I still haven't upgraded to the latest MacOS yet, how do you like it?

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

It's quite nice, even for an unsupported machine (officially this MBP only runs up to Catalina but with OpenCore Legacy Patcher it works fine). If you didn't say it was 10 years old I wouldn't have guessed.

I don't notice any direct improvements over Big Sur, though a downside is iTunes via Retroactive doesn't work yet, though 12.2 is supposed to make the Music app an iTunes v2. That probably won't matter to ya though.
I will say I'm impressed that it still supports TB1 and FireWire. I don't believe this was from OCLP either; they just worked straight up.

Yes you only get the back because I took a crappy front photo and I’m not taking it out of my Power Mac just to take a picture of it ok! If you want to see it go in the spoiler below.

You really want it that bad?

For the Power Mac G3 B&W that Apple rebadged as a G4 by changing some colors and throwing a G4 in it that they sold for 6 weeks.

Yes, I actually secured that heatsink to my Rage 128 Pro with crappy thermal paste, a rubber band, paper, a screw and a nut, and hot glue, even though it never got hot in the first place.

No, I’m not putting Blowymatron Sr. in my Power Mac G4. Not every G4 is a wind tunnel Mac, nor does it need to be, plus I think that’d kill the power supply.

Alright so super quick review:

is it noticeable over the Freyas, absolutely

what do they sound like, they sound like the music is supposed to, and you hear the whole damn thing

how are they built, like little pieces of art

how’s the cable, better than any other cable I’ve handled and it’s just stock, not to say there aren’t better cables but compared to any other stock cable I’ve handled, it’s extremely nice

theyre not heavy or light in any specific frequency range, everything seems very balanced and clear, when the bass is meant to get dirty low it gets dirty low and everything else going on at the same time sounds as it should

and when the treble gets extremely high it doesn’t get sharp and peaky, and it doesn’t overpower everything else

if you have not heard audio hardware like this, and this isn’t even close to the super high end stuff, it will ruin anything else for you, my freyas sound bland and treble spiky, and the starfields sound like muffled bass cannons, even though I know from experience that both of those are great options in their respective price ranges

are they worth 1000$?

well, on the standards of are you getting something worth 1000$, absolutely, but only if you’re really into this weird little niche of audio stuff

if you’re listening to 384khz 32 bit flacs and DSD256 albums, and for some reason can actually notice a difference, these are absolutely fantastic for a tonally balanced sound signature in easily portable form

if you are not yet into this kind of thing, have more money than sense, and are just looking to escape your dirty buds, for the love of god don’t go straight to the $1000 range because while it will be very noticeable immediately even without the backing of above cd quality audio, you’re diving head first at the empty pool that is the audio nerd space and you really gotta be ready to get into a bunch of stuff 99% of people don’t care about before you’d really enjoy something like this over some 150-300$ iems which would also be a huge jump without nearly so much of the cost

C95C19F4-2341-4FE3-9960-B5B94D53BD1A.thumb.jpeg.395e1fe1a8e2078b95ce60cc7d45c41a.jpeg

these are super fun for me, they’re a nice addition to my little collection of stupidly expensive ear hole sound makers, and now 2nd place on the largest amounts of money my bank has questioned me sending to China, but for everyday listeners this is not it chief

theyre a product that wouldn’t be fully utilized just plugging them into your laptop to listen to Spotify, they’re right at the point where getting some equipment that can play high res audio to them is required, and on the very high end they’re just the first stepping stone for people who are already well into the 4 digits of audio hardware and really aren’t suited for that market

to further detail that aspect, my little Walkman here is barely holding on, these require a lot of power as far as iems go and playing DSD means I’m at 120/120 volume, the A55 is about the bottom of what can be used to play to in ears like this, and it’s 230$ on its own, you want something with a bit more power and ideally a balanced output, or a desktop dac/iem focused amp

to simplify that even further because its an issue I see a lot of people who have money to burn run across, this is the point where you’re not just past the land of diminishing returns with conventional hardware and audio formats, but you passed it 700$ ago

If you’re gonna buy something like this you need to already have something that plays high resolution audio and a library of high resolution audio files

This was because it had the original plastic wrap on. I tore it off and then thought to take pictures.

New Monitor! - Sceptre C325B-QWD168
32" Curved Monitor, 2560 x 1440, 165 Hz

Incredibly happy with this purchase (painful on my wallet, tho 662170920521302023.gif).

It's a significant upgrade from the 24" monitor (E255B-1658A, pictured on the left) I’d been using up 'til now.

SO MUCH MORE SPACE.

Freaking white backgrounds hurt so much more now.

And having a vertical monitor for Discord and game guides while I have the main game in fullscreen is 800649355559174175.webp?size=20.

unknown.png

Vertical Monitor + Main Monitor Screenshot

Featuring Mass Effect, 'cos why not. 😛

If you don't have a second vertical monitor now, do get one.

120% recommend. 818647164766912613.gif

Exciting hardware aside, I also threw some money at EA and added more games to my Origin library:

unknown.png

’Chew’s Origin Library

New Games
Though, some of these games are 10+ years old at this point?

  • Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition for $4.79 from Origin.
  • Dragon Age II for $1.79 from Fanatical, went for $1.99 from Origin.
    • Base game only. I’ll get the DLC Bundle whenever that drops below $7.
  • Mass Effect: Andromeda - Deluxe Edition for $4.99 from Origin.
    • Not as captivating as Mass Effect 2 / Mass Effect 3, but definitely leagues better than Mass Effect 1.

Grabbed 'em during Origin’s EA Holiday Sale. 748472219784708176.gif?size=20

I've already played through these games multiple times, but obtained them via dubious means. Now I'm acquiring them through legitimate channels. 👀💦

Thank you. I can't tell for sure, but I have seen it online at $1200. I'm lucky I got one somewhere around $910 if you include shipping and taxes. Still a lot of money compared to the MSRP, but I'm selling my Vega 56 on eBay so I hope I'll get some decent money out of it.

As of one I'm still figuring out how to set up that GPU without breaking everything. It's good to be back on Nvidia because I know that I'll only need to install the GeForce Experience and let it do everything for me.

LOL actually after playing with it tonight I really don't think I'll need to upgrade it any soon. I feels great to be able to play Shadow of the Tomb Raider in ultra settings, with RTX on, in 4K with DLSS, with the card entirely silent. I think DLSS in the future of gaming and suddenly 8K gaming sounds less dumb and more of a possibility.

Yeah I know prices are ridiculous these days but in my case I would call it decent, especially considering the fact that I'm also selling my older card for a relatively good amount of money. I bought it for €240 years back in 2019 and the current bid on eBay is $460. Heck I got nearly $700 last week but the winner never paid for it so I had to relist it.
