This thing is pretty crazy, my main desktop is an old 5960X, with a good overclock it'll push ~280W... Welp the 5700U laptop beats it in CB at 25W, and almost matches it at 15W 😄

 

130K at 23W, obviously at pointlessly dimishing returns, and the stock tune is pretty good at efficiency... although I might be limited by having set 12 threads

Attempting to fold on my Ryzen laptop (4800U) brought similar results, but I don't like leaving temps in the 90s for long periods of time.

I mean that and also the REEEEEEEEEEE of the fans entering takeoff mode.

 

Didn't look at power draw on mine the few time I did it though so I'm curious to see if it's similar.

 

It does annoy me and kind of confuse me how a 15-30W load can bring about temps like that, but then again I know that no matter how many cores you delegate, temps will be high on the CPU no matter what.

Well because the cooling is adapted to the power load, and those temps are what's targeted... In most cases if you got from a 60W CPU to a 15W one you'll take the opportunity to make the cooler 4x smaller since the temps are in spec anyway, there would be no benefit to having a chonky block of metal and massive fans just to keep a CPU at 40°C, especially in laptops, especially if "thin and light" is what sells...

Yeah makes sense when you mention target temp.

 

Just kind of expressing my annoyance at the fact that watercooling my desktop CPU didn't get me better folding temps lol. Though it did get me higher power draw and frequency so not worse at all.

 

Anyone know what kind of instruction set is run for CPU folding?

Agree, and also depends on the chonkiness of the heat pipes and fans. My Victus has a 75W 3050ti and a 45W 5800H, the thermal solution in the 3050ti keeps it at a chilly 65C load temp while the 5800H is whistling bouncing off TJ-max. If you just mirrored the GPU thermal solution onto the CPU, it would be a David among goliaths.

It's a nice idea, I had the same idea and tried for the last event, my merch messages popped up but unfortunately non were curated.

 

I think Gotspec has tried something similar in the past without much success.

 

Perhaps if we join forces and get a few messages going, maybe someone will notice them or we get lucky and one is curated?
