Intel renames their Kaby Lake Pentiums

NumLock21

The people over at Intel has too much time on their hands and decided to rename their Kaby Lake Pentium brand from Pentium to Pentium Gold. This is the same naming scheme, they did with their Intel Xeon Scalable processor, where it comes in Xeon Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze. For the Pentium line up, Pentium Gold will be that the very top, while their SoC code name "Gemini Lake" will be branded as Pentium Silver. Celeron will keep its name and will not be renamed to Celeron bronze or anything. There is zero difference between the old Kaby Lake Pentium compared to the "new" Kaby Lake Pentium Gold. What you do get is a new cpu sticker with a gold trim and a the word "Pentium Gold" on the cpu box.

Oh hey, look, further evidence that Intel's gameplan is to foist their server side upgrade schemes onto the rest of the market.

Unless you're a moron who would buy a pentium over something else because "Oh it says GOLD is must be good!" then the changing in the names really doesn't matter at all.

For those tasks I wouldnt consider a new chip at all. Old and used OEM desktops can do the job at much lower prices.

It's more why are they even releasing them? Everyone could use more than 2 threads. The bar should have been raised every generation not kept at the same level.

No, the bar for requirements should lower. When you work smarter by making everything work more efficiently rather than let Moore's Law take care of it, everyone benefits.

You only resort to multithreading when:

  • You actually have an embarrassingly parallel problem
  • All other options to squeeze more performance out take more effort.

Multithreading isn't an easy thing to. There are plenty of pitfalls that make it easy to screw things up.

EDIT: Though multitasking is a valid use case.

Oh and I presume AMD will now add the word Gold to their line up as well.

I worked for a company called Biomark. They had a CNC working off an old quadcore, likely an early gen i5. They moved to a 2c/2t Sky pentium, and came to find out, the faster single core perf of that pentium relieved a bottleneck that the old system was.

Seriously people do no realize how cpu and ram intensive Excel can be in an enterprise environment. When i was hired one thing to fix was "slow excel"

Turned out everyone had 32bit excel installed which can only utilize 2gb of ram.

Most people don't use Excel in that kind of use case, so I don't blame them.

And then people are going to complain that Intel is further giving customers the shaft because now they can't change their CPU.
