The tech industry is losing patience with Microsoft over Windows 10 updates / Re-release of Win 10 v1809 still plagued with issues

Since I started turning my PC off at night (usually a regular time) back in 2015, I have had one issue with updates annoying me with a restart.   That's one issue in 3 years for a regular user.

 

I get that restarts can be annoying, I get that the update system is broken to a degree for certain users, that is the nature of updates to products via the internet.  But It is that way and will be that way due to the nature of the beast.   This is not going to change anytime soon.  It's not something MS or Apple or canonical can just change by doing something different, and to be honest I find it a bit scary that a forum full of tech enthusiasts don't understand the bigger issues that dictate a lot of this.

These discussions are getting ridiculous and go no where.  For the most part forum users are suffering cognitive bias as they are always the goto people when there is a problem. We are the people who take an interest and go looking for articles on said issues.   When was the last time someone came up to you and said, "hey, my pc is working fine, no need to worry today"?  They don't, not because it doesn't happen but because no one cares to do that. 

 

I want data, I want the percentage of updates that fail.  Compare all the leading OS's.  and causes. I don't want to read opinion pieces from media.

Only among enthusiasts. Which likely still means not enough support from debs to be a viable alternative for most people

It's a hot mess right now. We're almost in December and the October update is still wonky.

 

I've been spared so far but I can't wait to wake up to a full office being completely down because of a borked W10 update in the near future. They are clearly using us as guinea pig and I don't find it funny. They are rushing updates out to meet their schedule and they don't have the necessary Q&A personnel to test is because, well, they fired so many people in the last couple of years.

As much as I like and I advocate for Office 365, I don't appreciate how they are treating their flagship product. Moving the Windows division under the Azure division should tell where their priorities reside at the moment.

I still believe Windows 10 when you invest time on it to adjust settings, edit some stuff behavior, like revive windows photo viewer, replace groover with media player classic, disable all xbox related junk, disable cortana, get classic shell, enable back the windows search bar, disable notification, disable windows stock sounds, disable security notification and all just to resume... will be the best possible OS.

 

But that does take do all that stuff which is not easy for novices... and I must agree even I had issues with Windows Update, on my laptop it always is failing to update stuff for the most random reasons and on desktop it's better but I was one of those users who got for 2 whole days the annoying YOUR WINDOWS 10 PRO IS EXPIRING! screen taking over every 5 minutes until it got fixed.

 

So yeah Microsoft still has the best OS as long as you're patient to edit it and ever so slowly we get welcome new features on updates like the first ever native explorer.exe dark theme... but that also comes alongside a bunch of broken junk.

The really people that matter as customers (not us peons) get LTSB which with out any additional configuration gives you more control over updates and doens't ignore GP settings. For mission critical hardware, signage, etc.

I can tell you my entire IT dept would gladly switch to Linux in a heartbeat if:

a. it could be mass deployed easily

b. all needed things would work on it just fine

c. the GUI was easy enough to use that the users wouldn't care.

Currently my windows 10 is experience BSODs every 20-30 mins on average.

Im at my wits end, nothing is stable or running well, W10 LTSB has issues,  1803 issues, 1809 is a disaster full of show stopping issues.

 

I tried desperately last weekend to try again to get 8.1 or win 7 to work with my x470 board and rx580 gpu but no chance,  8.1 has no GPU drivers or chipset or anything just basic MS ones, and windows 7 cant be installed/configured i cant use usb anything and i dont have ps/2 ports anymore.

 

Im done with MS, just as i was typing this reply my computer froze again no BSOD had to restart luckly techtips saved my comment.

 

Im out of options, i cant use linux and i cant do anything else, i have an unstable OS and stuck, i can sell my PC i guess and buy an used laptop put linux on it and fk me, i cant play games anyway so why bother with powerfull pc.

thats more likely to be a hardware issue.

Maybe driver issue or update issue, because it works properly on linux, and used to work well in the past, my hardware is pretty new and doesnt seem broken.

The update system was already overly aggressive imo.  While I have yet to have a single issue with it on my main rig (and I've been using Win 10 since launch), I am at least aware of the issues other experience, and even aside from them, it's clear something's not right just on principal.

 

Pro offers the ability to be notified when a reboot is required and defer/schedule it for up to a week away so it happens when you want, not as soon as Windows is ready.  To the best of my knowledge, Home just reboots as soon as updates are finished installing, regardless of what you are doing.  Furthermore, Pro offers the ability to defer "feature updates" (1709 -> 1803 for example) for up to a year, and the ability to disable all updates for up to a month, and again, afaik, Home does not.  That's ridiculous and Home should offer the same functionality that Pro currently does.  That would still strongly "encourage" updates, but it would be flexible enough that I can't imagine anyone running Home to have an issue with it.  After all, as I said, I've yet to have a problem, and I am not a stranger to running week long renders and other tasks.

 

Moving on to Pro, it should really offer the ability to disable updates entirely, just as the previous versions of Windows have.  It's not something I would recommend, or use often, but it should be possible.  After all, if you're going to put "pro" in the name, it had better be suitable for professionals, and that means giving them full control over their system.  It should also allow you to defer feature updates indefinitely.

 

All of that however is just the basics I'd consider good practice in an ideal world.  The problem is, as Microsoft has made so very obvious with the 1803 and more recently, 1809 launch issues, this world is far from ideal.  Given the poor quality control they've demonstrated, it's nothing short of essential that they add the level of control I've described above immediately to allow people to protect themselves from Microsoft's own incompetence.  Verily, this doesn't absolve Microsoft of any responsibility, and nor does it solve the problem of their updates being garbage, but it would be a start, and imo the least they "could" (or should) do.

How does one go about getting the LTSB version? I thought that required an Enterprise key or something?

running 1809 since the original release. also installed it onto every computer I configure at work (we're a OEM vendor) and I had no issues whatsoever as well

 

The issues are so specific to the 0.1% that it shouldn't even matter. 

 

Though if Microsoft were to make feature updates optional for every single user that would fix all possible problem really. That way I wouldn't have to manually obliterate the Windows Update Service from every computer I make on the request of the customer because they want nothing to do with having to reboot their computer all the time for hours on ends.

that might be the point for me. The people who have issues originally upgraded from 1803. (Note: 1803 was broken for us because of a mailslot issue making network communication between computers impossible)

 

All the computers I build and configure are freshly installed with the latest iso

At work I recently got 1507 LTSB, updated from 8.1. Having used 1803 at home for a while, 1507 seemed to lack something at first, then I realised it wasn't a bad thing! It just feels less annoying. I'm now wondering if the later LTSBs might be a more interesting compromise between stability and feature support, although it is a tough line to tread.

 

As for my personal experiences with Win10, one annoyance of mine is that major updates resets settings. I have to manually go and reapply many of them. Maybe more tolerable if it wasn't twice a year, an annual update would help take the edge off that. Also there are still lots of rough edges I come across. Often if I Google it I will find many similar threads on MS' community support site, with a lot of "me too" and no useful answers. They really need to crack on the small stuff as well as the big stuff.
