OK, So if we want to skip Throw3 in Javelin then I will lose 451 tasks (~34,000 pts) due to tasks that have a deadline on the 14th. Not a significant lot.

 

By my calculations, assuming I can keep bunkering without issue, I should be able to bring 800,000 points to Throw3 or 1,000,000 to Throw4 (~200,000 PPD)

 

How about we wait until after the start of Thow3 and see if the last event or Javelin Throw date has been announced and make the call then.

 

The rules state:

... on the third day prior to the start for the Sprint and one other discipline. Each day of Javelin Throw is announced three days in advance. While all disciplines start and end at 00.00 UTC, the projects may be announced at different times (00.00 UTC, 06.00 UTC, 12.00 UTC, 18.00 UTC) to avoid that some teams are always surprised in their sleep.

So it looks like the Sprint has to be announced in the next 24-hours if it is to start the 15th or in the next 48, if it is to start on the 16th and end on the 19th.

 

Likewise, if Throw 5 starts on the 16th (3 throws back-to-back - worst case) then it has to be announced in the next 24 hours.

Hmm Sprint is going to be CPU isn't it? Might have to move everything to that so it may all be moot depending on the start date of the sprint

Not guaranteed as they do state "more than 1 GPU event is possible" and we've had two now so it is more likely to be a CPU only due to the paucity of GPU projects. I can't see them doing Einstein again as a quorum2 would be just nasty for the final event

Today was a shit-show. Work interfered big time getting bunkers changed-over. One of the VPNs stopped working so I had to transplant my hardware at home back to the office, get it setup and deal with it.

The culprit turned out to be a broken tab on a RJ-45 connection on the management interface. Here's my temporary fix:

Now I have to schedule a maintenance window to move to another port once the networks guys provision it.

 

Took 5 minutes to figure out the issue after the two hours to get setup at work again. It was a perfect storm. She-who-must-be-obeyed had just left with one of the kids for some Bloodwork with our only car so I had to wait for them to return then when I finally did get to the office and get the laptops reconnected again I realized I forgot my Hard Token at home. Sigh.

This is why I hate RJ45 connectors and really annoying covers on the tabs even more, some of them are fine (open top sides only) but FML for the full cover ones.

The Javelin throw is an interesting event.

 

This isnt news to anyone but me but i'll spell it out. 

 

The next throw will basically lock us in, the highest score we have after the 3rd throw is the highest we can possible get in the event. It's no longer a race with the other teams its just a race with ourselves to do a tiny bit better the next 2 throws because a huge number doesnt matter.

Out of habit I've been cutting the "boots" off patch cables for years (flush side-cutters work really well). If I remove a patch cable with boots from service I cut them in half and throw it in the garbage.

We're aiming to match our 2nd throw (1.5M) on two of the next 3 throws and just trying to decide which of the next two throws to defer.

 

I'm voting for deferring Throw4 to give more time for bunkering for Throw5 but if a GPU event gets announced for the Sprint we may want to defer Throw3 tomorrow

Considering the problems with bunkering doing throw 3 should help fix that, don't want to get hamstrung and not be able to get points.

Reminds me of some folks in the previous unit I was part of that work on aircraft.  They where bi-lingual in English and Spanish.  I notice off hand that at times they would switch between the two languages on the fly while talking to each other.  Though, what I found interesting, a few of them would stop at times to clarify a word as one chap spoke a Cuban dialect of Spanish, another spoke a Mexican dialect, and another spoke a dialect from the south Cali region.  So, they would stop, speak in English to figure out what the other person meant, and then go right back to speaking in Spanish.

:I  You ain't the only one.

 

I just dislike it when at my Guard unit, we get the bright one that wants to snap the tab because they find it easier to pull the RJ45 out of the port.   Our poor cisco cables wind up like that because of one individual.  Lets just say, they made the majority of us in said unit not very happy.

Kind of makes me want to wire up my whole house with OM3/OM4 LC/SC fiber then just use switches/media converters where necessary.

 

May not add much to the resale value though since the next home owner will definitely not know how to use it but not having to deal with stiff bulky Cat5e/Cat6a and tons of RJ-45's would be really great.

I hate media converters more. They’re great when they work but a total PITA when they fail.  We got rid of all ours and just try to use SFP ports for low speed (<10GB) interconnects then we can just use CAT5/6 SFPs or an appropriate fibre (SM/MM) etc.

My own plans I'd use primarily switches with SFP+ and RJ-45 ports or SFP/SFP+ to RJ-45 transceivers but for some of my ideas like running Internet/Power to a shed on the property or something similar I'd probably just pick up a cheap media converter instead of exposing an expensive switch to the hot and cold environment of the outside.

Now 100% on Rosetta, hopefully we are ahead of RKN enough that losing 1-3 mil per day won't matter. I expect it to either play out as it is right now staying close or they are keeping a ton of jobs and there is nothing we can do to stop them passing.

There are a lot of bunkered tasks on Cross country. My pending keeps going up, at about 600 now. I do have some bunkered (not a lot though), and have been replenishing some of the bunkers I let go initially, so not quite at full output. I'll probably release tasks to limit our output fall, instead of saving for later, since we have pretty much settled in at #7. Depending on how many points we drop, assuming we are doing throw #3 on Javelin, I will adjust how much I put towards javelin. I have some old tasks from throw #2 I didn't finish that I will do at the very least, but may pull 1 or 2 systems off of Cross country and put on Javelin.

Oh damn, I've missed the Javelin Throws and City Run due to the hullabaloo in my area.

 

I've been running Rosetta throughout anyway, so thankfully I didn't miss out on that. I've signed up for Amicable Numbers now, and am letting it run on my GPU, is there anything else I need to know?

Just keep an eye out on this topic. Next Javelin throw is coming up soon and far as I know we are doing that one, you'll see a post here confirm it. Edit: Just be aware we only need to hit 1.5 million points in the Javelin throws now so if you see it hit that switch back to Amicable.

Looks like they started up this year for Covid research, I have a feeling this might be bumpy. They aren't even listed on boincstats.com, and apparently they were around before but shut down.

as it's not in the project list.
