Personally, the only model that makes sense is the highest end model, or mid-range one if you don't mind redownloading game or just having 1-2 games only installed.

Ignoring OS size which consume the drive space:

  • Gears Of War 4: ~110GB
  • CoD 4: ~ 100GB
  • Borderlands 3: ~110GB
  • Hitman 2: ~150 GB
  • RDR2: ~150GB
  • Battlefield 5: ~50GB

(The above is based on disk space for the games listed in the system requirements that I found online)

 

But you might not have to get the highest end model.  There are some m.2 2230 SSDs available on Amazon now.  Not saying that only one available model of the 512GB is ideal, but it is $199 and combined with the $399 model of SteamDeck, gives an option to get highest end storage minus all the extra stuff and save $50 which is not an insignificant amount.

Besides that, there are  a few 128GB models that range from $15 ~ $25, not everyone is going to play those ridiculously large file sized games, so maybe the base model + one of those 128GB drives  could work out great for many.   

 

All of this could be a moot point depending on just how difficult/easy it is to install a drive -

 

LOL and that upgradeable storage is  true to begin with 🙂

  • I agree with your point, that the deck won't defeat the switch. But that is valve's vision(beat switch with PC games).

This is currently posted on the Steam info page for the Steam Deck.  So the question of course is 'How not replaceable is 'not intended for end-user replacement'?  Are we talking 'Glued together like a modern iPad?' or more 'You'll need an ifixit guide, a spudger, and a nice screw driver'?  Cause this is relevant to another question: Battery replacement.  You can love and care for your Steam Deck all you want, the battery will run down.  In 2-4 years, depending on usage levels, users will want to replace their batteries.

 

Imagine if you could just drop in an 2230 M.2 SSD bought on Black Friday?  That'd be great.

I assume the system is installed on it, so you would have to clone the old drive before inserting the new one.
Or flashing a bootable USB then reinstalling the OS from it.

Yeah that'd not be a concern.  It's a just a PC.  I'd be shocked if Valve didn't offer an USB installer image.  Cause someone, some day, is gonna format their Steam Deck and then go 'Okay, how do I restore this?'  It'd be insane if Valve was like 'Tough luck!'

And remember, SteamOS?  You could just download that.  You never needed a 'Steam Machine'.  You could just download and install SteamOS on your own home built Steam Machine.

It's probably liability protection so they don't have everyone tearing into their steam decks breaking them.

Just keeping this here as a I hope so.  My laptop for example has a simple door with one screw to add more RAM.  That is user replicable.  Wanna replace the HDD or battery?  Now it's 9 screws and you have to remove the entire bottom plate off the machine and not snap it in half in the process.  Not user replacable.

So hopefully Valve just doesn't glue it together and this will be great.

Yeah I'm not too concerned considering people do repairs on iPhones, Apple Watches, and generally not user friendly electronics everyday just fine. I know ifixit will have a teardown guide as well

I sort of agree, but it depends on who is buying the thing. For enthusiasts? No problemo. For normies? It is trouble. I expected them to include the 64GB eMMC in all models as a recovery disk, but seems sort of wasteful.

I personally that if this had been released two years earlier, the whole market would be different today. This is way better value than any game streaming service, except maybe the Microsoft one since it comes bundled with the Xbox Live offers. Basically it's hard to recommend something like Stadia over this.

Bit disappointed about the storage options. Most AAA games require a decent amount of space. With that said, I wonder how microsd cards will handle games and whether if SteamOS will be actually optimized for it. I do hope Valve doesn't abandon this project anytime in the future and ensures there's LTS,  because like it or not, Valve likes to cancel shit whenever they want.

The APU looks quite impressive. While I’m not looking for a dedicated gaming device, I eagerly await to see what laptops pack these.   The low price points make me hopeful that I’ll find an inexpensive laptop with one of these APUs in it.

Wonder if it will ever be available in Australia. Went to the store pages and it said they are not taking preorders for my country. Given that it took 2 years for the index to come to Aus, I don't exactly have high hopes

Apparently these are being sold at a loss just like other consoles so doubt you will find a laptop at this price.

A slightly-better-GPD-handheld hyped like it’s the second coming by tech influencers (eager to generate some engagement in slow-news summer, as Austin Evans put it in a podcast speaking about the non-Pro Switch OLED “we have some skin in the game, we had wished we could make videos about an actually Pro Switch and not just a screen upgrade”) and booked 1 year in advance by people…go figure.

It's called market timing if everyone is salivating for a more powerful device and in their head they just know it will be made. Then when it doesn't their disappointed but another company says hey look we built something like what you wanted well everyone is going to jump on that. Even if the GPD was out for a while they are a unknown company, the price is not close to a switch, they have had reports of malware, and they didn't really time the market they just made it. All bad things for a product launch.
