The LIGHTCANON - [flashlight]

Enderman

post-4438-0-99719600-1441257153_thumb.pn

*misspelled purposefully to be the first result in google searches for "lightcanon" ;)

Welcome to my custom flashlight build log!

The LightCanon is an aspheric lens flashlight designed for maximum throw.

Called "lightcanon" instead of "lightcannon" so that its easier to find on google, and also because I forgot cannon has two ns instead of one...

"Throw" is the distance the light beam can reach. In this case, a high power LED combined with a lens will give us a highly concentrated beam of light, theoretically reaching over 1500m ANSI throw distance.

The total cost of the project approximates almost $400 in parts.

Parts list:

-Adhesive black-out material

post-4438-0-56311200-1441161815.jpg

-Cree XP-G2 LED mounted on a Noctigon 20mm board

post-4438-0-20646200-1441161816.jpg

-Fasttech 100mm 5-120 degree aspheric lens

post-4438-0-63661400-1441161816.jpg

-Fasttech V10+ 5A LED driver

post-4438-0-17162200-1441161817.jpg

-Wavien RLT large collar

post-4438-0-65695300-1441161817.jpg

-Intel BXTS13A heatsink

post-4438-0-18126500-1441161818.jpg

-Arctic Silver Alumina thermal adhesive

post-4438-0-67545400-1441161818.jpg

-1S-6S LiPO battery voltage indicator

post-4438-0-13993400-1441161819.jpg

-Associated Reedy 1S 3.7V 8000mAh 70C LiPO battery

post-4438-0-52469500-1441161819.jpg

-100mm PVC sewer pipe

post-4438-0-93270300-1441161819.jpg

-assortment of cables, connectors, and switch

-thin 80mm 5V computer fan (from a laptop cooling pad)

The goal:

I am confident that this flashlight will be able to reach this distance, as other people using similar hardware have already reached this and more.

When the flashlight is finished we will really see how far it can go...

post-4438-0-79272700-1441161942_thumb.jp

^ it says 1200m (almost 4000ft) at the bottom center

That LiPo battery is scary... Those voltage alarms aren't very good, I have one for my quadcopter and it's not exactly accurate, it's like 0.3V off most of the time, perhaps that just because its drawing more when fully loading the motors.

Well it can deliver up to 560 amps...

thats true, its an RC car battery pack

typically you want those to be at least 2x required output by the car

im only going to be using it at 5A though, so it should last about 1.5hrs at full brightness

Ohh this looks good  :D

BTW for the 12V fan you might want an adjustable buck boost to go higher than the 3.7V output of the li-po battery.

Thanks! :)

im not actually using the fan from that cooler

I have a smaller 5v fan which works with 3v, so it will work fine with the 3.7v lipo

forgot to add that to the parts list :P

So your making something similar to what DIY Perks did?

sort of, but instead of going for a ton of lumens im going for maximum throw

which requires a really small LED, and a very large lens

UPDATE!

Made some progress on the flashlight body as well as some interior components...

The end cap 80mm slim fan for intake:

post-4438-0-28984300-1441689989.jpg

Cut some vents in the front of the flashlight for exhaust:

post-4438-0-81662200-1441689990.jpg

This is the intel TS13A 2011 CPU cooler. I used this cooler because it is exactly a 100mm circle and fits perfectly in the flashlight. It also has 140W TDP :)

post-4438-0-09960300-1441689993.jpg

The cooler with the mounting tabs bent upwards to fit and to be screwed in:

post-4438-0-69593300-1441689994.jpg

Arctic Cooling MX-4 thermal paste for the LED, just like my CPU!

post-4438-0-73633800-1441689996.jpg

This is the large Wavien RLT collar. It uses a "light recycling technology" to increase the brightness of the LED.

More of the light is focused forward rather than being wasted out the sides.

post-4438-0-07593500-1441689999.jpg

With the LED inside:

post-4438-0-77131000-1441690001.jpg

Its a perfectly spherical reflector directly centered on the LED:

post-4438-0-22166000-1441690004.jpg

Looks kinda cool IMO, and it does really make a difference, which I will show in a future post.

UPDATE!

So I have done some testing with temporary wiring and two AA batteries (only 3v and very little current)

As you can see its not bring at all, but everything does work :)

post-4438-0-23663900-1442108542.jpg

The point is very concentrated, but not a perfect square due to the lower quality of the lens.

post-4438-0-28154900-1442108543.jpg

There are barely any "rings" due to all the black light absorbing material , but some light does escape out the front ventilation (which I have recently fixed)

post-4438-0-23299400-1442108544.jpg

The light does not bother the eyes when looking at it from the front, not the hotspot.

post-4438-0-10834700-1442108545.jpg

Here you can see some of the side light leaks, which I fixed after taking these pictures...

post-4438-0-52429800-1442108546.jpg

Overall very satisfied with construction, cant wait to get the real battery and try it out on full power!

