They also do advertise as "it's still a PC" and added on the spec sheet that KDE Plasma will be the pre-installed desktop environment.

My guess, just like OG steam OS you'll be able to choose whether you want it to boot straight to steam big picture or act like a normal pc and take you to the desktop first.

And even if you boot straight to steam big picture, you'll still have the option to minimize it.

 

God damn I'm so excited for this little thing, always wanted a GPD and the likes, but they were to expensive to justify. 500€ for the 256gb model is a bargain :3

I suspect this was intended to go to Lenovo and some other OEMs who wanted AMD's codename Van gogh as mentioned previously by MLID. This looks like it is Van gogh so the only way Valve could have gotten this is Lenovo et al not being interested.

Exactly. In that period I think I've only played Crash on Steam. Opened Dota and Riftbreaker to check FSR.
Captain Toad/Mario Odyssey/Bowser's Fury on the Switch.
I would have spent my time playing WoW/Warcraft 3, if Blizzard wasn't such trash, but gave up on them completely.
Still waiting for the exclusivity period of a few games on Epic to expire. 
Still waiting for Tunic (basically Microsoft-funded Zelda, made by an indie studio).
Still waiting for Red Alert 2 remaster that should be coming this year or the next one. @__@

Have you ever heard of Steam sales? I never buy a game for the full $60. And there are so many other great games on PC that sell for $30 or even $15 or less.

 

I personally plan on reserving the 256 GB model as soon as reservations open tomorrow. For the type of games I play, this device will be great to get my PC library on the go. Most of the games that I play are older and/or indie titles that don't take up much space and will run fine on a Micro SD card. And for the few more intense AAA games I play, the 256 GB of onboard space should be plenty.

I'm absolutely buying one tomorrow if scalpers don't ruin it. I've been looking at handheld PC consoles for a while but the Chinese malware that kept showing up on them scared me away. Sure it's not crazy powerful but I bet I can just stream stuff from my PC to it and then when I'm on the road I can play games in a lower resolution.

So will this work with steam link, so your streaming your game from your main computer or is it stand alone? If it's stand alone i'd worry about it being able to run AAA games. Not sure if i'd get it yet, looking forward to some reviews on it.

The ergonomics of the controls look terrible. The placement of the d-pad and face buttons is really, really dumb and will be anything but comfortable.

 

All of that aside... Nobody should touch this with a 10 foot pole due to Valve's ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE history with hardware support. Every piece of hardware they release seemingly gets its development and support axed in a blink of an eye, leaving users with an unsupported paper weight. 

 

Steam controller, Steam Link box, Steam machines... the list goes on. All worthless products now because Valve doesn't want to support anything that isn't an overnight success. The only thing that has really stuck around is Index and even that's in doubt now with their supply issues.

I truly feel that the Steam Link is the BEST paperweight out of that lineup. Never got to try the Steam Machines, but the controllers currently are staged as the dust honeypot. This helps prevent extra dust entering my PC. 

 

Well said, Roswell. Agreed, except if it goes on sale. With a discount, I'd give it a try.

 

I like the built in gyro for aiming, seems like something I've been trying to do with the controller since the NES. Curious how it will actually play, though, as it could be pretty nauseating over time.

 

Th USB-C hub looks great too, and in fact any hub can work with it. This is definitely the right move for connectivity IMO.

 

Also mentions being able to play games on your home PC with Remote Play. Kinda wonder how well that's going to work considering bandwidth of a typical home ISP. Maybe I can co-locate my PC into a ISP closet? Hmm.

 

Overall, I think it's prudent and safe to be skeptical of the long term support as Roswell mentions...I am excited to see how it plays out and hope that it does well enough to see a version 2!

Considering the 720p res of the screen and modern video compression technology, bandwidth shouldn't be that big of a deal. I'd say that latency is a bigger issue.

I like it tbh, but it looks a bit bulky and I don't like the emmc storage. Really happy about the EAC stuff at least! !

I think this is really cool and will likely try and get the 256GB model. The screen only being 720p which is fine for it's size means it's life is actually going to be quite long, it should play AAA titles at 720p easily. The use of cloud saves makes it appealing as well, I can pick up from where I left off on my gaming PC.

It's not locked down so I can install and use Xbox Game Pass as well which is great. Using one of these would probably get me playing a lot of the indie titles I have that I can't be bothered to sit at my desk to play.

If the screen was 1080p I would absolutely have bought it for moonlight remote play. Guess I'll just keep using my phone and a controller

Regardless, being 1 for 4 isn't something to be happy about. You're basically accepting that there's a 25% chance that this thing will still be supported in a year or two according to Valve's previous behavior. Sounds great!

Latency isn’t that bad if you have a good router. I’ve played everything from league to sekiro through streaming and it’s hardly noticeable if you don’t jack up the bandwidth. I personally use moonlight, and as long as I keep the bandwidth below 100Mb/s it feels really responsive.
