Tesla suspends purchases using Bitcoin citing energy concerns

Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced via Twitter that the company would be suspending vehicle purchases paid for with Bitcoin. Energy consumption and production is cited as the main reason for this move.

My thoughts

Musk says the company is looking at other cryptocurrencies that use a small percentage of the energy that Bitcoin does. I find this move somewhat interesting. We've recently seen the rise in Chia (XCH) farming, and the resources currently needed for it are much less than Bitcoin. I don't know that Chia would be the best option for Tesla, but hopefully we can get some more information soon.

Cryptocoin as unregulated stock.  That’s an interesting take.  Stocks didn’t used to be regulated.  It caused several major depressions the most famous being the Great Depression. If there’s commonality, and there seems to be, Means small players are going to get screwed because the stuff is effectively controlled by whoever is equivalent to J.P Morgan right now.

Let's be honest here and not make it out like bitcoin dropping 15% is irregular. Bitcoin has been nothing but volatile since its existence so this drop isn't very surprising. Sure it might be due to the tweet but it could also be due to so many other reasons. Maybe a ton of people decided to sell all at once because they thought it was at a high or many other various reasons.

This. It's neither irregular nor a big deal, but the dips don't happen wholly without reason. Playing the devils advocate it might even be the play. Tesla stops accepting BTC > people lose faith and sell > price drops > Tesla/people buy the dip.

I think it would be HILARIOUS for an act similar to the UASF to come around and lock the accounts holding Tesla's 1.5 billion in BTC. As in, they cannot send or receive on those addresses, the mempool rejects transactions to/from them. It would be a bit untractable as a problem though, because he'd be able to move the bitcoin in a few hours prior to the UASF reaching consensus levels (if not sooner) and then we'd be blacklisting the wrong addresses.

 

IDK, I flip flop back and forth between "We have the tools to punish this asshole" and "his effects on the market are so small it's really not worth worrying about." *shrug*

There seems to be a theme of ignoring time in this.  Tesla stopped making batteries with cobalt even though they worked better because of the problems you described.  Past tense. As for the renewable energy thing, Yeah ignoring it is probably best since it isn’t true.  Might be int the future, but not yet.  Got to look at where a lot of Bitcoin mining is done, namely Mongolia.  One of the coal lands.  There are places on earth where renewables are majority sources.  That’s not where most mining is done though.  World wide I remember seeing 15% which was up quite a lot from 5%.  In the future? Maybe.  Right now? No.
 

the video is entertaining.  Guy starts by making a bunch of quotes none of which I had ever heard, attributes them to people famous for saying not those things but other things and then makes a “disclaimer” which while also pertinent is not the bias disclaimer.  The pertinent one is that it’s an advertisement .  He’s not acting as an “educator” he’s acting as a salesman.  They run a fricking opening cut to that effect.  Look at his t-shirt.  THAT would be a disclaimer worth making. He goes on to  refute a bunch of non pertinent points in an attempt to disqualify the entire concept of statistics.  Can statistics be messed with? Sure. Quite badly.  That’s the actual meaning of the quote he makes at the beginning, not the one he attempts to impress.  All models are by definition wrong but some of them are useful.  They need to be checked, and their use needs to be limited to what they are good for.  Push them too far and breakage is expected.  That is not news.  It wasn’t news in the 19th century.  It’s a mix of just enough truth to make the falsehoods palatable. Are the quotes he make in the beginning exaggerations?  Sure.  He’s the only one paying attention to them though.

See this is a bad argument.

 

Let's break down why.

 

1. "Charging an EV with coal" - yes, this is undesirable. But it's also still less bad then using Gasoline in a regular ICE powered vehicle. This is due to efficiencies of scales. A Coal powered power station emits less pollutants (especially CO2) per km driven when used to charge up an EV, than an ICE powered vehicle driving the same distance.

 

2. Coal can be replaced. If you already own an EV, and your power comes from coal, if your government/power company upgrades their infrastructure to include different (cleaner) power generation sources, your EV gets an automatic instant boost to it's carbon footprint and emissions.

 

3. Not everywhere uses Coal to generate power. Ontario, for example, uses primarily Nuclear and Hydro-electric to generate the vast majority of it's electricity. The rest of the power is a mishmash of renewables (solar and wind - and I guess Hydro power counts too), biofuels (wood pellets, etc), and Natural Gas is used for load balancing and short term spikes. Ontario uses zero Coal for power generation. All of these sources pollute less than Coal and produce less CO2 emissions (which is still better than ICE powered gasoline engines).

While it's true that EV Battery manufacturing has it's own ecological concerns, you're highly oversimplying the issue. For starters, Tesla has actually started to transition to cobalt free EV batteries. Tesla Model 3's manufactured from their China factory have batteries that do not contain Cobalt.

 

Furthermore, the amount of cobalt needed (for those still using it), are vastly reduced due to innovation and progression of the technology. Early generation modern EV's (think 1st gen Nissan Leaf and the original Tesla Roadster) needed batteries that contained 30-40% of Cobalt. This slowly changed to the industry having EV batteries that contain around 15-20% Cobalt. Tesla's non-cobalt free batteries only contain about 5% cobalt - and sooner or later, these will be fully replaced by the Cobalt-free batteries.

 

Cryptocurrency does have a problem with electricity though - especially since many cryptocurrencies have built-in difficulty mechanisms that literally make it need more electricity to "mine" new coins simply because more people try to mine them (it's a forever circular problem as people chase the profits, but the profits are finite).

 

If new cryptocurrencies are designed to be as energy efficient as possible? That's fucking sweet. I'm not particularly up to speed on all the new crypto developments, but I'd be curious to see how a cryptocurrency balances the need to maintain a steady artificial flow of "newly mined" coins, vs encouraging the minimum amount of electricity needed.
