Geek and... Religious?

faziten

Normally techies, geeks, nerds, etc. are people of science. Science is opposed to dogmas such like religion, faith or, in general, any kind of belief that states facts without accepting discussion in the matter of correctness, possibility or existence...

Assuming anyone who is in a tech forum is at least a techie or geek i may ask:

Are you religious or have any belief in a higher force or entity (be specific in which one, or explain what do you believe in)?Leave jokes and funny references like "The force" ,"Neo", etc for other topic.

Disclaimer:

First: This topic is not intended to flame, poke fun, laugh off, compare any religion, faith or belief.

Second: As colleges let's have a proper discussion. If you get mad or just can't handle the topic keep on scrolling to another.

Third: This topic is based on my own curiosity, will not serve as nothing more than a simple informal statistic of religious people who happen to like technology.

He is taking a break from the forum IIRC.

I'm a Bible-Believing Christian.

Most of my friends are Bible-believing Christians and have quite successful jobs in technology and love it. Geek out like none other quite often.

I run/ran a gaming/geek clan with Christians, non-Chtistians etc.

Never really had any issues :)

To start off, I'm Christian. People often say that religious people are against science, but I really don't think that that is the case; it is the extremists that are against it. I go to a science/technology school, and its split pretty evenly with the proportions of people in the area. I am friends with people of numerous worldviews, and we just don't make a big deal of it when talking. Almost everybody that I actually know that is christian thinks that science is perfectly valid. The reason many people think that all religious people are against science is that there is a very vocal minority that says that. I really don't get when people say science and religion are opposing sides, they heavily overlap.

Anyway agnostic, I feel I am too inexperienced to make a definitive answer. I have experienced things that makes me wonder, but other times I find it difficult to rationalize everything.

Do we really need these threads?  they don't go anywhere good.  Everyone is just an armchair expert who thinks they know better than everyone else.  The truth of the matter is even academicians who have decades of experience on this topic dispute many aspects of the religion and humanity.

To hard to comprehend?  basically if you think you're right, you're wrong.

Grammar and spelling is not indicative of intelligence/knowledge.  Not having the same opinion does not always mean lack of understanding.

I believe people can be logic oriented and spiritual at the same time since it's a very personal thing, prayer can be seen as a form of meditation and resolving inner conflicts.

It's usually when you involve organized religions that things get nasty in a hurry.

I don't believe in a higher entity, but everybody should decide this for themselves. What I hate, is when religion or someones beliefs are interfering with me, and are getting in my way.

In a way, science actually supports religion.

I go to a Christian school, so I get a chapel service every week. Good stuff, most of the time.

A lot of Christians are anti-gay and anti-science and anti-everything. I support gay rights, am a huge nerd in science, and I am pretty tolerant. I don't get why the minority of weird and crazy christians are believed to be the majority of us. It's kinda rude.

I'm neither, in all honesty i'm just not one who is interested in any of it, but respect those who believe. I was baptised a Catholic and went to a Catholic high school. I don't have an issue with religion, until someone starts using it as an excuse to hate on someone because they're different, attack another person, denomination, race, gender etc, that's just not cool.. But if someone chooses to believe in a higher power, deity or whichever, then that is their own business and none of mine. Unless you tell me I should have faith and I am a bad person for abstaining from believing then I will have a problem. I am happy with who I am and how I choose to live.

I think I have more of a problem with those I know who go out of their way to gloat that they're anti-religion and spew hatred on to those who're religious. Since a lot of the people they force this upon have done nothing wrong to them or anyone, they don't deserve undue hatred. I think I just know too many horrible people :/
