AMD Says you have to use stock coolers to keep your warranty.

So a video from UFD Tech has appeared. Stating that you have to use a AMD Cooler to keep your warranty. But how can they tell that you used a different cooler? I think this is Anti-Consumer.

This is odd how deep it is in AMD site. I don't know if its real.

I think Anti-Consumer is a more accurate term. But like he states, there's pretty much no way for them to enforce it.

Still, dick move AMD.

He said it right there in video... AMD cant prove it therefor they do not really care. Its there...probably legacy and not important. Look at how many people RMAd for segfault...AMD didnt care what cooler was used.

 

 

*The only case I see that they would care is if you tried using a $5 30W cooler on the 1800x overclocked it fully killed the cpu and then go try and RMA it.

Are you really going to need a cpu warranty? You have to be too careless to kill a cpu or have a really tragic accident with water.

This does seem odd, I wonder when this was added to the warranty terms and if there is any similar writing in the Intels warranty for comparison, as I wonder if this might be standard boilerplate to protect them from warranty abuse.

This is really deep in AMD's site, and AFAIK this is for their processors that come with a heatsink pre-mounted, which were last sold in 2009.

no way that AMD actually will void your warranty for using a 3rd party cooler. Still something that shouldn't be on their website in such a broad context.

Anti-competitive has a meaning, this isn't it.

 

At most, this is anti-consumer. I think Intel does this as well though, so it's not particularly abnormal. The fun part though is that the only way they can prove you violated the terms of your warranty is by you telling them. I'm not advocating for dishonesty, but it seems justified since some CPUs don't come with stock coolers anyways.

Solution:

Cut a hole in the box so that the pins can connect, but make sure it stays in the box it came in. that way you can use the original AMDTM air.

Warranties need to be offered on pretty much any device as it basically guarantees that the product will last that long, or the company will replace it at no charge, provided it wasn't caused directly by the user or something else(like a surge). With indivdual solid state components, things going bad is rare.  But I agree they need to have a warranty.

I was gonna say, I don't think this is new.

 

I'm fairly sure this has been in the terms and conditions of AMD CPU warranties for years (probably decades).

 

AMD isn't heavy handed about the policy, nor could they police/enforce it anyway, so I'm not surprised that many people are unaware of it.

I'd imagine they don't really care if you used a different CPU cooler, they just include this language for extreme edge cases - like if someone uses a stupidly terrible/cheap cooler that causes the CPU to burn out.
