Using .gz or gzip in Windows 11

Hello,

So while at work I come across some files in .gz format. One of the file was around 1.7 gb. When extracted, a .json file was produced of around 10 gb.

I want to know what method was used to compress such large file into small size and is it possible to do it in Windows 11.

Some google searches suggested using 7zip, and using it I compressed one of the .mp4 file but it was almost the same size.

Any suggestions?

You can't compare compression efficiency between wildly different file formats. That json file is only text, which isn't that hard to compress. The video file meanwhile is probably already compressed to a certain extent, so compressing it a second time won't yield a much smaller file size.

So I have a lot video recordings on my android phone, I cant backup all of em on google drive due to 15 gb storage limit. Any suggestions regarding this?

Either buy the additional storage space from Google with their subscription or buy a NAS and a bunch of high capacity hard drives to store that stuff at home, which could also double as a backup solution for your other devices. There's no free lunch here, you're not gonna find a magic bullet that saves you a bunch of storage space for video files. Never mind that if you compress everything, you will need to decompress it every time you want to access it, which takes time and processing power.
