NVIDIA Unveils GeForce GTX 1080Ti 11GB Graphics Card: Available March 5th for $699

HKZeroFive

Crucify me for "reposting" but I decided to make a dedicated thread so people have a sound idea of what's going on with the GTX 1080Ti specs-wise, price-wise and availability-wise. This thread is not only dedicated to the GTX 1080Ti but also highlights some other bits such as the new GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 price drops as well as the unprecedented move of NVIDIA releasing special "overclocked" cards. More below.

Based on a not-quite-fully-enabled GP102 GPU (more on this in a second), like its predecessors the GTX 1080 Ti is meant to serve as a mid-generation performance boost for the high-end video card market. In this case NVIDIA is aiming for what they’re calling their greatest performance jump yet for a Ti product – around 35% on average – which would translate into a sizable upgrade for GeForce GTX 980 Ti owners and others for whom GTX 1080 wasn’t the card they were looking for.

However what the GTX 1080 Ti lacks in functional units it’s partially making up in clockspeeds, both in regards to the core and the memory. While the base clock has not yet been disclosed, the boost clock of the GTX 1080 Ti is 1.6GHz, about 70MHz higher than its Titan counterpart. More significantly, the memory clock on the GTX 1080 Ti is 11Gbps, a 10% increase over the 10Gbps clock found on the Titan and the GTX 1080. Combined with the 352-bit memory bus, and we’re looking at 484GB/sec of memory bandwidth for the GTX 1080 Ti.

Speaking of memory, as I mentioned before the card will be shipping with 11 pieces of 11Gbps GDDR5X. The faster memory clock comes courtesy of a new generation of GDDR5X memory chips from partner Micron, who after a bit of a rocky start with GDDR5X development, is finally making progress on boosting memory speeds that definitely has NVIDIA pleased. Until now NVIDIA’s GPUs and boards have been ready for the higher frequency memory, and the memory is just now catching up.

Moving on, the card’s 250W TDP should not come as a surprise. This has been NVIDIA’s segment TDP of choice for Titan and Ti cards for a while now, and the GTX 1080 Ti isn’t deviating from that.

Just in time for Pi Day, NVIDIA will be launching the card on the week of March 5th (an exact date has yet to be revealed). As for pricing, long-time price watchers may be surprised. NVIDIA will be releasing the card at $699, the old price of the GTX 1080 Founder's Edition (which itself just got a price cut). This does work out to a bit higher than the GTX 980 Ti - it launched at $649 two years ago - but it's more aggressive than I had been expecting given the GTX 1080's launch price last year.

(Side note, with the GTX 1080 getting a $100 price drop tonight, I think we'll find this new lineup very compelling to enthusiasts.)

In another interesting move, NVIDIA is going to be offering “overclocked” versions of the GTX 1080 and GTX 1060 with +1 Gbps memory speeds. Partners will be offering them with some undisclosed price premium.

1080oc.jpg

Here's the overall summary:

-Supposedly faster than the Titan XP as it possesses the same amount of CUDA cores but has slightly higher boost (1.6GHz) and memory clocks.

-11GB of 11Gbps of GDDR5X memory. 352-bit memory bus.

-250W TDP.

-11.5 TFLOPS of FP32 performance.

-Absence of DVI port.

-Priced at $699.

-Founder's Edition will cost the same as AIB MSRP.

-Available March 5th - which is next week!

-GTX 1080 price drop - $499 for AIB cards, $549 for FE cards.

-GTX 1070 price drop - $399 for FE cards, no confirmation on AIB cards.

-NVIDIA to sell "overclocked" variants of GTX 1060 (6GB?) and GTX 1080 8GB

So everybody and their dog was expecting the GTX 1080Ti to finally drop, and after months of rumours and teasing, we finally got the damn card. From the get go, one interesting move here is NVIDIA's decision to give the card 11GB of video memory which triggers my OCD immensely; from the looks of it, it appears to be 11GB of fast memory and 1GB of slow memory in order to avoid another 3.5GB GTX 970 "scandal". It's pretty apparent that NVIDIA has intentionally done this to position it below the Titan XP's 12GB of VRAM.

It was no surprise that it would immediately break the hearts of Titan XP owners as NVIDIA has continuously done for the past 4 or so years, but instead of giving a full-fat GP102 GPU or a further cut down one, they've gone a different route and simply bumped up the clockspeeds; technically making the GTX 1080Ti (like the GTX 780Ti) faster than its Titan variant. And to make Titan XP owners even more depressed, there appears to be no tangible reason to get the Titan XP over the GTX 1080Ti unless you need the extra 1GB of VRAM as compute power seems to be more powerful with the GTX 1080Ti. That's rough.

There's also no DVI port, which allows for better airflow supposedly. Although this may vary with AIB cards.

As for pricing, this is surprising. Many speculated somewhere between $799-$1000. No, NVIDIA has in fact announced it at a somewhat humble $699 and dropped the prices of its other two cards down. Could this be in preparation for AMD's Vega? Time will tell.

Also, in an unprecedented move, NVIDIA is planning to sell special "overclocked" GTX 1060s and GTX 1080s. Prices are currently unknown but I'm not exactly sure what to think of it... I honestly don't think it will be popular. Perhaps to people who are too scared or too uninformed about overclocking (although why would they be?), it might be appealing. Who knows.

Anyway, it's launching March 5th which is only next week. With that price tag, it's definitely going to sell like hot cakes and with no sign of AMD's Vega (seriously, that Capsaican and Cream presentation was disappointing), it only consolidates NVIDIA's hold onto the GPU market. Personally, not buying one. Holding out for Volta myself.

I'm more salty that it's MSRPing' for the same price as a GTX 1080 FE and within $50 of what I paid for my 1080 SC, and theoretically it should be 40% faster.

I haven't seen that crap since the 8800 GT.

EDIT: That 1080 FE price looks like a typo. I'm pretty sure it was $650.

This literally happens every ti launch. Original titan the 780ti performed the same. 980ti performed the same as a titan x. Now the 1080ti is also performing better and has that tiling caching technology as well. Its just that nobody learns from the past or dont care

It was $100 over the AIB base prices, at $699. 1070 was $70 over the base AIB prices.

Nope, I got the joke lmao.. It's strange, I'm used to seeing even numbers on VRAM, except with OEM cards.

It's usually 4, 6, 8, 10, 12.. not 11GB.

It's just 12 with one block disabled.

That's how most lower tiers of electronic components are made.

Just like an i3 is an i5 with 2 cores disabled.

They've probably been stockpiling the failed TXs with 1GB VRAM failed since release and just decided to chuck them onto the market as '1080 Ti'
