Amazon reports a 747% increase of Xbox One X sales

IAmAndre

As the next generation Xbox consoles pre-orders are open, a huge increase of Xbox One X consoles has been reported. Apparently people are confused with the Xbox product naming, so they are confusing the One X with the Series X.

Quotes

Quote

the search page for “Xbox Series X” shows multiple listings of the One X, including one with a Best Seller label. The actual Series X listing, which appears at the top of the results page, doesn’t display details like price or packaging art.

This definitely cannot happen with the PlayStation as Sony has been exemplary in this regard, keeping even the logo unchanged. I'm not sure where Xbox is going with that but we should see a couple more weird names in the years to come like Xbox Series X Slim or Series X Pro.

For this particular issue I'm curious to see how they will handle the number of returns and the disappointed kids on Christmas, or even the people who might think that they already have the latest Xbox (that's reminiscent of the Wii U).

As Sheldon Cooper pointed out, the naming has always been a mess. They first released the Xbox so you expect the following gen to be the Xbox 2... Well no, it's 360! And the following gen? Xbox One. One like the number of seconds they took to think about it.

Not surprising.  Half the time I search for info on the system, I get stuff on the One X or One S

Not too surprised. But they did discontinue the one x over a month ago so I doubt the stock is high enough to fulfill all the confused orders.

I am far from an expert in this so please correct me if I’m wrong.

Someone really wanted the numbers to be 747. Maybe because they know practically all commercial 747-400s are going to be retired from covid rip..

they don't gain anything from this since buyers will just return it.

They shot themselves in the foot with a rocket launcher on this. That's why I like Apple's naming scheme for their phones. iPhone 6, 7, etc. Same with PlayStation. PlayStation 3, 4, etc. Someone at Microsoft will get fired, but it won't be the right person.

I'm not saying Microsoft does or that the naming was on purpose.  I'm just saying it's terrible so I'm not surprised people get confused.

Microsoft's naming scheme hasn't made sense since the original Xbox. Pretty much just add Direct to the front and you have the reasoning. As long as each console used a new API, it'd work just fine. Xbox8, Xbox9, Xbox 11, Xbox 12...

Microsoft's naming scheme is an absolute trainwreck of dumpsterfires. They could easily call them XBOX, XBOX 2, XBOX 3, XBOX 4 etc and add special tags like XBOX 5 and XBOX 5S for what's otherwise XBOX Series S. And when they'd run out of numbers alone, cal it XBOX X1, X2, X3, X4 and still be able to stick extra stuff on to it like XBOX X5S. Just be bloody consistent about it between series.

Meanwhile, Sony with PlayStation 1, 2, 3, 4 and now 5.

Playstation 1 and PS One were different. The 2 has 2 different hardware configs that have different capabilities, the 3 has 4 models of which one has 2 variants where one plays PS2 games and one doesn't.

It was usually literally separated as "Slim" and "Fat" version...

You know, as bad as Xbox naming is, the shops with their goddamn search algorithms aren't free of blame too, so many times I've been offered stuff which didn't fit my search terms, but looked similar... People are bound to make mistakes, especially when in a hurry.

I honestly feel so bad for all those parents trying to buy the new consoles for their dumb kiddos who'll go on a tantrum if they can't get any. It's not bad enough that we have people buying 5 of them to resell but now they are even going to end up with the wrong one which they probably paid full MSRP for. I hope Microsoft gets sued and perhaps after they pay people a couple of millions they'll get the hint.

Get sued? I'm not defending shitty naming conventions but the customers are the one not doing their due diligent.

You know, kinda like how everything is a Nintendo or a Playstation depending on how old your parents are?

My parents always got that wrong. Grandparents didn't really understand what video games were.

To be fair my grandparents didn't play much after the N64 and that was mainly for grandkids but they didn't call the PS2 a Nintendo.

The problem is it's always been that way. Parents are the ones buying gifts for their kids and if your communication towards the people who aren't into video games at all sucks, you will find yourself in a Wii U like situation.

The sales rank has gone down so it does look like cancellations or refunds are happening... at Amazon at least. I imagine it was probably the same at every retailer today.

I might just be back after the last few years because Spez is an idiot and I'm making a point to start staying away from Reddit.
