[UPDATE] Windows 10 October Update Potentially Deleting Files and a Warning for Intel Users

Windows 10 1809 is here, and unfortunately, it's here with a very major bug and a minor one affecting those using Intel audio drivers.

Microsoft this week kicked off the Windows 10 1809 rollout, and now some users have found the update is wiping important files, including photos and music, reports MSPoweruser.

Several early adopters of the Windows 10 1809 update have reported vanishing file problems on Reddit, Twitter and Microsoft's Community forum.

One poor Windows 10 1809 user, Robert Ziko, claims to have lost 220GB of dataafter updating.

"I have just updated my windows using the October update (10, version 1809). It deleted all my files of 23 years in amount of 220GB. This is unbelievable, I have been using Microsoft products since 1995 and nothing like that ever happened to me," he wrote on Microsoft's user forum.

"Files were located at C:/Users/rober/Documents/. This location is still present, with no files. All files deleted."
 

 

 

Basically, some users have reported that updating to Windows 10 1809 has wiped their files in the Documents folder. For one reason or another, this only affects the Documents and Pictures folders if they are saved locally and not on OneDrive.

On an unrelated note, Intel and Microsoft has issued a warning for those using a Skylake CPU or newer about audio drivers.

Intel has a fix available in the form of driver 10.25.0.10, which is bundled in the Intel Graphics Driver version 24.20.100.6286 and newer.

Intel said it "strongly recommends" users with its 6th Generation Skylake CPUs or newer processors to confirm they have the updated version before installing Windows 10 1809.

Well, the October update is here, and as a fair warning to everyone, make sure that you've backed up all of your shit before you proceed. It's a little sad to see both Microsoft and Apple falter in major ways with the newest updates to their OSes. What are your guys' thoughts on this?

 

UPDATE ON WINDOWS 10 1809 AVAILABILITY:

It seems like Microsoft may have pulled Windows 10 1809 from being downloaded, at least from Windows Update. Please check for your setup, but it was not available for me.

On topic, I updated today, no issues but all my data is on other drives anyway. I keep nothing important on my OS SSD.

Fortunately, most of the files in my Documents are just game-related or old school papers, and everything in my Pictures folder are just screenshots.

 

Regardless, I'll check when I get home. Are the files deleted during the update process, or are they deleted at seemingly random times?

 

Edit: Just got home and checked the My Documents and My Pictures folders. All my files appear to be intact.

I just don't understand why people do not create backups of their files... I have 3 backups of all my PCs, one on external drive, on my owncloud here at my home, and another one on the cloud..

Guess it's time to backup and hold off on updates until they clear it up. Should only take a day or two, probs

Not everyone needs backups first of all and second most dont know better. If any of my grandparents drives dies they just expect to fix it, the concept of it being lost forever isnt a thing.

I remember a time with OSs where security updates were sent and you didn't have to worry about the OS breaking every other month.

You would need to be able to afford 3X the storage so your 3TB drive turns into a 9TB.

Well, Microsoft does say that Windows 10 Home and Pro are merely beta (pilot) versions of Windows, used to test new Windows features to get them ready for widespread deployment.

not everyone can afford 3 hard drives or multiple cloud services to back your stuff up. And is this how you will defend microsoft? This should not be a problem, there is no "well doesn't everyone have 99999 petabytes of storage to back up their stuff onto a million different services or external drives"

The document deletion thing doesn't really concern me since I barely have 100GB of storage used where about half of that is games and the other half is OS and drivers files. Everything I store is on Google Drive or off-site on my USB stick anyway.

 

That Intel driver thing though, why does the tech world give me so much remorse over buying an Intel Coffee Lake CPU over a Ryzen?

I would like to wait for more information,

I have a feeling that user data isn't delete but rather a temp account has been created instead, and the files are still under: C:\Users\<original, normal, account name>\. I don't see why user files would be deleted as a result of an upgrade.

 

I am not saying that the creation of the temp account is normal either. It should not happen. All I am saying is that: I am curious.

good thing im that one guy who never has any problem with windows 10 regardless of how bad its supposed to be.
