Summary

Microsoft will be releasing Windows 11 on supported computers starting on October 5th, however, Android App support will not be enabled at launch.

Microsoft is announcing that Windows 11 will be released on October 5th. The new operating system will be available as a free upgrade for eligible Windows 10 PCs, or on new hardware that ships with Windows 11 pre-loaded.

The free upgrade to Windows 11 will start rolling out on October 5th, but like many Windows upgrades in the past, it will be available in phases. New eligible devices will be offered the upgrade first, and then Windows 11 will become available for more in-market devices in the weeks and months following October 5th.

My thoughts

It makes sense that Microsoft is going to want to get the OS out before Intel's new Alder Lake CPUs release. It sucks that Android app support won't be there until sometime next year.

That's not what I remembered, but I'm glad you liked it.  On just about every other platform it was awful; the OS's new features led to a failed phone and a PC and laptop experience that was inferior to Windows 7.  (Windows 10 was a rebound from a lot of this, to be fair.)

Windows 8 was great on tablet devices the surface really shined. 8.1 + a start menu was a pretty decent experience but overall 7 was better for desktop users. Windows phone 8 did pave the way to my favourite phone interface which was phone 10.

I still recommend people try 8 on a tablet many are surprised how just good and logical it feels to use as it uses all kinds of normal movements to navigate instead of the button layout. They really paved the way for swipe interfaces and I'm sad it has gone away in 10 and that 11 went the safe touch route.

I do wonder how much behind the scenes timing is being done between Intel and MS for Alder Lake. I think Intel would like to release this year, but they also really want Win11 to be available for it to get the best out of it. The date being little over a month away leaves almost a quarter for Intel to hold up their aim of launching Alder Lake this year.

Why?

IIRC the "We have Android support now!" was one of their big marketing points.

Is it not done yet or something?

Windows Insider people, are you able to use the Android support, and if so does it work?

Well for a while I defended Windows 11, not because I had any preconceived ideas about it, more that it wasn't done yet, and MS had plenty of time to improve things.

Well that time has passed and really, if you have a look at the first official dev build compared to now and not a lot has really changed. Yes bug fixes, but it was functionally locked back then and it's stripped away so many little things in the sake of 'progress', I'm not a fan.

Really glad that Direct Storage is coming to Windows 10 now because I'll be staying with it for a good while longer. Hopefully in the mean time, feature updates over the next couple of years will restore what they're taken away.

No Android support and the last few updates have brought only minor changes or improvements.

Oh boy I can't wait to be pestered constantly to update to Windows 11 and then have the installer tell me my hardware isn't eligible and quit, and then repeat that process for months.

It's like they want us to forget about the TPM nonsense or more likely they want people to go buy new computers.

Android app support seemed like the only feature worth giving win 11 a try, IMO.

I think i'll hold off on installing win 11, I didn't like the UI change, or MS forcing people into buying new PC's with TPM and no updates for unsupported systems.

um. no.

Windows 8 was "Fuck desktops get a surface RT instead"

I never liked 8 or 8.1 on a desktop, its was a joy on my surface RT, though

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

I jumped on all Windows versions as soon as possible. 8.1 was imo good. I even liked Windows Phone. But I find nothing interesting about 11.

The focus of Windows 11 is on the user experience, and not features.

Yet, people are calling the end of the world because their old system isn't compatible for it, and act as if on Oct 5h everyone on the planet will throw away their computers and buy a new one. Even its big features new Store, WSLg, and DirectStorage, are coming to Windows 10. Heck, DirectStorage isn't' even out for WIn11 yet, and we need games that will use it. Personally, I expect that by 2024-2025 Windows 11 will be worthwhile to upgrade. In the meantime, Windows 10 is supported until end of 2025. Most people would normally upgrade their system by then in any case.

Despite the fact that MS is collaborating with Amazon (which I don't like, but corps are just being corps), it's a shame they won't include it in their final release. Their 'showing off' of the feature was just another selling point, nothing more. Whether it's worth using remains to be seen in the insider versions if they'll release it to that branch anytime soon.

So it seems like Windows 11 will be exactly what I expected. Windows 10.1.

There is nothing interesting in Windows 11 from what I can tell.

Widgets that is just Microsoft shoving their services down users throats.

A new start menu design to push ads to users.

A new user interface design language that is just another layer on top of the already existing design languages that Microsoft have implemented. Still no consistency worth mentioning.

Updates to apps that should (and probably will) be released for Windows 10.

Unnecessary restrictions designed to push hardware sales.

Anything i am missing? What compelling reason do I have to want to upgrade?

I hesitate to call Windows 11 a downgrade from 10,but at best it's a side grade in my eyes.

Does anyone know what Panos was talking about when he was hyping Windows 11 as the fastest Windows yet? I haven't heard of any performance enhancements other than DirectStorage and the new IO ring buffer, but the former is coming to Windows 10 and the latter is very minor.