@Enderman Can you put this on roids so I can see if from across the world? Looks sick so far.

I think the earths gravity would need to be much stronger to bend a light beam so that it can reach the other side of the world :(

Some day I will find a way to perfectly collimate light, so it has a 0 degree beam (even lasers dont have a perfect 0-degree beam!)

And thanks :D

Wow, I wish my flashlight was badass enough to require a fan xD

A lot of people build flashlights this powerful but use a large chunk of metal as a passive heatsink and thats enough

I need to use a fan because there is no airflow inside that PVC tube which acts like insulation...

Also the LED produces a higher output when running at a lower temperature, so cooler is better :)

I was originally planning to cool it with liquid cooling, but that was going to be a lot more complicated and expensive. Maybe in the future, who knows...

Liquid cooling would be cool, what about one of these for a radiator, and of these for the pump?

I was thinking of an H50 and swapping out the radiator for one of those tiny ones...

But looking at the flashlight now I would need to make it longer to fit all that, plus the H50+extra rad would cost about $100-150

Definitely a good project for the future, but for now I'm out of moneys :P

UPDATE!

So I have finally received the battery, and here are some indoor shots of the flashlight and beam.

This is the 3.7V LiPO 1s 70C 8000mAh RC battery pack...it was not cheap, over $100 just for this + shipping/fees :(

post-4438-0-48440700-1443251026.jpg

Here you can see the switch and charging port. I am still waiting for my voltage display to arrive.

post-4438-0-98851700-1443251026.jpg

This is all the wiring inside, not the neatest cable management in this small space...

post-4438-0-49334800-1443251027.jpg

But the battery fits, so that's good!

post-4438-0-09582200-1443251028.jpg

This is the side view of the pretty much completed flashlight. (on the PVC pipe stand I made)

post-4438-0-02348400-1443251029.jpg

And the light at full power:

post-4438-0-97576800-1443251029.jpg

Very concentrated beam, only a few rings of spill.

post-4438-0-58486500-1443251030.jpg

Here I sprayed some water mist over the beam for visibility

post-4438-0-58410300-1443251031.jpg

Looking at the light from in front (but not in the hotspot) doesn't hurt the eyes at all:

post-4438-0-50788600-1443251032.jpg

And finally pointing at the tv (which absorbs tons of light) you can see the actual beam.

Outdoor pictures coming soon!

So I went outside tonight and got a bunch of great beamshots.

There is a lot of light pollution here in the city, as well as a FULL FREAKING MOON, but the beam is still clearly visible.

The center spot is not as intense as I expected it to be, but there are several things that could be causing this:

-The Wavien collar is not focused correctly (half a millimeter can make a huge difference)

I can try fixing this in my free time and hopefully get a more intense beam

-The lens is not perfect enough (you can see from some pictures that its not evenly refracting light)

I will be ordering more lenses from fasttech, one identical one and some other models for testing, hopefully I get a better quality one

-The cables going to the LED are causing restricted current (I highly doubt this since I tested them at 0.4 ohms, very little resistance)

I need to buy a multimeter that can measure amps, since my multimeter amp function is broken

Other than that it works great, has very long runtime, and remains extremely cool during operation! :D

Beamshots will be uploaded tomorrow morning

UPDATE!

Here are a bunch of beamshots of the Lightcannon, taken outside in the city with a bunch of light pollution as well as a full moon.

The images are taken at 400ISO, and look the same if not slightly darker than what I could see with my own eyes. (800ISO was way too bright)

This is from my backyard (these are not the greatest pictures because my camera didn't like to focus very well in the low light :( )

post-4438-0-16630400-1443379576.png

Side view of the Lightcannon you cansee quite a bit of light leaking out the ventilation, I'm working on fixing that.

Beam in the dark but not pitch black sky:

Here on the sidewalk, even with the bright streetlamps the beam is still visible!

Same place, different angle

Now this is pointing at a very dark green tree which soaks up tons of light:

Pointing at a repeater antenna about 200m away, looks much brighter because it is silver/white and reflects light better than a tree:

And finally pointing at a tree 200m away ( I will be doing longer range tests when I have time, this was just a "trial run" to make sure no issues occurred during use :) )

Proof of 200m distance:

I will work on tweaking the lens/ Wavien collar to maximize the beam intensity, and when I get that fixed we will do more tests at longer distances!

Just ordered some more parts from fasttech for testing (aka trial and error :P )

Another lens, this one 100mm but a few mm thicker

Another lens, this one 102mm and thinner

And another lens, this one also 102mm and even thinner

And finally a second LED driver, this one a different type (just for testing purposes, the one I have already works ok but its always nice to have a spare!)

I am going to be posting some comparisons of all these lenses soon so that people who also want to build an aspheric flashlight can choose based on how each lens performs.

PS-The Wavien collar WAS out of focus! Currently working on remounting it properly.
