AMD focused on showcasing Ryzen 9 5900X processor (which will cost 549 USD) in comparison to Ryzen 9 3900XT. The CPU is expected to be 26% faster in 1080p gaming (with high-quality preset). AMD also revealed that their 5900X CPU was also able to break the 600 point barrier in Cinebench R20 single-threaded benchmark.

Additionally, AMD also revealed Ryzen 7 5800X (8-cores/16-threads, 4.7 GHz boost) at 449 USD, Ryzen 5 5600X (6-core/12-thread with 4.6 GHz boost) at 299 USD and it’s a 16-core model called Ryzen 9 5950X. The latter will retail at 799 USD. It is also the only CPU in the lineup to offer a 4.9 GHz boost clock. The 5950X features 16-cores and 32-threads. With a 4.9 GHz boost clock, this processor will offer 5 to 27% better performance in content creation workloads compared to Ryzen 9 3900XT and up to 29% better gaming performance. This processor will launch on November 5th at the price of 799 USD.

Thoughts: I will probably buy this chip as long as a new motherboard once the scalping ends. Hopefully it won't be as bad as what is going on with the 3000 series. What will you expect from this chip? Obviously I would wait for the reviews first before I make decision. Other than that, considering the performance of the 6950XT(?) is still somewhat slower in comparison to the 3080 (other than Borderlands 3), I wonder how well will AMD price it?

I expect overall improvement but not enough to dethrone intel for raw performance in gaming or single threaded tasks.

 

Multi threaded tasks they only compete with themselves currently.

 

Propably a nice upgrade for those on ryzen 1000 or 2000 series but doubt it'll be significantly better then 3000.

 

Will have to wait for independent reviews how much the performance gain is.

 

Pricing propably similar to ryzen 3000 launch.

Maybe they skipped the 4000 series because it was so powerful it's already a whole generation ahead

I mentioned this in LTT Discord...I've been waiting for 6 months it seems for the "right time" to upgrade...

Had to wait for new Ryzen, then new Nvidia, then new Ryzen again...but I can't get the new Nvidia for another few months.
By that point it will be wait for new Intel?

 

I'm hoping to see better single thread performance, overall.

IPC increases are also nice.

Just bought myself a 4400mhz C16 kit as an early birthday present, just in time for the release of Zen 3. I really hope the IMC on these are fun to play with so I can finally retire my 8700k to a life of easy ITX light work. The rumors of dual unified memory controllers on Zen 3 definitely have me excited.

OT: didn't people just tell me last year 3600 is all I'd ever need and now I'm supposed to fork out again, and probably next year too!?

 

(I'm pretty happy with my CPU btw and no plans to replacing it but that's pretty ridiculous anyways, just because they keep churning out new CPUs every year doesn't mean you actually have to buy them..  give me a break lol)

Right now the 1700's I have absolutely do what I need them to do, I will likely look at them (new CPUs), think about buying them - but in the end it will not be worth purchasing on my end.  I have enough loop parts sitting to make another massive loop and push my secondary 1700 to close enough to 3700x numbers as well if I feel like investing the time.  Both are golden samples (both OC to 3.8ghz all core on stock voltages, I haven't pushed the secondary one further but that alone gives me confidence it can hit 4.1/4.2ghz like my currently OCd 1700).

I'm running a similar Intel 8086k on my main gaming system, and I don't feel a need to upgrade. However, I do have and use multiple systems. If I'm going to build another gaming system forward looking (for TV use), I think an 8 core Zen 3 would likely be the new sweet spot. I don't trust my 3700X enough to use it in that application.

IMO Zen 2 is held back from scaling to bigger workloads by the lack of ram and infinity fabric bandwidth, so anything that may alleviate that would be welcome. Making the CCX bigger is one part helping that.

Can't wait for benchmarks I'm undecided if I want to drop back to 8 cores or stick with 12.  Its pretty much a free CPU change if I drop to 8 cores.  I've dropped before I had a 2950x before the 3900x.

The impression I am getting is people trying to jigsaw together various rumors and bits think zen 3 will be ipc/clock increases over zen2 which will primarily go after single thread increases  Whereas 11th gen intel seems to be going after electrical efficiency.  My suspicion is this means that zen3 will be close to 11th gen intel in single thread (on which side of close I do not know) while 11th gen intel will be closer to zen3 in efficiency than 10th gen was to zen2.  How much I do not know.  There will be a period though where zen3 is competing against 10th gen intel and I suspect that will not go well for intel.  11th gen intel will compete at first against zen3, then whatever happens after zen3.  I’ve heard “zen4” but I have no idea what that means.

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Zen1/Zen2 boost clocks are unrealistic as it barely ever hit that from what I understand the whole point of the upcoming 150W TDP is to sustain much higher clocks for multi-core so it will not only benefit single process games but ones that need 4,8, etc threads.

As long as they measure the same its going to pull more energy and in general it usually HIGHER than what they say.  Also what I wrote about sustaining higher clocks for multi-core was from "leaks" I didn't derive that from TDP.

So far my main use for my PC is purely only for gaming so hopefully AMD can improve on that.

Currently using my shitty i7-4770 and when I wanna upgrade, I wanna make it big or don't upgrade at all!

If you keep waiting like this technology will keep leaving you behind. It's a fast paced industry.

 

If you desperately need an upgrade, buy the best you can afford now and then wait until you desperately need an upgrade again. That way you don't get caught up in "what ifs" like this. But of course be smart, like if there's an AMD event next week at least watch it, even though the chips won't come out for weeks. But don't be one of those people who were mad about buying the RTX 2080Ti 5 months before it got replaced.

SSD drives too I've known about the 980 pro for a while but there is the WD SN850 and a slew of E18 drives coming this and next month with 7GB/5GB+ performance.  Ton of stuff coming out right now.
