FIRST PERSON SHOOTERS CAUSE BRAIN DAMAGE ACCORDING TO NEW STUDY

So a new study has come out from the University of Montreal where they found a link between FPS and brain damage.

Quote

A new study in Canada from the University of Montreal believes it may have found a link between first person shooters and brain damage. The study was conducted on 100 participants who were asked to play 90 hours of first person shooters such as Killzone, Call of Duty, and Borderlands. After playing these games, studies showed a noticeably smaller level of grey matter in the brain as compared to someone who doesn’t play video games at all. Researchers claim that playing first person shooters will activate the “autopilot” portion of the brain, allowing the hippocampus to diminish in size which – over time – can lead to memory loss, depression, and schizophrenia. These participants were then asked to play 3Dpuzzle solving games that require more challenging thought and spatial awareness which resulted in an increase in grey matter, strengthening the hippocampus.

*Question Time*
1. Should people never have stopped playing Nintendo games since it says that platformers are good to play?

2. So a whole generation of brain damaged people are now walking around, should people be scared (of you)?

if you check the paper that article was based on it says

"The hippocampus is critical to healthy cognition, yet results in the current study show that action video game players have reduced grey matter within the hippocampus. A subsequent randomised longitudinal training experiment demonstrated that first-person shooting games reduce grey matter within the hippocampus in participants using non-spatial memory strategies. Conversely, participants who use hippocampus-dependent spatial strategies showed increased grey matter in the hippocampus after training. A control group that trained on 3D-platform games displayed growth in either the hippocampus or the functionally connected entorhinal cortex. A third study replicated the effect of action video game training on grey matter in the hippocampus. These results show that video games can be beneficial or detrimental to the hippocampal system depending on the navigation strategy that a person employs and the genre of the game. Molecular Psychiatry advance online publication, 8 August 2017; doi:10.1038/mp.2017.155"

essentially it all depends on how you play.....................

Doing anything for 90h in a short period of time will give you brain damage.

Also, that sample size is pathetic.

The only ones with brain damage are sensationalists who blame video games for everything because the world was totally perfect with no fault whatsoever before games existed /s

I think people should read the article (not the sensationalistic one) before jumping in to defend their hobby.

The study does not say video games (or FPS games) causes brain damage. It is a lot more complicated than that. Also, 100 people is not an insignificant sample group assuming the test was done correctly.

The study does not even say video games are bad.

I came to this thread for all the emotionally driven rebuttals based on little more than, this can't be true...

Unfortunately I wasn't disappointed.

Let's hope these 100 participants were random and not some specific people who already has brain damage/weak brain prior...

Conflating a reduction in Mass in one section of the brain and brain damage is clickbaity crap.

And as clearly stated in the paper:

Quote

At this point, it is unclear whether an increase or decrease in grey matter of the hippocampus of VGPs could have an impact on cognition associated with the hippocampus, such as spatial, relational and episodic memory
