Nvidia 378.78 drivers deliver huge gains in Tomb raider, a traditionally AMD optimized title.

 

Personnal opinion on what this may mean:

Pre-amble 

Pre-DX12 Nvidia was able to completely own the market with what were objectively simpler and smaller chips. From interviews over the years this was said to be caused by Nvidia having an insanely well optimized DX11 pipeline, essentially a more direct and elegant render path. AMD on the other hand managed to deliver similar performance by sheer brute force (think back to 7970 vs gtx 680), consuming more power and costing more to manufacture (bigger chip) in comparison to the green teams offering at the time. 

What this means today 

With Nvidia posting these sort of gains with DX12, it may that they've (bad pun incoming) cracked the code for how best to set up the driver pipeline and not have to take a more brute force approach that always comes with a new API, before either team realizes what code path would work best with their respective architectures.

If you actually read the chart they are using game release performance, which is pre-performance fixing patches for most of the games excluding ashes of the singularity. How much of the performance increase was actually Nvidias new driver rather than the actual patches being pushed through these games? If they had tested current patches before and after Nvidia drivers then we'd be talking. But this? It's nothing until I see someone test before and after with the drivers on these games

I swear to all that his holy, I hate it when they do this. They just did this a few weeks back, and people keep falling for it. That "33%" boost is a magical 7fps, because all of these numbers come from 4k. Sure, free performance is free performance, but let's not pretend these are not cherry picked results. They are literally advertising a 1.2fps difference in The Division as a 4% improvement. If they had more results worthy of boasting about, they'd be doing it. Do not let these large percentages deceive you, because when it comes to 4k, even the smallest numbers make up large percentages.

 

Also, read the fine print. This driver is getting these metrics by comparing to a driver from May of 2016. Nearly an entire year old driver.

Well techniclly they are right, they are just not going into specifics. It's not like they are lying, they are only "misleading" people.

Honestly at this point, I cannot pretend it's not intentional deceit. They've done it far too many times in the past (2x the performance "in VR" rings a bell). It would be one thing, if they'd compare it to a recent driver, but to dig as far back as almost a year, use 4k (where any minuscule difference in framerate constitutes a large percentage number) and then color your text dark gray on a black background, it's clear they are trying to trick people into thinking this driver is more than what it actually is. Had they compared this driver to something more recent, and provided multiple resolutions, I wouldn't have a problem with this at all, but we all know it wouldn't be newsworthy then.

 

This kind of awful, deceptive marketing needs to stop. It doesn't matter which brand you align yourself with, even Nvidia fanboys have to admit this is a shady indefensible practice.

The sad part is, it doesn't have to be that way. Especially with something like this. Free performance (even if it's as small as a single fps) is still free performance. Sure, it won't generate as much buzz as the deceptive "33%" improvement vs a year old driver at a high resolution, it won't come with any negative connotations either. I honestly can't think of any rational human being that would complain about an improvement, even if it's only a small one. However, I know many people that will see this article/graph, download this driver, then wonder why it's not having the impact that they think it will, simply because Nvidia decided to cherry pick the data and use very specific testing methodologies (and extremely small fine print).

 

I am fully aware that this is not an Nvidia-only issue too. AMD did this with Ryzen, and I was just as frustrated then as I am now. Intel did it with Kaby Lake, and we see it all the time in every other market. I just wish they didn't have to resort to this petty level of marketing.

Maxwell certainly as it still is fully supported by nVidia, not sure about Kepler though but then again those are considerably more outdated.

That makes two of us, still hoping Vulkan to become mainstream but truth be told I still play it all on DX11 when not my classics on DX10/OpenGL xD
