Linus/LTT have 80 RTX 3080s now for some reason?

IAMABOSS

So a few hours ago, LTT twitter posted this image,

 EvrmMagUUAEE2zF?format=jpg&name=large

So what are is his plans for these GPUs? I count 10 boxes, and the quantity number is super blurry, it could be 6 or 8, so 60 or 80 GPUs!

What do you all think? Giveaway, sell them on lttstore.com? Or something else.

He did once mention on WAN show working with someone on a big deal, purchasing something.

From what I remember, he talked about that while discussing the trade tax into USA, when I think he mentioned talking to someone how much it would cost to import graphics card into Canada and then export to the US. Maybe that is related.

Well, at the very least form members may be less likely to resell them, generally more respectful, and have been trying to help the community. All signs of good people who would keep the 3080.

I do not mind if people mine on the GPU at all, as long as they do not get it and immediately resell it for 2k+ on ebay. I really hate scalpers.

Could be very simple ....  have anyone interested grab a phone and make a short recording in front of their pc and show the hardware info ,....

if restricted to ltt forum users ... they could restrict to accounts older than 3-6 months, and compare the specs in the video with specs filled in the profile (which could be retrieved from backups if needed, so people won't edit their current profile)

Though it's still iffy ... we may find people selling their forum accounts or applying just to sell card on ebay.

Stuff like this is what I would say do, I mean it's only 80 GPUs, they could just have an ltt employee review all the purchases.

I think I would appreciate one, my Vega56 is getting long in tooth but a 3080 is probably way overkill for me. Just a 3070 would probably be fine or even a 3060ti. I think what I'll really need is whatever lower end below the 3060 they release for my HTPC, the GTX 960 in there isn't so great anymore at hardware accelerating anything.

Not going to lie though, I would have to mine with it to recoup my purchase cost. Work has been very slow.

No, as Linus said on WAN show "if you're a gamer and managed to get one you'd be stupid not to mine with it when not gaming", the gripe is about mining farms.

I really think it is mining farms driving the prices up so much more, a few weeks after launch 3080s were going for around 1k/1.2k USD on the local used market, crazy for a 700$ MSRP product, now they are 2k+ on ebay and ghosts on the local market. Mining farms have a ton of cash to throw around so they keep buying them up, so prices continue to rise. I am really starting to dislike this "convert electricity into money" garbage. I understand that it totally makes sense to mine right now, but my electric is expensive enough, and I cannot get a 30XX anything to mine on.

Well they could make a video out of selling these at MSRP.   Verifying each person via a Zoom conference or similar.

They could also sell them only in person to people in Vancouver who are known to them.

They could also be sold at MSRP to employees.  So that every employee can have a computer they built, and own, and which makes some GD sense*.  Plus if they use it for anything work related it would be like the card is ultimately paying for itself.   Like an investment in their company.

*The GPU market is hollow right now.  There are GPU's to buy at the very high and very low end ... just nothing in the larger middle.  Nothing less than a Quadro but more than a GT 1030.

I'd love to be able to be one of the lucky ones upgrading, been trying since launch day but just can't compete. Either way, this goes a long way to really ensure people who will use these for the advertised purposes can actually get a cool chance to get em.
