According to hexus.net GPU-Z V 2.12.0 Now Detects Fake Nvidia GPUS.

 

If A Fake GPU Is Detected GPU-Z Will Brand It As A Fake And Where The Logo Would Appear Put A Big Warning Triangle. (Shown In Image In Quote)

 

The Update Is Also Including Stability Updates And The Ability To Extract And Update The BIOS Files Of The RTX 2080 Series.

Hmm, so one could knowingly buy a fake card from ebay, use that screenshot as proof it's fake, get a full refund and able to keep a gt450 or whatever chip they use card.

I'd assume it checks the reported name with the GPU chip actually present. If they don't match, it's a fake. There would have to be enough public information on unreleased cards for them to add that.

This is nice but isn't it to late if it reports your GPU fake that you already paid for?

 

I doubt the seller would be reputable if they are selling fake GPUs.

A typical scammer won't able to pull this off. The program reads from the gpu/bios, so it's not just a simple sticker swap. Also the coolers are different, for each gen, and that can be a give away too. 

E.g. 8800gtx cooler on a gtx1080

 

The scammer must first rewrite the bios and then reflash it For 1 card it's a waste of time. So it must be done, by those who does this with mass production or something.

eBay is way easier to scam than that.  Request a return, send them back a rock in a box, ebay will automatically give you a refund just based on the tracking of the rock-box showing delivered.  It's basically an honor system that works most of the time but has very little fail-safes when people want to shit on it.  You can get burned really bad selling phones and other > $200 stuff.

Interesting.  I'm sure most people here have the means to test things on their own, and/or avoid buying fake cards in the first place, but hopefully this will help those who do not have those skills know when they should be requesting a refund.

 

Then again, do those people even know what GPU-Z is or how to use it?  Hm...

It's good that they're doing this, but unfortunately by the time you can testy it you've already been scammed. It's also likely that the majority of people who are going to fall victim to the scam aren't going to know what gpuz is.

 

eBay needs to work harder to remove the listings. They also need to improve their report system so users can easily flag a product listing as a scam.

Fake cards are not a new thing and it's common for people to request a refund after they realize what it is.  Sometimes they don't even make you send back the card so you get the money and the card.

So the question then becomes, if you bought a card on Ebay because you need to save money, do you really want to risk finding out it isn't genuine and deal with the all the coffufle of returning a product  or continue gaming in the bliss of ignorance?
