1080p 240hz vs 1440p 180hz

E4GLE.010

Sorry in advance if i choose wrong topic. Pretty much using rn 2x 1080p monitors, one is BenQ zowie XL2546 240hz 24.5 inch, second one ( primary one ) is Asus VG27VQM 240hz, 27inch. Currently have Ryzen 7 5800x + RTX 3060 12GB OC, 32GB RAM DDR4. Playing mostly FPS shooters like Rainbow Six Siege, currently can achive like 330/340 avg FPS in rainbow Six on my optimizied settings ( all low / off ). That's more then enough ofc since i need 240 only. Anyways. I want to upgrade to 1440p monitor, since i have 4k TV i tested FPS on that one and it waries on around 220/230 FPS avg. with this setup. Overall planning in future to upgrade to 4070 or 4070 Super, still deciding, but now, i would like to upgrade monitor first. At least in my country, 180hz monitors goes for like 200/250 EUR while 240hz ones costs more then 500. Speaking for 27 inch ones btw. From my tests in general i don't see almost any diffirence between 180hz and 240hz. So now, pretty much my question is, should i go for 180hz since i can't reach 240 const. anyways with current setup or save for 240hz monitor in order to have monitor prepared for future use / upgrade.

Yeah I'd say, when you're focused to the game, it should be hard to distinguish 180 from 240. So I'd say pick whichever is cheaper.

Since i'm using 240hz rn, i intentionally downscaled it to 180hz and played few ranked matches, again i don't see a diffirence and since like i said previously can't reach 240 FPS anyways, 180hz seems like more reasonable choice, but again, if i ever make that upgrade to 4070 / 4070 super,聽 i would need to switch to 240hz monitor since, then 180hz will not be enough聽馃槄聽I mean, it will be enough ofc, i can still play at 240+ FPS with 4070 with 180hz monitor, but聽 still...聽

If you upgrade your GPU, you're going to be happy you get to experience it on a 1440p display. If all you've ever known is 1080, you're going to have your eyes opened.

I belive i will, i tested it on my 4k ultra-wide TV but since i didn't have proper setup for it, i pretty much was standing 1m in front of that TV so, kind of not good expirience since i was looking only for FPS results. How much is ,,adviseable" to even do something like if let's say i decide to buy 1440p 240hz, to play on 180hz聽 aka intentionally downgrade monitor until i get new GPU so i can get full 240hz expirience? Or doesn't metter overall? Sorry for a lot of ,,useless" questions, but i literary even never tried 144hz myself, i jumped from 60hz 4:3 1280x1024 monitor to 240hz 1080p one straight away聽馃槄

It really doesn't matter. The FPS of the game and the refresh rate of the display are two different things, no reason not to just run the display at its native settings.

I mean, isn't it kind of waste to have 180hz monitor if you have PC capable of running above 180 anyways? I can run more then 300 FPS on 1080p on Rainbow Six Siege while i have 240hz monitor.

Its a matter of budget.聽

I'm not really the best person to ask at this point, I care very little for refreshrates over 100Hz. I have a 4K 120Hz display and cap everything to 118Hz to stay within GSync range but this works for the sort of games I play. Cranked up visuals.聽

Tbh, i'm kind of like you for that except FPS titles, i prefer as much performance as possible on that, but can play 30 FPS in singleplayer games no problem. Completed Cyberpunk like 2/3 times with Path Tracing on, 30 FPS avg xD For me at least, sweet spot is 120 FPS, above that i don't really see much of a diffirence. Same with 240hz and 180hz, i really don't see a visual diffirence where it is noticeable overall.

Yeah I play all those games but I need framerates over say 90fps. 4090 @ 4K makes this possible.

I'm聽 using modified windows + some PC optimizations myself for better FPS in general. On classic windows 11, i have avg 300 FPS on Rainbow Six Benchmark, while with all optimizations i'm jumping to 360 FPS with ease. Sadly, never tried better GPU in general, was always on 60 overall. Started with 1060, then RTX 2060, and now 3060. If i ever take 4070 that will be my first ,,better" GPU in general.

240Hz would be better option really especially with PC upgrade.

Working rn on selling my current GPU aka RTX 3060 12GB + old CPU aka Ryzen 7 3700X, i hope i can get enough to buy RX 7800 XT, I hope i will be able to get monitor as well soon xD . I'm not that much of a sucker for ray tracking so, kind of don't care about that, only game i actually played with that and that was path tracing not ray tracking was Cyberpunk with all graphics on ultra + path tracing and DLSS on auto, 30 FPS locked. From what i saw so far, RX 7800 XT have better performance then 4070 but lower perf. when Ray tracking is enabled anyways. 馃槃
