AMD confirms Q1 2018 release for next-generation Ryzen 2000 series processors

So this caught my ear.

 

TechPowerUp has confirmation that AMD has scheduled this release for Q1 2018 (article is two paragraphs long, so I'll post the article in the quote):

It also clarified that "2nd Generation" does not equal "Zen2" (a micro-architecture that succeeds "Zen"). 2nd Generation Ryzen processors are based on two silicons, the 12 nm "Pinnacle Ridge," which is a GPU-devoid silicon with up to eight CPU cores; and "Raven Ridge," which is an APU combining up to 4 CPU cores with an iGPU based on the "Vega" graphics architecture. The core CPU micro-architecture is still "Zen." The "Pinnacle Ridge" silicon takes advantage of the optical shrink to 12 nm to increase clock speeds, with minimal impact on power-draw.

 

AMD is also launching a new generation of chipset, under the AMD 400-series. There's not much known about these chipsets. Hopefully they feature PCIe gen 3.0 general purpose lanes. The second-generation Ryzen processors and APUs will carry the 2000-series model numbering, with clear differentiation between chips with iGPU and those without. Both product lines will work on socket AM4 motherboards, including existing ones based on AMD 300-series chipset (requiring a BIOS update). AMD is reserving "Zen2," the IPC-increasing successor of "Zen" for 2019. The "Mattise" silicon will drive the multi-core CPU product-line, while the "Picasso" silicon will drive the APU line. Both these chips will run on existing AM4 motherboards, as AMD plans to keep AM4 as its mainstream-desktop socket till 2020.

 

All the CPUs are branded as the Ryzen 2000 series (runs on a new architecture codenamed Zen+), this new lineup is slated for a Q1 2018 (January/February/March) release, according to Gamers Nexus in the video which starts at 3:45. No article format of the video can be found at the time of posting, so I'll update it whenever they get around to posting it. This is to be manufactured on GlobalFoundries 12nm LP (which they call Leading Performance), and features improved clock speeds, RAM overclocking, and improved power efficiency. This new iteration of the Zen architecture will run on the new 400 series chipsets, and are backwards compatible with the 300 series chipsets (requires a BIOS update before installing the new CPUs), and it will reuse the AM4 socket. The Zen+ architecture will be split into two codenames: Pinnacle Ridge for the CPUs, and the anticipated Raven Ridge for the APUs. No one is sure whether this will be called Ryzen 2, or it'll be simply referred to as 2nd-gen Ryzen.

 

Gamers Nexus has since posted the article format of the same video. All the information is basically what you'd find in the video, but I'll include the Ryzen news:

In an article form from WCCFTech, there's some additional information which I'll quote the good parts below.

The good news is that AM4 compatibility is remaining. Theoretically speaking this means that all it will take to turn any of the existing 300 series motherboards compatible with a 2000 Series Ryzen CPU is a BIOS update...

This is the slide posted in the WCCFTech article. I can't vouch for its authenticity or validity, as its only rumor.

We've known that AMD's updated 'Pinnacle Ridge' CPUs would land at some point in early 2018, succeeding the original Ryzen 'Summit Ridge' range, but what's new with the new Zen+ CPUs? They'll use a 12nm manufacturing process, which should allow for higher frequencies - perhaps a key area that AMD, despite its successes in 2017, was behind Intel, especially when overclocking was concerned and could also mean lower power consumption.

 

For my opinion on the matter, this should be good if AMD can breach the typical 4.0 GHz barrier on the cores and the 3200 MHz RAM speed barrier. If that happens, then AMD is more competitive in the single-threaded fight, since Intel has a strong foothold in that area, and games love single-threaded performance, despite a move towards multithreading on the game engine side of things.

 

What I am interested in is the Ryzen Threadripper 2900 series of HEDT CPUs. If I can hear some news or rumors of that launch, then I'll be inclined to hold off upgrading my system for now and wait for that release, since what I do can take advantage of multiple threads, and with supported renderers, even use the CPU alongside the GPU for maximum rendering speeds. Sometimes the ray tracing quality seems better to me when rendered on the CPU.

 

I also want to know if this rumored Ryzen Threadripper 2900 CPUs will reuse the TR4 socket, and backwards compatible with the X399 chipset (requires a BIOS update before installing) with full support for (my educated guess) the X499 chipset.

 

Please don't take my word on Ryzen Threadripper for it, I could be wrong!

I still consider it rumor as there is no word direct from AMD confirming it (at least from a more reputable source other than WCCFTech). Once I can find any confirmation from them, I'll change it accordingly.

More USB 3 ports and/or Thunderbolt 3 are the only likely things to crop up. Doesn't look like there'll be much in the way of changes on the CPU side, so whatever the motherboard makers want to add on is probably the only big things.

The general assumption is that it's a nice bump, for two main reasons. Firstly, that Intel moved Coffee Lake up by over 2 months when they wouldn't have full scale production until this week and, secondly, because we have zero performance leaks going into Christmas buying season. (A lot of "leaks" are intentional; some aren't.)

 

Expectation should be 1-3% IPC increase in some situations (from memory sub-system and other tweaks) and 8-15% max clock increase. That's fairly predictable just given what we know about the node improvement from GloFo's own presentations. Maybe AMD found a bit more? We're not sure, but it seems unlikely, though the more interesting thing to watch for is the lower SKUs being able to clock a lot closer to the top ones. Maybe the top SKU maxes out at 4.5 Ghz, but the Ryzen 5 1600 replacement is sitting at 4.3 Ghz.  Lots of things could happen, so it'll be interesting to see.

This is all very exciting, I'm  going to sit tight and see what happens. Already have my Ryzen stuff, all i'd need to do is swap out the CPU and i'm golden. I'm so happy AMD is back from the grave!

Yup. Plus you can wait for buyers to sort out the best value.

 

In your case, with a 1080, you'll want one that clocks into the 4.3 Ghz range. Ryzen isn't going to touch Intel at the ultra-high end because of issues with Game Engines and Nvidia's DX11 driver, but it should saturate any non-Titan GPU at that level. That's the important part for most end-users.

Big issue with this title: Ryzen 2 isn't coming out in Q1 2018. (Ry)Zen+ is. Big difference between the two. Zen+ is an iteration on the current arch with some small IPC gains and a clock speed bump. Zen 2 is a new arch coming in 2019 according to that slide.
