i usually used i3s in build for my family members since non of stores every stocked them and most of the time some one asks me to build them a computer their old one is already dead so no time for online ordering

a lot of people . I used to recommend i3's in budget builds in the haswell and skylake days ( that or athlon's ) . Pentiums were cheap , but some games already couldn't run on them . However , the i5's were considerably more expensive .

even back then , i3's weren't particularly good value , but there was simply no alternative .

Had Intel done this a few months ago it would have made sense since R3 was still so far off....but at this point Intel is just so confident in their ability to market to (read: manipulate) consumers even with a better option existing.

as with gpus there's a celeron shortage so a lot of people are going up to pentiums and i3s since a lot of people dont have the patience in crypto mining to order online and most stores don't carry celerons in store either

You'd be surprised, there was pretty much no competition for it in the 100-150$ range.
