Man dies while playing VR game

A 44 year old Russian man has died, while he was playing a VR game. He was playing Star Wars VR ,when he fell and crashed his head onto a glass table, resulting in a massive head wound. Not knowing how serious his injuries were, he continue to play the game until he died of blood loss. His mother discovered her son's motionless body on Thursday, when she went to visit him.

Eh. It's news like this that makes VR and really any other emerging tech that get a death loosely attached to them gain a lot of unneeded and unwarranted flak. He was clearly a pretty clumsy person.

This is like those people who destroyed their televisions throwing the Wii remotes at them, this stuff will happen on few isolated cases, not a reason to call on the the technology since getting all set up should be basic to every human.

Because of those idiots, Nintendo started to include those sleeves(condom) for wiimote and give better wrist straps (the original ones were flimsy and overall low quality)

 

Now I'm wondering what would the effect someone not realizing how bad their injury was due to VR would be. A variety of sensors that tracks your blood pressure and heart beat maybe... Or detects things like falls and stops the VR experience until the user check themselves for injuries...

are we sure that is what really happened? are we sure he wasn't knocked out from the crash and then died from blood loss because no one was around to help him? I mean it sounds like no one else was there...

Whilst I agree with the sentiment that things like this result in stupid people blaming the tech,  It is not clear he was clumsy, maybe a bit silly,  but for all we know it was purely an accident that could have happened to even the most stable of gymnasts.

Honestly I don't think the future of vr lies in motion controls. They are (as they always were) a limited gimmick. Now, obviously people killing themselves is a fringe case and common sense can avoid it, but it highlights how hard it is to get a proper setup going without having to worry about tripping or breaking things. Mouse+keyboard, controllers and joysticks are still superior input devices for anything that requires precision and they don't require the user to move anything other than their head, if that.

The official statement doesn't match rumored info in the article, based on the official statement it implies he died shortly after falling on the glass and never got back up (died on the spot)

He died on the spot as in, he did not go to another room or different location.

Died on the spot implies sudden death in addition to at the location of injury, as on the spot means without any delay or immediately. In addition that part of the article seems to be claims by that russian website mentioned given they never quoted the medical report as it is likely not public
