm sticking with NVidia for F@H. It is, unfortunately, the best tool for the job.

 

Hopefully AMD will continue with the run of success they've had in the last few years and they will be able to delegate some resources to improving their performance in F@H.

Here's a little update about me personally and the folding team.

I bought a lot of two P106, one -100 and one -90 for $83 shipped. Supposedly they don't work, seller says they're untested but was told they're broken. I decided to take the risk on it since I don't see any obvious physical damage to them. If the 3GB card works I'll put it back to folding since it can't mine, if both work then one can pay for the other! If only the 6GB card works then...more mining, sorry. Mining is starting to slow down already though, I'm holding the same hashrate but my payouts have dropped from 1200-1500 satoshi every 4 hours to around 1000-1200 with more in the 1000-1100 range. With the stuff coming down in December I really suspect Eth mining on GPU's will become much much less attractive, I hope we can see a flood of used hardware then.

If you are folding full-time please remember to check your power cords, plugs and outlets every few months, say when you take your systems off-line to clean the dust filters.

 

I discovered this recently:

 

This was the outlet that feeds an 14/3 extension cord which, in turn, feeds the UPSes for 2 of my Folding systems and another UPS that Feeds my TrueNAS, ESXI Server and primary 24-port Gigabit switch. They, in turn, only draw about 1050W out of the 1800W capacity of the circuit. The damage you see here was caused by arcing due to a poor connection between the "hot" blade of the extension cord's plug and the receptacle. Fortunately I was warned of the issue by the Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) tripping.

 

This GFCI was in the ceiling of the un-finished portion of my basement and was installed in-line to retrofit an outlet into the Powder Room (Water Closet for you Brits) in the basement. It was installed about 20 years ago and replaced once about 15 years ago after damage due to a close lightning strike to the house.

 

The solution was to replace the combination outlet and switch in the Powder Room with a combination GFCI Outlet and Switch which are now available. The GFCI outlet that was in the ceiling was replaced with a "Commercial Grade" outlet which, unlike Standard Grade outlets, are actually designed to keep a tight grip on the plugs for many years and to not be replaced every 5-10 years.

 

While I was at it I also replaced the two duplex receptacles at the other end of the extension cord with Commercial Grade ones.

I didn't think that 'liking' that was appropriate lol. Yes, this goes for anyone with high power draw appliances that are plugged in for long periods of time. We had an issue like this with a window AC unit in the shop office this summer. Had to wiggle the cord sometimes to make it work someone told me and I was like uh nuh uh and found the socket and cord both melted!

 

 

 

So good news, the P106-100 is missing a SMD cap but may work once repaired. Working on getting  some advice for that since it's missing a solder pad on one side. Hopefully I'm more stubborn than the broken card. The 3GB card just doesn't do anything except spin fan, that will take some more sleuthing to figure out...

And this is why I like the UKs overbuilt sockets! With that said, I still check them twice a year

both my folders are on GFCI outlets as bathrooms are on same curcuit. and all my outlets are commercial grade  they easier to wire. and installed all of them when i moved in. 20a rated 15a curcuit...

WTH.  I don't fold with my 6900xt for the summer (makes it TOO hot in the upstairs Covid cave) and come back in preparation for folding month, to this?  What are ppl doing with their RX6000s to cause such a crappy average???  Gaming at the same time as folding??
