GTA V: Real money for fake gambling

In a recent change to GTA 5, of which i no longer play a new feature is that you can spend real money to gamble with in game for me this crosses a line, the official rating is 18 but we all know many underage children play this and so does the developer. I thing the people at fault on this on are Rockstar for a money grab and the parents of the children. It shocks me that many governments allow this practices and have yet to react properly to underage gambling habits.

In GTA Online, players can buy in-game "dollars" with real currency, and then convert their virtual dollars to gambling chips.

The game is rated for ages 18 and over, but remains popular among young teens.

The in-game currency can be used to acquire cars, weapons, and cosmetic items - and used to play slot machines, roulette, or poker.

Some players reported that while they could walk around the casino area, the gambling tables were blocked in their country where gambling is illegal.

Gamers had mixed reactions to the discovery that gambling chips can be purchased with real cash.

Popular British streamer Broughy1322, who was showcasing the new content on Twitch said: "They've done it, I can't believe they've done it," after finding that in-game dollars can be exchanged directly for chips.

"They've gone over the line of what they would, and it's a big problem that they allow you to buy chips with real money, frankly," he added later as viewers debated the system.

Frankly, I'm not even surprised.

 

Rockstar has slowly been growing their cashcow GTA Online over the years, slowly sucking money out of players' bank accounts, it makes for a hideous gaming experience.

Shark Cards have been a thing forever and they slowly grew to becoming a more prominent feature now that literally everything within GTA Online costs an arm and an leg.

 

As much as I dislike Rockstar's economy model - I quit GTA 5 a few years ago due to everything becoming expensive and almost requiring you to purchase Shark Cards every time - there isn't much to be done as it still has a huge playerbase that are willing to surrender real money for this stuff.

Governments gonna slap them like Valve and CSGO gambling. On the other hand I don’t understand why people don’t just mod and get in game money like that. Use a dll injector and farm the trillions of dollars

I tested GTA V when I built my new rig back in Jan... and that was the first time I'd played it in about a year and not played it since.

 

The whole game has gone down the toilet, it's the worst kind of grind fest to do anything online... I refuse to pander to this insipid practice of trying to con people out of their money. So I won't play it anymore... their loss.

 

Rockstar are rapidly becoming a real competitor to EA for the title of gaming company you would most like to take out back and put a bullet in their head for good of all gamers.

System 1: Gigabyte Aorus B450 Pro, Ryzen 5 2600X, 32GB Corsair Vengeance 3200mhz, Sapphire 5700XT, 250GB NVME WD Black, 2x Crucial MX5001TB, 2x Seagate 3TB, H115i AIO, Sharkoon BW9000 case with corsair ML fans, EVGA G2 Gold 650W Modular PSU, liteon bluray/dvd/rw.. Belgium banned all forms of in game gambling... UK just ruled that as the law currently stands... things like the Fifa loot boxes (and this GTA V casino) are 'technically' not gambling as the law isn't sufficiently clear regarding digital goods.

 

So let's hope they do something to amend the law to ban this nasty insidious practice.

Yes they are "Technically" not gambling but we all know it is and for young people it builds habits they are not smart enough to recognize and bad and unhealthy.

They sell vehicles for in game currency, and they sell in game currency for real money. Of course free to play methods to acquire currency is gonna be horrendous, and of course the most expensive items are gonna be unbalanced AF. Consequently, it's obvious to everyone, everyones dog and everyones mother including every single person working at rockstar including the janitor. That cheating and hacking is going to be just a few % less than universal.

I quit playing after months of just having a hacked client and slowly spawning money in and forgetting to disable my client on a new update so they banned me
I spent my 6 or 7 months actually grinding.. I mean with groups of often 5 or 6 people to do things and got no where so we all started duping cars which when that became to difficult most of us quit playing. Then came PC, got a hacked client and only ever spawned money in because the only thing I ever liked doing in GTA V was dicking around with buddies with the new content. I'll stick to modded servers on FiveM from now on.. still on edge about RPing in GTA V, modern RP is not quite what I find fun in RP without any twist such as what DayZ offers.

I stopped playing GTA because of all the flying bikes and sci-fi Saint's Row BS they had been adding that was ruining the "immersion" of being a criminal. I bought the game so I could steal cars (you can't even keep high end cars even though it's in the name of the game) robbing banks, making money from jobs and occasionally goofing off and running over your friends at 100 mph.

 

I've never bought into their business model of you need to pay us money since I was generally disinterested in most of what they added to the game. Anything that they added that I thought was cool was locked behind a pay wall of needing to buy something else that I didn't want because it was not as cool (and absurdly expensive). I've never bought a shark card and as far as I'm concerned, they haven't done anything to deserve my money.

 

I'm actually okay with casinos being in the game because it's not outlandish to have one in this type of game, I do however have an issue with the fact that real money can be added to play at these casinos. Real life casinos are regulated by law (at least the ones that I'm aware of) so that there are at least chances that you will win once in every so many games, and the chances are disclosed to you.

This right here. No "think of the children" memes here. It's an adult oriented game, aimed at adults, advertised to adults, and at this point EVERYONE knows that GTA is an adult type of game, even if you don't play games, it's been all over the news at one point or another for multiple "do video games promote violence" stories. So using any of those "but think of the children" arguments is weak at best. I don't play GTA V anymore myself, been a few years at this point, so I have nothing invested in it. Fortnite makes sense for these arguments as it's a game aimed and advertised to kids. Also, yes you are gambling with in-game currency, but you don't HAVE to spend real $$ to get the in-game currency. Plus, you can't cash out for any real world money/value. Also, you only win potentially more in-game currency and possibly a vehicle which you could just buy outright in the game already. So it's not illegal. Stop getting it twisted. If you had to spend real $$ for GTA Casino Bucks to play at the casino and that's the only way to gamble there, then yea, that would align more with real gambling and loot boxes. IT'S LITERALLY THE SAME AS IN SAN ANDREAS WHICH HAD CASINOS EXCEPT YOU CAN *ALSO* BUY MORE IN GAME CURRENCY IF YOU RUN OUT (but obviously more modernized). Don't see anything illegal there, or even really wrong. And looks like the laws agree...

My personal theory is they saw the writing on the wall during the last two years and this is one last major cash grab to hoover up as much money as possible before the laws forcing age limits and gambling regulation come down on top of the video game industry.

Good ol GTA generating more controversy except this time they may have fucked it. Even I can't support literal in game gambling supported by microtransactions. (Not that i would ever buy a shark card)
