Honestly this is a pretty nifty piece of tech.

I may get one, but I will be waiting for hands-on reviews.

The only real difference (for 300$) seems to be a fuckin' 512GB NVME which is a 75$ part (being generous), so I have a hard time swallowing a 400% markup for a tiny upgrade.

Thoughts: Valve just made a handheld console for the first time in their company history and it somehow has better specs than the switch lol, built in LAN and USB man

I am going to buy one at launch. This was the switch pro I've been waiting for. 4C/8T is a good CPU. 8 RDNA cores aren't bad. I love arch+kde. There is quite enough ram(they could've lowered it  to 10-12 and I would've been happy.

1. They are expensive and overpriced(399 for this thing is awesome!)
2. It is valve. A multibillion dollar corporation, not some kickstarter startup

If it has upgradeable storage I may consider buying one. Portable GTAO is enough to sell me on it. I am heavily interested on how that APU would perform tho. Kinda sucks its a 4 core but the 8 RNDA2 CU's are leaving me very curious

Bruh, its 399. What were you expecting? The pricing imo makes the entire thing a really good deal.

The only thing I'm worried about is that the steam deck vs switch doesn't become a gameboy vs gamegear

While i hope this thing does well (i just don't like handheld gaming), I'm actually more excited for the benefits it would add to linux gaming, I'm more excited this is based on an arch Linux install targeting AAA gaming, and the upgrades it may bring to proton, maybe even other software.

Oh shit!

JUST NOTICED THE TRACKPADS!!!

add age of empires and civ to the list of game I'll play on it.

Maybe even an mmo like guild wars

Those trackpads already opened up an entire world to me when couch gaming with the steam controller. Having them here just push it further

One day I will be able to play Monster Hunter Frontier in French/Italian/English on my PC, it's just a matter of time... 4 5 6 7 8 9 years later: It's finally coming!!!

The problem is that the CPU could have been a 6 core but that would sacrifice GPU space. RDNA CU's are physically larger than Vega II CU's. Thus a 4500/5500U is capable of packing 6 cores and 6 Vega CU's while this thing could only do 4 cores because of the 8 RDNA2 CU's. There is one chinese handheld with a 4500U at around the $399 price range but the IGPU on that is weaker since it relies on the 4500U's Vega 6. Also SD card's would get mauled alive by a game like GTA V and would be a terrible idea to use it for game storage.

I don't get the issue with with storage when you have access to a USB port...

Won't even bother with the microSD card

Aya neo doesn't have analogue trigger buttons. Apparently they're adding it on the next revision. Even with it, I guess the steam deck's 8 RDNA 2 CU GPU will easily outperform Neo's vega 6.

Onexplayer is much heavier, while having a 1600p screen which is likely to eat through battery.

GDP Win 3 is a solid option, but screen is much smaller

Steam deck looks like it picked all the right specs to be the ultimate mobile gaming system. The added touchpads should also help when playing games that requires fine cursor inputs. The incredible price also helps (NEO: $700, Onex: $1059, Win3: $999, Deck: $399)

16:10 means games will either be stretched or, have borders? Thats like a huge dealbreaker right there, as is the Euro prices…

Im not sure about the thumbstick position, but the whole thing looks balky and heavy… not very ergonomical, probably fine for people with big hands, everyone else will probably rather get a Switch.

idk but first impression is: underwhelming. The fact they dont say if you can upgrade the harddrive also doesnt fill me with confidence.

True, regardless of its bulkiness, this seems like a really good option  for travel, much better than a laptop…

Ha ha, calling BS.  Fake PC gamer detected.  Anyone says they pay more than 5bux for a game on Steam doesn't use Steam.

I know (hope) you arent full serious, but especially if youre in Europe Steam is indeed very expensive, and especially most japanese games for some reason, they often dont go under 30 euros even many years after release, wheras the playstation versions can be easily had for "15 bux" on disc, because  publishers cant controll those prices…

Unless you're implying "real pc gamers" only play cheap indie games for under 5 bux, then ok!  😅

It really is, why didnt Valve make this 16:9 when majority of games are made for that aspect ratio… my guess is: those screens are cheaper, because no one wants them.

Who is the target demographic?

If you don't own a computer yet, you should be saving for a real desktop (or laptop).

If you already own a computer, you can stream your steam games to a phone or tablet you probably already own. (and just get a controller attachment for it for like 50$)

For 399 (and realistically, with its 64gb of eMMC storage, no1 is gonna buy the base model, so the actual price is 529+) you can get a Xbox Series S + games, Nintendo Switch + games, or a PlayStation Digital.

It's terrible value. I suppose it's cheaper than its counterparts like the Aya Neo or the GPD, but still. It's so niche.

And if you want to emulate old consoles, get a PS Vita. Small, OLED screen, good battery and you can get them for under a 100$.

Hopefully reviewers give pads+gyro aim a shot. The Steam Controller got a lot of mixed reviews for being "weird" when it released but it has a cult following (myself included) for its unique (and honestly unmatched) configurability and featureset. r/SteamController and channels like Critical Input, Mennenth, and RambleTam put out some great content on how to get the most out of the SC.

The LTT review of the SC was a bit of a letdown in my opinion; so I'm hoping the Deck succeeds and brings touchpad aim (and Linux gaming!) to the masses, even if the pads are a bit compromised on the Deck compared to the SC.

Maybe the 64gb of eMMC could be used if you install your games to a usb-c drive instead of MicroSD. Then you'd have faster speeds. I'm having trouble deciding if I want to preorder and if I would want the 64 or 256gb. $129 is way too hefty of a price bump for just the storage increase IMO. I might order the base model and cancel if the reviews show it's not as performant as I'd like. Very interesting product though! Hopefully it doesn't die after a couple years like many other Steam projects often do.

Yeah it's a tad expensive, but if performance is up to snuff I can swallow it. On the shop page it shows a menu bar at the bottom, maybe that's why they went with 16:10. I don't really care about it.

The sticks have always been a problem with these things. They're not in a terrible position, but the Wii U, Switch, this thing most likely all just feel "off". I still prefer a proper controller (please bring back the Gamecube one Nintendo, best one ever).
