How often do you upgrade?

The Xeons are great when they work properly. If I OC my system and hit a point where I can't boot it anymore (3.8ghz), my whole system refuses to boot with any overclock so I have to run at stock....

I wonder which part of your system is rejecting that speed. The 5650 should be able to get to 4ghz fairly easily from what I've seen

Yeah, I'm really confused. Gonna take the CPU of this weekend and check for bent pins and stuff on the MOBO, and drop in my old i7 950. Might even swap in my CX430 PSU whilst I'm at it.

Because I have a dual socket board I have two coolers and they are a mismatched pair for the fun of it the are the Noctua NH-U12DXi4 and a Noctua NH-U9DXi4

 

I highly recommend either of them they are fantastic and they come with multiple mounting options. They are slightly pricey but that is what I would go with

I use the Phanteks PH-TC14PE. Temps never go above 45c, even when I had my 3.6ghz OC.

God knows how good or bad certain products will be in three years.  I'll just get the best I can afford now and worry about 2020 when I get there. 

 

Last thing you want to do is suffer a shit processor now only to find out you have to replace everything in 3 years or be in the same performance situation with limited choice anyway.

I'm finally happy with my setup, I have 3 desktops and 1 laptop. My main machine is mostly how I want it, my second newest machine is a server and I have a 3rd machine that my blind friend can use on saturday when we have "PC and chill" (not sure why netflix and chill is sexual, I'd love to actually netflix and chill with a girl, anyways we spend the day on our respective machines and occasionally take off the headphones to chat). I also use that third desktop to bring over to my friends house on some Saturday's when someone is in need of a machine for our LAN.  And of course the laptop is for LAN parties for me to use.  I'm working on removing the third desktop from the lan party situation, that or scavange pieces I have around and make it a mini-itx so it's not a huge corsair air 540 to lug around.  I'm actually getting into hifi, or rather headphones and the accompanying equipment and I'm loving it.  I find it to be far more complicated and subjective than PC building, however I have been building PC's for 15 years so it is second nature at this point.

 

So if I had to have an upgrade path it would be to upgrade my audio situation and give my blind friend the hand me downs, getting him a pair of non-PC speakers is what got me into this.  Still I'm not sure if I will give him my equipment or use what I have learned about the hobby to buy him an almost all in one dac/amp/headphone-amp/bookshelf speaker setup.  There is something on massdrop which I may get that is everything together, I have to look into the powered bookshelf speakers with a headphone jack that someone turned me onto a while ago, can't remember what it was.  But I do like the DAC idea as it requires no drivers or software and if my friends audio shut's off that's a high priority problem because his only interface with his machine is keyboard and headphone.  So my main goal is to allow him the ability to put on music and relax in his bed.  He always wanted speakers but seeing as he used to be in an apartment that wasn't possible.  However he did move into my old house with his mom so now he can have speakers.  (I could turn up my denon/klipsch system to full volume and barely hear it outside when I was there)

I'll likely replace my media room TV soon. An older 80" 1080P Sharp that's been taking longer and longer to power up. I know it'll just not power on at all one of these days.

2012/2013 Built original system: I7-3970x, 8gb 1866mhz memory, Sapphire 7970 6gb Ghz edition gpu, 256gb ssd boot drive, 2 4tb mass storage drives. Corsair 1200w psu.

 

2014: Add 6tb hdd

 

2015: gpu upgrade cancelled due to poor performance of 400 series radeon cards.

 

2016: replaced failed 4tb drive with 5tb and added another 4tb hdd. GPU upgrade cancelled again due to poor performance of 500 series cards. Upgrade to platinum 1200w psu.

 

2017: Begin planning on full rebuild but automotive needs have delayed actual part buying. Emergency gpu replacement due to lighting strike gigabyte 1080 ti bought due to extremely poor performance of Vega.

 

2018: Build new 7900x or higher system, switch to at least large AIO or custom loop wc for processor, new case likely Core X9, Memory target 16gb 3200mhz more research needed, replace all hdd with 10tb enterprise drives, move boot drive to M.2 based solution.  Target build date by Black Friday. Switch from win 7 to win 10.

 

2019: Add more ram as possible unless performance is acceptable.
