CEO of Seagate: Nobody uses SSDs for storage

“There is no one that is using SSDs for storage,” said Steve Luczo, chief executive officer of Seagate, during the earnings conference call with investors and financial analysts. “I mean, maybe at the margin for replacing boot drives… I mean, maybe one or three per cent of the hierarchy is SSDs for storage. Most of your flash product is actually not hanging off the storage bus, it is fast memory.”

This might be true for now but I think this percentage will change dramatically in the next 5 years. Especially with PCI-E and m.2 

 

 

total available market of hard disk drives shrunk from 160 – 170 million units per quarter in 2010 – 2011 to around 110 – 111 million units in Q2 2015, based on estimates by Seagate and Western Digital. SSDs were of the key reasons why the number of hard drives sold per quarter decreased.

 

 

 

 

I think this statement is a little bit true with the dropping prices of SSD's of all sizes and many more companies entering the space at all ends, it won't be soon because hard drives sales start dropping even more. SSD's in the business space offer a lot more usability in Data servers and the server space as data is often moved around, accessed and everything which is where I don't think HDD's can keep up.

It's kinda true now. Almost nobody used SSDs to store media...

But it's a matter of time.. The performance benefits are just too great. Even in the server world SSDs allow you to lookup and filter through large amounts of data so much quicker.

And yea, seagate still has higher prices on their disks than pretty much everyone else, meaning that most likely people who are savy are going to get a cheaper disk that performs just as well.

Oh well, it'll be a shame if seagate gets dropped from the market, WD would almost certainly start a monopoly

As someone who's had to rescue data (or attempt) from many peoples failed drives, especially on laptops from drops, I sincerely hope your are being sarcastic.

i've had 13 year old hard drives run to this day 24/7.

For me double the price is when Ii'll likely 100% make the switch. If one SSD is cheaper than 2 HDDs in raid 1, good enough for me. Not that SSDs don't fail, but that's my price line.

I think it will take a long time for HHD to disappear completely, they're likely to cheaper per GB for some time yet. Personally I'm looking forward to having all my storage need being served by an M.2 drive or something similar, less cables to manage.

That's mostly been debunked, though the failure signs are there with HDDs in some cases, and more importantly, it's much harder to recover data from a failed SSD. If you have money, you can send off your HDD and there's many things that can be tried there to get all or at least part of the data back.

I agree. With HDDs, you just can't beat the price for how much space you get. And plus, when it fails, at least you can hear it when it fails. Try doing that with an SSD. It won't tell you audibly when it fails.

theyre like 5 times the price right now, but we're getting closer and closer each year!
