If you don't enable tracking in iOS you are not doing your part to keep Facebook and Instagram "free".

My thoughts

I don't use these platforms but to me it is all about them squeezing out as much money as possible from their users, they don't care about anything else. Hopefully this contributes to the end of these platforms, would want nothing else.

And they still have big money in selling irrelevant ads, I still dont get why they need to be fully invasive in tuning relevancy for the user.

If anything this just validates that Apple is indeed doing a lot for your privacy that can beat Facebooks sly fingers.

I don't have an iPhone, or an Instagram or Facebook account. When you are prompted with that screen do you have to agree to tracking to continue and use the app or is there an option to not enable tracking and continue using Facebook/Instagram?

I mean it's been obvious from the beginning that you the user is the product. Nothing is free in this world so if people want to sell their data to the silicone valley devil go ahead. without users data they will probably have to charge for Facebook.

Of course you can block tracking and continue using the app.

 

There's also a global settings which removes all pop-ups and blocks tracking by default.

After nearly 10 years of Android I dropped them for IOS.  Apple's privacy practice, although not stellar, is still better than Google.

Then of course there is Google's janky OS.

Terribly optimized phones and relatively short support cycle.

 

As far as Facebook, I dumped them last year and never been better.

Facebook will never go Pay to Use, they know full well nobody will use their services if it wasn't free.
This truly is just scare tactic to make people who are addicted to these services give away their info.

I'm almost certain this violates the app store TOS. You're not allowed to incentivize enabling of tracking, and I'm pretty sure a thinly veiled threat to charge for Facebook/Instagram qualifies as incentivization.

I got my FB account for free, I can close it for free. I will never pay for social media. They should be paying us to use it, not the other way around.

Literately this morning, I had fb notifications from family asking how facebook knows when they are shopping for things, and some of their friends going "lol, should have bought an iphone"

 

Here's the thing, the end of privacy is here. Between data leaks and the willingness to harvest your data for profit, one should make conscious decisions to put a wedge between their personal lives and everything they do online. Use two separate devices, or separate browsers, or just invent an entirely new identity for the stuff you do online to minimize damage to your personal life should things leak or get mis-attributed to you because you happen to share names with family members or distant relatives, or even strangers.

 

One of the worst consequences for doing genetic tests and family tree research is realizing how frequently traditional naming practices will come back and burn you. Were you named after your grandparents, and their grandparents, chances you share a name with someone 4 generations removed who also was named after the same grandparents.

 

Honestly, even the fact people put babies on their facebook profiles, or even create profiles for them, is probably permanently going to ruin their lives 20 years from now.

You make some great points that I think are pretty safe to agree with. I would add on top of that since Google and Facebook have a significant revenue streams from data collection Apple can now market and "sell" something Facebook and Google can't.

Personalized ads and telemetry of user habits are cancer to privacy,

You can still earn money from advertising without the use of personalized ads,just don't "personalize" them,

Instead of displaying personalized ads you can display ads that are related to the topic of the web page you are visiting.

As for telemetry of user habits,you can rely on user feedback just like in the old days.

Some websites no longer works on Firefox and when I use Chrome, it suddenly works. Well, fuck that. Next time if there are more websites not working on Firefox, then so be it, I won't visit them again. I’ve got an iPhone with 14.5 but I’ve never seen the request because I’ve always had all that turned off globally (which was an option) getting access to that option was why I switched from android to iPhone in the first place.  I had to give up some software I really liked to do it.   Perhaps I could turn it on now.  I seem to survive without it though.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.
