NIC comparability with Old Prebuily

Go to solution Solved by Electronics Wizardy,

Thats a x2 card and your trying to put it in a x1 slot.

what features do you want in the nic? Your gonna want a x1 nic here

I am trying to install a pcie NIC (QNAP QXG-2G2T-I225) into an older prebuilt PC (Dell XPS 8100). The PC currently has a gpu installed in the x16 slot. The specification on the nic says it is a PCIe 2.0 x2 card.

The remaining pcie slot on the pre built motherboard is "Gen2 x1 slot bi-directional speed — 500 MB/s" according to the manual.

I tried to install the network card, but couldn't seem to get the card to fit. The nic has a little notch on the green PCB ahead of the gold pcie contacts. That notch seemed to interfere with the properly installing the card.

Did I order the wrong network card? And is it an insane idea to cut the "notch" off the PCB since it appears to not have any traces?

Gotcha rookie mistake. I was looking to add a 2.5 gig connection to directly connect to a nas in the same room. Thanks! @Electronics Wizardy
