Intel announces 10nm Cannon Lake NUC codename "Crimson Canyon" with AMD Radeon Graphics launching in September 2018

AlTech

Intel has announced their 10nm Cannon Lake NUC with AMD Radeon Graphics which will be launching in September 2018.

Some of you may be surprised that Intel is releasing this product this early considering their 10nm process is far from perfect (after all, they were forced to put AMD Graphics in this NUC due to lack of Intel HD Graphics).

Well, I have some bad news for you. This NUC is not a quad core. It's not even an i5. It's a dual core i3 8th Gen 15w Cannon Lake CPU.

AND even worse, it has no Integrated Graphics. Yes, a dual core i3 15w with no iGPU.

Intel's solution to this problem was to put in an AMD Radeon 540 Graphics chip to allow video output. -_-

image.png.3a1a3e1091f05b11120f7c136a56e9d3.png

The design is basically the same recycled box as it's pre-decessor.

Exact Specs are as follows:

  • Intel 8th Gen core i3-8121U 15w 10nm Cannon Lake
  • AMD Radeon 540 Graphics with 8 Compute Units and 2GB GDDR5
  • 4GB or 8GB LPDDR4-2666 Soldered to the motherboard
  • 1TB Sata HDD or User can install M.2 2280 SSD
  • Intel 9650 AC WiFi
  • 4x USB 3.0 Type A
  • SD Card Reader
  • Gigabit Ethernet

Quote

Intel late on Wednesday formally introduced its Crimson Canyon NUCs based on its 10nm Cannon Lake processors and equipped with AMD’s standalone Radeon 540 graphics chip. The new NUC8i3CY-series PCs are the first systems of their kind (SFF) to use Intel’s CPU made using its 10 nm process technology as well as a discrete GPU on a separate chip.

A retailer specializing on custom-built Intel’s NUC UCFF PCs disclosed virtually all specifications of Intel’s NUC8i3CYSM and NUC8i3CYSN earlier this month, so we already know most of the details regarding the systems. The new NUCs are powered by Intel’s dual-core Core i3-8121U processor that works in tandem with AMD’s Radeon 540 dGPU (codenamed Lexa, based on Polaris architecture, featuring 512 SPs) with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory. The NUCs are outfitted with soldered-down 4 GB or 8 GB of LPDDR4-2666 memory and come with a 1 TB SATA hard drive. Users that want faster storage can install an M.2-2280 SSD with a SATA or a PCIe interface.

When it comes to wireless connectivity, the NUC8i3CY-series UCFF PCs are equipped with Intel’s Wireless-AC 9560 CNVi 802.11ac Wi-Fi + Bluetooth 5 solution that supports up to 1.73 Gbps throughput over 160 MHz channels. As for physical connectors, the NUCs have one GbE, two HDMI 2.0a outputs, four USB 3.0 Type-A ports (one supporting charging), an SD card reader, a TRRS audio connector for headsets, and a digital audio connector for 7.1-channel sound systems.

Intel has stated that they are targeting this towards affordable PC builders.

Honestly I would really recommend people avoid this like the plague. It's just such a mini PC with such godawful specs and it's a major dissapointment.

I never realized that NUC's were anything more than the computer you recommend to your tech-illiterate friends or family. For those types of applications, this thing really is more than they'd ever need.

This is great for someone looking for a basic computer only web surfing, skype and office, or a HTPC for a nice Netflix box or use as a Steam Link as well, especially ones that don't have a smart TV. That is of course, assuming the price is low enough to justify this. I don't know the price of this system, but looking at the other NUCs, I find them over priced (especially that you need to add OS (for the affected models), memory (for the affected models), SSD, etc.)

The Steam Link, if there's another computer in the house, is a much better purchase. There's no need to purchase this at $400 (speculation) when the Link is $50 or so.

Yes, but you can ONLY do Steam Link.

While this you an do Skype, Netflix, Hulu, Spotify, Plex, play any video in any codec form, and more. Just get yourself an air mouse with a keyboard on the back, and you are set, set the Start menu to be full screen with tiles, and you are set.

But again, that said, that is assuming the price of the system is very low. If they charge 1000$ (say), than yea, get a Steam Link + Roku stick or whatever, and call it a day. Or just use salvage old parts. That is what I did.

Actually, you'd get less performance since this has worse turbo boost than 14nm products.

I would argue that heat output would stay the same if not be worse since Intel has confirmed that their current 10nm node is worse than 14++

@syn2112 not to mention it also has a dedicated GPU to get displayoutput. And its not a powerfull GPU. (About the same as an 2200G Vega 8, maybe idk)

So heatoutput is higher.

Higher clocks do mean higher performance in many cases. Whether that it noticable in everyday life is a different story.

It's literally the only 10nm chip they could make without tons of defects. I wouldn't call that tuned.

I would rather them make a 8250U quad core NUC for the same price.

Just now, Clanscorpia said:

Honestly though, I wouldn't recommend people buy a PC of that size to begin with.

The performance is terrible no matter which brand you buy and in a slightly larger package you could get so much better components.

I honestly don't see how it could have been a lot worse but I'll take your word for it.

Even for non gaming use, I wouldn't buy a dual core machine brand new in 2018.

If somebody's buying used then fair enough but this is new and people will pay full retail price for it.
