Seems like a fairly decent phone. Though the lack of a headphone jack is a major disappointment. Though maybe they will make an alternate case in the future. But until then I will continue rocking my 8 year old Sony that magically works despite literally falling apart by now...

 

Though, personally I would have gone all torx screws, since philips ones are fairly easy to round out the head, especially these small screws. And one rarely needs to apply force to do such. In other words, I suspect that people will get more problems in regards to broken screw heads than much else. However, I can see it as logical to have a security torx for the screws that aren't intended to be end user removed.

 

Also, in regards to water pressure, a milk jug on its side doesn't have a higher pressure than a meter of water, unless it is huge.... (The pressure is proportional to the density of the liquid and the depth at which one measures the pressure. However, a milk jug will have an enclosed air space, so that gas could have pressure in it. But a milk jug will typically be stored in a fridge that is cooler than ambient, so if anything that air pressure is likely slightly negative. Since the air getting trapped within is usually warmer ambient air from outside the fridge.)

Being able to swap out the battery halfway through the day is a really nice feature. I miss being able to do this, like I could with dumb phones and early smartphones.
However, in the video it looks like that back panel clips on very securely, which makes me worry it wouldn't withstand being removed more than a handful of times before the clips start to wear out and you need to worry about your phone falling apart from even a small drop.

Bitter pill to swallow for some maybe, but a lot of the "lost" features of older smartphones that are now lamented went away in response to what customers said they wanted at the time. Swappable battery is a perfect example. I had a Galaxy S3 back in the day where you could pop off the plastic cover on the back and swap the battery, or even get a different back cover and put a chunkier higher-capacity battery in. But everybody derided Samsung for the S3 being plastic and "not feeling as premium" as phones with shells made of metal/glass. So away went the plastic, and away went the swappable battery, and now people have the more "premium-feeling" devices they said they wanted (which as often as not they cover in some obnoxiously chunky Otterbox-esque case anyway). 

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

Designing around stupid requests while keeping the features should be the company job though. For example something like the LG G5, even though it had a metal unibody it managed around the limitations by doing a completely different way of making its battery swappable, it wasn't water-resistant but that could likely also have been worked around in some way.

For anyone wants to see how easy the battery swap is on the LG G5.

This is a good follow-up from the Surface tear-down problems you were experiencing. Many devices now are being put together badly, either deliberately (thanks Apple) or just because the designers chose to use inferior parts that fail prematurely (thanks Samsung). In the worst case it can even be both.

 

Either way this model is not sustainable.

 

Environmentally these materials need proper recycling and cannot be disposed like trash. That requires manpower to do, special plants set up to disassemble, then separate what can be recycled and what can't. Notice Apple is hush hush about the exact percentage of how much of an iPhone does get reused, never mind phones and batteries that never make it back to a recycling plant and end up in a landfill somewhere or in the belly of a large ocean animal. What dirty secrets does Apple keep that they won't let us see what they do with the aluminum, lithium, silicon, etc... and parts they cannot recycle. And no, Samsung are no different - they share just as much guilt in this practice as Apple.

 

Then there are the economic factors. Number one being that material being reused has already been paid for by a previous customer, or even customers multiple times over - how many times do you think that new iPhone 13 has been paid for already from materials salvaged from previous throwaway donor phones? Ask yourself who is getting rich here? Their level of greed does not stop there - how about a software brick that makes perfectly working older models slow down to a crawl forcing users to upgrade! Already the prices of aluminum, silicon and lithium (pretty much any precious metal) are rising - prices that will continue to rise as these rare Earth resources are finite/limited and becoming harder to find and mine. Yet here these manufacturers are encouraging consumers to pay full price, throw away and repeat! There comes a breaking point where people will get sick and tired of spending their hard-earned disposable income on brand-new replacement phones/tablets/laptops when repairs and replacement parts could keep their devices going an extra 2 years easy. And this is already evident in low-income households and in countries where dropping $700+ on a new smartphone every 2-3 years is, let's be honest, a luxury. These people need that money to put food on the table and for other uses, not feeding the piggy bank of some corporate fat cat.

 

And there comes that last reason - ethics. What kind of a corporate leader can sleep well at night knowing they are milking the worlds disposable income, depleting the Earths resources, contributing to an e-waste disaster and then making the speech on stage that they are "for the environment, for the consumer and for the future". The only thing they are for is how to take the money that's out there still for themselves and give the finger to the environment. Companies like Apple are setting a very dangerous precedence, and the more control (money) we give them the less accountable and responsible they will become.

 

It's funny to remember back when Apple started the whole aluminum and glass iphone thing where the tech press would jump on the idea that this was such a "premium feel" compared to other smartphones that were plastic and had swappable batteries. Today we have gotten to the point where we are covering up those "premium feel" smartphones with HIDEOUS Otterboxes, skins, bumpers and other ugly cases... only to sacrifice both repairability and looks while gaining NOTHING.

 

Compatibility with multiple Android version is good, but I am concerned if those newer OSes will be bottlenecked by the hardware. Then there is the issue of app updates that can potentially bork the experience when they don't work WITHOUT updating the OS first. Forward compatibility with OSes does little if the apps you use can't support backward compatibility the same. Then it's the APPS forcing you to throw away the device and get a new one!

I don't see why I should carry around a power bank, those are usually the size of a phone. The need for power banks with phones are only because the batteries aren't easily replaceable.

I'm surprised at how expensive the Fairphone is, it would be more ideal for them to price it less than $400. Although maybe worth it for people that don't replace their phone every year, instead of having to buy a whole new phone when the battery starts to fail, you can easily swap the battery. And being able to upgrade the camera would be nice. I'd consider a Fairphone if it was for sale in the US, and if it had a 3.5mm jack.

Thats another reason I don't really care about fairphone. Its not really modular like framework laptops are, for example.

Better luck next time, I guess. I don't understand; they're clearly not going for a trend chaser here, so why spend the extra money on putting a hole in the screen for the sake of a few more percent of screen-body ratio?

This is not quite fair, iPhones are not put together that badly at all, if you look at iFixit teardown they tend to complement for not using glue (at all) and using a LOT of screws (many devices they teardown end up having some glue within them). yes theses screws are differs sizes etc but they are screws and not glue even the battery is not glued in but attached using sticky strips you an pull on to remove.  

The only hard part about tearing down an iPhone is getting through the water-dust seal and that is to be expected if you want that level of water protection you can't do it with a simple rubber seal.
