Elon Musk's Neuralink Has Applied to the FDA for Human Trials

NeuraLink, a company set up by Elon Musk to explore ways to connect the human brain to a computer interface, has applied to US regulators to start trialling its device on humans.

The system has been tested on a monkey that was able to control a computer with its brain, according to Mr Musk.

The firm said it wanted to focus on patients with severe neurological conditions.

But ultimately Mr Musk envisions a future of "superhuman cognition".

While I think it will probably take at least a decade or so for this to get approved, and probably even longer to hit the mainstream, I do like where this is going. Elon Musk says that he plans to achieve this superhuman cognition by using the interface to make the human brain work with AI, or just open up the brain to more sources of information, kind of like having access to a smartphone. It should be worth noting that this part is currently just an idea, with no evidence to back it up.

The device the firm has developed consists of a tiny probe containing more than 3,000 electrodes attached to flexible threads - thinner than a human hair - which can then monitor the activity of 1,000 neurons.

The advantage of this system, according to the firm, is that it would be able to target very specific areas of the brain, which would make it surgically safer. It would also be able to analyse recordings using machine learning, which would then work out what type of stimulation to give a patient.

NeuraLink did not explain how the system translated brain activity or how the device was able to stimulate brain cells.

I think this will have huge implications for medicine, especially for brain diseases that  cannot be fixed easily today.

The plans they describe will require many years of work to deal with technical and ethical challenges, but the technology could be a big step in working to alleviate certain serious medical conditions like epilepsy and Parkinson's."

So despite the long road ahead for Neuralink, I still think that this is a very interesting so far and I hope that the trials will go well for them.

Not really a fan until social stigma changes. I'm sure everyone has had at least one thought that someone would take offense to. "How would I rob that bank if it was me" or "that girl with that one guy is hot". People can get a bit outraged over damageless thoughts in text to begin with; To share thoughts, potentially instantly and without too much control, would be chaos.

VSauce on Mind Field highlighted and interviewed a patient that already has an interface implanted into his brain which he uses to control prosthetics. This was a couple years ago too so I don’t think it will take a decade to get approved if there has already been similar devices already in use.

I wouldn't recommend surgery to implant this device for people who don't really need it. Brain surgery is pretty invasive tbh.

Hard pass from me. I can see this being good for people with mental issues like dementia or autism spectrum disorders, but then everyone will want the same advantage of having instant access to knowledge and not having to work for it (or having to pay more than they have the ability to do so for access).

Theoretically you don't need surgery. The brain/nervous system is "plastic", and could be retrained for any nerve ending to have any use/effect (for example your shoulder nerves to control a replacement prosthetic hand). What requires the surgery is access/forcing existing neurons/thoughts... Hmmm. ?

I have issues with this concept,  people in general are bad critical thinkers (it goes against survival instincts), imagine giving them access to the internet in such amounts unimpeded.

If it’s something to restore function in some of the higher centers like BA 3,1,2 (primary somatosensory area) or BA 4 (primary motor area), etc, in order to help stroke patients, it’ll revolutionize medical treatments. 

 

But of course there’s a concern about securing these implants. An artificial pacemaker can be hacked, what’s stopping a hacker with an ill-will to induce excessive action potentials in a specific cortical area or induce a new lesion?
