Car Enthusiast Club [Now Motorcycle friendly!] - First thread to 150k! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Don't lump me in with them. I'm an enthusiast of mechanic design, be it engines, weaponry, or productive machinery. Not a guy with a wrench that reads the marketing garbage AFE/insert other "enthusiast" brand that can't legally warranty half of their products.

I fail to see a correlation between people screeching variations of "forced induction is more efficient!!! Reclaimed energy!!!" and anything I've said.

If you can't be civil. Please leave

Edit. That goes for everyone in the thread

Need quick opinions on tires. Falken ZIEX ZE950s (45k mi warranty) for $755 or Continental DWS06s (50k mi warranty) for $907?

EDIT: Bent over and ordered the Continental DWS06s and an alignment for just shy of $1000. That was fun...

I’d get the Contis.

I fixed the vacuum leak on the Corolla and took it for its first test drive since installing the new clutch, and I'm happy to say that everything works properly! The clutch pedal feels a bit lighter, and now there's a smaller clutch engagement point rather than a wide area like the worn out clutch had. The only thing we screwed up was the castle nut on the driver's side outer tie rod end, one of the raised bits got bent inwards slightly so it didn't want to go completely on the ball joint. It was still enough to get the cotter pin in, but there was still a good bit of room before it was completely tight, so when I put the wheel back on and held it by the left and right edges, I was able to rotate it very slightly. Turns out that little bit of play is VERY easy to feel when I'm driving, it felt somewhat wobbly and that tire felt unresponsive when turning, as well as making a clunking sound when accelerating from a stop.

On another note, does anybody know what I'm supposed to do to properly break in a new clutch? I can't find a solid answer online, but I'm sure dumping the clutch from redline a couple times is fine, right? :D

The clutch will get heavier within the next month or so. As far as break in goes, just drive it normally for said month or so. Don’t drop the clutch from high rpm or anything like that just yet.

Also sounds like you might as well do tie rods too lol

General question here, do dealerships sell parts for old cars they sold like let's say 18 years ago? Could they source a part? I've had no luck finding a filter for my transmission. I don't want to walk in and sound stupid lol.

What do you guys think of these rims on the Corolla? They're from a 2006/7 Subaru Outback and would give the Corolla a bit more grip, but I don't know if I like the look of the rims. I'm also thinking about switching from 215/50R17 to 215/45R17 tires, would that work?

Man, America doesn’t get shit in terms of cool cars. The majority of Audi’s RS lineup? Barely. The Skylines that people give a fuck about? Once they hit 25 years, sure. Corolla and Focus Wagon? Nah, have a generic crossover.

smh

I would totally buy one of these if I could, and that front end kind of reminds me of the boxiness of the Quattro S1. Looks amazing!

I would have thought they'd have trouble selling them too, but the Merc E63 wagons have been hugely sought after, so IDK.

sought after != sells well. It's easy to get caught up in all the car ppl saying "we want wagons" when they aren't the ones actually buying them...

What are the sales numbers for E63 wagons comapared to idk.. a C63 AMG.. or even the E63 sedan?

Well I finally got some good news on the Focus Transmission @Real_PhillBert

Bad news is they're still not local, but the good news is I found a place that will send me a box for the transmission, have it shipped, do the labor and send it back, currently for just under $1100 (including shipping!). I have to double check if the rebuild price will include both the Synchros as well as the LSD which I'm replacing because I'm already down there, may as well do it, My previous option was $2000 for labor only not including an estimated $150-300 shipping each way, plus sales tax.

If this price holds, I may bite the bullet and order an ACT clutch/single mass fly wheel too.

I read somewhere that the US allotment of E63 wagons was completely sold out. So I would say there is a correlation between sought after and sells well.
