I've been zip tying spare Wraith Spire CPU cooler fans to my cards.

I was so lucky because EVGA just replaced the whole card for me at no cost and I sent it the day before I left for a two-week vacation and I had a friend pick it up for me like two days before I got back. It's very possible there is no better timing than that lol.

PPD can vary wildly with the WU, yesterday I was estimated at 450k/day and now it's around 285k/day because it just loaded up two huge projects that while worth a not insignificant number of points, are very long sims and renders.

The prism was a real cool one, and given the way that AMD massively asterisk-ed the AM4->AM5 compatibility, it's clip mounts make it the only stock cooler that can fit atm.

I guess that's one benefit to my ASUS 2080 having a noisy blower cooler, those fans being mostly used on server-grade hardware seem to be much more robust.

I'm honestly tempted to get a 4090 and drop its power limit to that of the 4080, it could very well still be faster in certain workloads especially after running the voltage curve optimiser.

In case anyone is interested, its looking promising using FAHClient for ARM64 Debian on Asahi Linux on Mac Mini.  I just extracted the deb file and ran FAHClient directly rather than bothering with installing it into the OS directories.

 

I can't remember the Mac OS numbers but so far its showing Estimated PPD on 4 cores at 113827 and falling, though pinch of salt given only 5% progress on the first WU.

It's an old Dell Compaq something something SFF PC.

I also fold with an old laptop which does like 6k PPD lol(i3-3217U dual core). It runs all the time since I use it as my storage "server" so figured I'd put it to use too.

Given that EVGA is out of the game and most designs will be a minimum of 3 slots I'll be giving the 4000-series a hard pass.

 

Seeing as they raised the power again, likely to achieve a measurable increase in frame rates, I suspect like the 3000-series there will be only a 10-15% increase in efficiency over the last generation.

 

Likely the same as the 3000-series, likely dropping the clocks to ~1500MHz will show peak efficiency.

 

I MIGHT have just ordered a B-stock EVGA RTX 3070 XC Ultra Gaming, a nice, 2-slot, 3 fan LHR card, to round out my arsenal.

No worries, 3 slots is definitely a little over the top

I think they knew the generation to generation increase would be limited so the focus was on DLSS 3 and RT improvements.  Given they are primarily gaming cards it makes sense.

If its true the new patch for Cyberpunk 2077 will add 100% pathtracing at actual playable frame rates, that would be insane.  The people who just moan that DLSS is "fake frames" really are missing the point, it doesn't matter if the experience is still good.  I think some people focus way too much on competitive gaming which is surely a niche market in reality?  This is technology that will make a huge difference to mainstream gamers.

Now I'm wondering if using my old laptop storage server would be worthwhile too, and I'm curious if F@H sees the Vega 10 moniker and gets confused like UB and thinks it's a VEGA 56/64. (Vega 10 is what the 56/64 family codename was)

If games adopt DLSS 3 then it kinda does.  This was always going to happen as they're hitting silicon limits and need to find alternative solutions to move forwards, with AI being the most promising and 100% RT being the eventual goal.  We can't get there if we just keep using up silicon for more rasterisation.

 

I think the older people who lived through the inception of 3D rendering on PC can see how this is necessary, whereas the people who didn't do not realise the growing pains we went through in the past that are necessary to progress the technology.  Just adding more rasterisation has been the norm for so long.

The vega igpus have their own name in drivers... not sure if they are whiltelisted for folding though

I think it worked on my 2500U with Vega 8 (I think) in Windows, but if I recall correctly none of the WUs would finish in time.

For anyone looking for a deal on a GPU to add to their fold in advance of the event I suggest you take a look at EVGA B-Stock Cards. The inexpensive 3080s are gone but some 2-slot 3070s are still there for $440US and free shipping in N. America. If you do the math and calculate the GFLOPs/$ or CUDA Cores/$ you'll see that the non Ti variants are the best bang for the buck.

 

Note that they tend to increase the prices on Monday, Likely to make them look more attractive for Discount Wednesdays.

 

I prefer the cheapest 2-slot cards. The FTWs are nice but have clearance issues when running multiple GPUs in systems. And if you care about efficiency and lower power bills youll be running them far below their max boost so that isn't as important as in gaming.

 

If you do order one of these (I've bought several) then be sure to do a close visual inspection and a good shake test. One of my 3080 had the screws and nuts that affixed the PCB to the Bracket come loose in shipping and both screws were wedged into the fins of the cooler and the nuts were rolling around. A dab of Loctite and things were good.
