fair, the 470 is an imperfect 480. the card I have from xfx is their top bin (didnt know this when I got it, just needed a reference blower design)

@Gorgon I feel like a dummy, how do I remote access, I feel like I've done everything right, set the allowed IP to access the remote, targeted the IP of the remote device, allowed it through windows firewall...

I used the right password to connect...

Can't think of anything else

Is the port forwarding configured correctly? That's what always seems to be the problem for me when anything remote access doesn't work and I can't figure out why.

I made the most simple of errors... forgot to restart the folding server lmfao

I'm thinking about auctioning off my signed 1080 after folding month, I need to raise some funds for the media company and it seems like something that could sell well... I dunno

Now were cooking:

image.png.16b97bd56c84116d186462ee01432893.png

Apparently the problem with my monitoring script hanging was something to do with how FAHClient rejects connections (or this case doesn't it seems, it just hangs) if you have the IP range wrong and I'd forgotten to change my IP range in one client (had to change it due a subnet clash recently).

If your power or clock-limiting the GPUs you can also get away with much smaller Power Supplies as well

I just worry about cards suddenly reverting to stock configs for whatever reason while continuing to fold, it's rare but I have seen it happen, I think it occurs when drivers crash and then are reinitialized.

A 650w or 750w would likely be running close to its limit with just 2 3070's at stock as they could to pulling 500 watts combined, so I prefer to use Psu's that could run my cards at stock even though I'm planning to underclock them.

Today I ordered some new parts in the hope I can get another system running 5 gpu's, this would mean I can run one system instead of 5, and hopefully saving 200w to 400w.

I bought another Gigabyte X570S UD motherboard, this is the same board I'm using in my current 5 gpu build, better the devil you know.

I bought 4 Tempest Riser Cables PCI-e x16 3.0 20cm at 40% off, hopefully they can do the job.

They look ok:

Tempest Riser Cable de Extensión PCI-e x16 3.0 20cm

From my experience I know bifurcation will only work properly on the Gigabyte X570S UD when it is paired with a gen 3 Ryzen, unfortunately I don't have any spare gen 3 cpu's hanging around.

I went to ebay and found 3100's being sold close to 100 euros secondhand, and the cheapest new gen 3 I found in my area was the 3600 for 130 euros, meh. I did notice that the 5500 was on a 35% discount down to 110 euros so I bought it, the plan being to replace my system with a 3500x with this cpu and use the 3500x for the 5 gpu build.

I bought this bifurcated riser, hopefully it works:

image.png.b7f57801311f71f6e8c21728bc59abc9.png

My plan is to mount the system on a spare mining rack I've got. Connect this bifurcated riser to the motherboard using a riser extension cable so it can be turned horizontally, and then use the new I riser extension cables plus a few I already have to connect the gpu's.

Hmm, I think I'm getting excited for folding month. I just picked up a cheap RX 580 8GB to add to my mix of random folding cards. It's an ex-mining card, but it's in good condition and I'll mostly be using it for folding.

Once that card arrives I'll have a total of 8 GPUs ready to go for folding month, including a GTX 1080, two RX 570s, one RX 580, a GTX 1660 Ti, a Quadro M4000, a Quadro P4000 and a Quadro P620. I don't plan on doing any CPU folding this time though.

Phobos: AMD Ryzen 7 2700, 16GB 3000MHz DDR4, ASRock B450 Steel Legend, 8GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070, 2GB Nvidia GeForce GT 1030, 1TB Samsung SSD 980, 450W Corsair CXM, Corsair Carbide 175R, Windows 10 Pro

Polaris: Intel Xeon E5-2697 v2, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASRock X79 Extreme6, 12GB Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080, 6GB Nvidia GeForce GTX 1660 Ti, 1TB Crucial MX500, 750W Corsair RM750, Antec SX635, Windows 10 Pro

Pluto: Intel Core i7-2600, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3, ASUS P8Z68-V, 4GB XFX AMD Radeon RX 570, 8GB ASUS AMD Radeon RX 570, 1TB Samsung 860 EVO, 3TB Seagate BarraCuda, 750W EVGA BQ, Fractal Design Focus G, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations

York (NAS): Intel Core i5-2400, 16GB 1600MHz DDR3, HP Compaq OEM, 240GB Kingston V300 (boot), 3x2TB Seagate BarraCuda, 320W HP PSU, HP Compaq 6200 Pro, TrueNAS CORE (12.0)

I'm considering dropping the CPU folding, it's been a rollercoaster of performance, some folds it chews through like a woodchuck, some folds are a sloth, and there doesn't seem to be a strong correlation other than "Cancer bad". If I could tell F@H to do only influenza and "unknown" folds on CPU, and "anything it wants" for GPU: I'd be set.

The only time I ever do CPU folding these days is on a couple machines that don't have dGPUs (or have dGPUs that aren't supported by F@h). It's been more than 5 years since I stopped doing CPU folding with a GPU in the same system. The performance suffers too much.

spun up the 6900XT last night to see how she goes. Right now i'm looking at around 5M PPD under windows, which is not too bad i guess. Does anyone here have a general F@H AMD guide for 6xxx cards? i feel like i could optimize even further but i really only run Nvidia under Linux usually.

should i just undervolt / overclock?

Question:

Do GRID Drivers affect F@H performance in a meaningful way?

Planning to spin up a VM on Gcloud this time, and it's an intriguing option.

"A high ideal missed by a little, is far better than low ideal that is achievable, yet far less effective"

If you think I'm wrong, correct me. If I've offended you in some way tell me what it is and how I can correct it. I want to learn, and along the way one can make mistakes; Being wrong helps you learn what's right.

afaik they don't even have tesla support, unless that changed

True, i have a Nvidia Grid K2 laying on my desk i used to run in my main F@H server. It is working on F@H, but it definitely is a bitch to setup.

If you look in the GPUs.txt here: https://apps.foldingathome.org/GPUs.txt

there are multiple grid cards in there.

I really want to join this year too, Will be my fourth year in a row, 5 if i count 2018 where I entered too late to get the badge, but participated anyway.

However I don't know if i can fulfill the requirements due to very high electricity costs in Europe this winter.
But I will see if I can get something up and running, and really hope to complete this event too.

Going to give it a go for the first time in many years. I did this on and off for team [H] about a decade ago it feels like but have been out of it since then.

5800x/RX6600

7900x/3090

I'm opening the windows and relying on PC's for heat, lets go!
