Canon Sued for Disabling Scanner When Printer Runs Out of Ink

FWIW, I keep an old, cheap, thin/portable USB powered flatbed scanner around. Being TWAIN compliant, I'm able to use any 3rd party scanner program.

 

Normally I keep it in storage, but there's moments where I need to dust it off and put it to use.

 

As for printers, anything less than laser is a giant waste of money. Cost per page sucks with ink; and if you use it very little, it dries out the day you need it the most. I recommend buying one 2nd hand as it could be a real good value if the previous owner didn't put too much of a duty cycle on it. Otherwise, the imaging unit and/or fuser roller assembly can be costly to replace.

Interesting. I may have to test this with our Canon Printer. The issue with our printer is it refused to say connected to our Wireless Network. So I ended up just hooking it up directly to my moms computer. If I need to print I have to transfer stuff to my phone and use my phone to print. Kinda sucks. 

 

It also seems like every time we need to print some shit, it needs ink. Next printer is going to be Laser. To mom that she will have to deal with no color because Im not buying a color laser printer.

Some time you need to do legal documents and such. Mainly we use ours for a scanner. But I know my dad recently needed to use the printer for Social Security documents as he retires in December. He refuses to learn how to use technology and Im sick of having to do every damn thing for him. My mom attest tries. Any way he need to fill out two forms and mail them in. Plus I dont think social security has caught up 100% with the 21st century. If it has, he didnt want to do it the "Easy" way. 

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I don't use a printer much, but when I need it, I just want the thing to work. So I went and picked up a laser printer.

I own an HP Ink Tank 419($200). It's pretty good TBH, I haven't had to get new ink in the 2.5 years of me having this printer. The black ink started running low(like 5 months back) but the box included an extra ink bottle so I just refilled the tank with that. Now I have half a bottle of black ink remaining. All other colors are at at least 80%. Though, the color cartridge seems to be having some problem and doesn't print Magenta. Will probably have to get a new cartridge, but this has been serving me pretty well. I think I've printed quite some pages with this one, so the CPP isn't too bad.

 

Anyways, I really hope Canon loses big time here.

A full set of replacement inks for it were something like £45. It was literally cheaper to throw the entire thing away and buy a new one than to buy 4 new ink cartridges.

Its been like that for awhile. Per weight printer ink is more valuable than gold

I don't remember my Canon printer doing that but it's possible that I fooled it because I play Age of Empires II as Incas.

At my office I've dealt with a lot of stupid printer hardware over the years, and I have gravitated toward Canon because their "DRM" in their ink cartridges seems less egregious than most.  especially HP. It is extremely annoying to have the entire multifunction stopped because we haven't received new ink from Amazon yet or whatever, because we're much more dependent on scanning marked-up documents than we are printing from that printer.

 

I hope Canon takes an L here and has to remove this problem from their multifunction machines.

Actually you would be surprised, for example besides legal documents, i also do a lot of CAD and drawings for customers. So the drawing must go trough an approval process with a signature and the last official version is kept in paper. When the customer is agreeing with a drawing or a change he has to sign the paper, that paper is scanned and saved and the physical paper is also kept. 

Second reason there are instances where you have a meeting in an area where you cant use a laptop so a paper form must be used, also work instructions on the machines (laminated paper), work turn over sheets etc etc etc.

Every day my employer uses about a forest worth of paper and that’s just one of the 14 warehouses. Every order has 2 copies of the packing list. Some times orders are changed multiple times, requiring a new print out each time.

This range from brother (they come in a4 too) have ink cartridges that do not contain electronics and are not attached to the print head. So when they run low you can refill them straight from bottles of ebay ink.  

 

EDIT: hang on I might have that wrong.  It has to use the LC40 and LC73 ink cartridges to be refillable.  but this is definitely the style of printer that takes them.

I have successfully refilled the brother printers that use cartridges LC3317 although they are a lot more fiddly than the LC40.   

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

Various places I've worked/volunteered/visited:

- 80's, All paper, few computers, printers directly attached to computers.

- 90's, All computers, printers in 1:10 ratio, usually with mechanical or auto-switches, network printers didn't exist until like 1996.

- 2000's, All computers, sometimes with 2 screens, printers in 1:50 ratio, no inter-office communication on paper

- 2010's, All computers, sometimes with 2 large screens, even at home. Rarely anything get's printed unless it needs to be signed

-2020's, everyone works from home now.

 

Honestly, there's been no reason to print anything since email became a thing in the 90's, but business processes often still required paper somewhere, like banks.
