MSI makes a RTX 3090 look like a GTX480

Man this thing is ugly and cheap looking. no proper backplate, it looks like something I'd see in a OEM PC

Who does rear facing plugs anymore? Also it’s clearly a computer rendering.  I’m not putting any store in this one.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

I don't think a dual slot blower can tame this generation's GPU, especially the 3080 and 3090

 

Either way it's either a well cooled card, or it's a very accurate replica of the 480

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

GTX 480 except it's THICC and hotter. I wonder how well this would do as a heater. I assume, or at least I hope that the larger cooler and fan will be able to cool the 3090. 

Still a bit odd to see blower RTX 3090 cards, like Asus and Gigabyte also made a blower style 3090, and the thing that worries me the most is that they're all smaller than the 3090, they're thinner, and shorter, but I'd love to see this card reviewed. I could this MSI card working well in a 'retro' gaming setup. Though I'm not even sure the GTX480 is worth being called 'retro'.

Hopefully people see this card as a cheap and easy water cooling candidate, and nothing more. I would highly doubt that this card fares well outside a server rack with extreme airflow.

 

And if you're looking for a "cheap" RTX 3090, you're barking up the wrong tree.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

They also make the cards effectively longer which decreases the case compatibility.  My understanding is it was a net loss.  That’s why they moved in the first place.  There was massive complaint. It could be less of a problem for short cards I suppose.  For long cards it could be a real problem.  They might still make sense for enterprise stuff.  Rack mounts are large. 

If there is some other article about them that has an actual photo and doesn’t treat them as a rumor, I would be more willing to believe they happened.  Given info though?  It’s less than was available for a lot of things that never came to pass.

Rear connectors and a 2-slot blower design? This has got to be designed for use in servers - a replacement for the blower-style titans they used to use. Even the shroud seems to be designed with the idea of these being butted up next to each other - the plastic at the rear is shallower, allowing air to flow around the fan hub and through the fin array, exiting at the top by the IO. Exactly how most servers work.

To clarify: I see over their whole 3090 lineup, with one card with the connectors on the back they increased their total compatibility.   Top mounted power connectors are real hassle for many smaller cases. nVidias solution with angled is actually quite good, don't build height.

Traditionally Nvidia has been very strict with requiring connectors on top to ensure that Geforce cards are harder to use in servers, I suspect only RTX 3090 will be allowed to have this even though I wish RTX 3080 will get it too. Non retail cards have been made in the past on bulk order through AIBs with connectors on the end but any AIB that does it doesn't talk about it.

I’m not sure that is the cause, though it might have become a reason.  It used to be power plugs were always on the back and people building PCs complained that it made the card length a useless number because it did not include space for the ports and people would buy cards thinking they would fit their case that wound up not doing so.  I’ve had old Nvidia consumer cards such as an 8800gt, but I don’t remember where the ports were.  Looked up some old pics and an found old 8800gt with ports on the back.

This is confusing.  There is both 10 and 20 series card with power connectors on the back.  My last card was a EVGA Kingpin 1080 Ti and that one had also power connectors on the back.  Was never interested in 20 series but I bet there is examples there to.

 

Edit: Just did a quick google on Kingpin 2080 TI and guess what?

Crap my images wont show properly but it has the power connector in the back.

Sure and that is very old before GPGPU was even possible so not a thing. Every GPU after CUDA compute came out and Nvidia saw Geforce cards used in servers they've had the requirement to have the power connectors on the top of the cards.

So it’s an issue with CUDA for Nvidia, or at least has become one.  There was still lots of complaint about rear facing plugs for the reason mentioned though.  I can see how Nvidia might have discovered another reason to to it, but that doesn’t alter it being a much complained about thing.  The 8800gt wasn’t the last gpu I bought with rear plugs.  It was the last one that I specifically remember being Nvidia though other than a 970 packed up in its box that I didn’t want to open to check.

The very first thing that entered my mind when I saw the position of those connectors. Supposedly the notorious Error Code 43 is not present on RTX 3000 so you could drop 2 of these into a 2U easily and pass them to VMs for gaming or rendering.

And with those connectors the card is still way shorter than many, many monster coolers that came afterwards, so the argument of case compatibility is dubious at best.

I for one would love to see more options with horizontal connectors at the back, it would have been more convenient than vertical connectors at the back in a number of cases (and either is better than connectors in the middle of the card, which is the worst, angled or not).

The only caveat is that it has a side exhaust too. So better don't put literally next ot each other, as in MSI's picture, but in a motherboard with some additional spacing in between...

I remember that this argument has happened before.  This is a repetition.  There is some difference because there is more room in modern cases because the HD stack is no longer there.  It may be enough to make rear plug cards acceptable again.  We will see what the manufacturers do. There was a period where rear plug cards got panned for it and sold more poorly so they disappeared. I doubt the companies particularly care where the plug goes except that statement about Nvidia using plug placement to keep gaming cards out of servers.  It wouldn’t be hard to make an adapter that would turn a side plug card into a rear plug card or visa versa, so I suspect the whole top mount thing wouldn’t be especially effective if people cared all that much.
