No point in updating as you go, as eventually everything is going to have to be replaced anyway.

i tend to buy pretty high end computers when i first upgrade, my last was a i7 2700k OC'd to 4.5ghz i think.
had dual 7970 in crossfire.. and had that running 24/7 until may of this year (about 6 years)
decided to change gpu to a 1080 ti as some of the newest games didn't perform as good as i wanted plus lack of crossfire support, when my computer didn't boot for the second time in a short while after my first restart, so i used it as an excuse and upgraded the entire system (i wanted nvme anyway)
i could probably still have used my 2600k for a while more as that wasn't really that much of a bottle neck for my gaming preferences (i currently game in 1080p until i can afford a new oled tv )

I usually build one and then slowly add things onto it for around 3-5 years, or when something happens like something breaks and as if I fell I should build a new one I use the old parts like a hard drive or a Power Supply but for me its kinda a mix between Upgrading and then Building a new PC

So, you didn't touch your build for almost 6 years and then you built a new one entirely?

i usually upgrade a specific component as it starts to be the 'bottlenecking' factor. i recently upgraded from a Maxwell Titan X to a Pascal titan X. (regret this choise now the 1080Ti is out, but meh)

 

anyway, now i feel like my pc can go for a few more years in this config. maybe i'll swap to X99 once i feel like i need NVMe or something.

I have a store bought Gateway DX4860 (I5-2320) and I'm in the process of funding a new I9-7900x and 1080 TI build. About $4000 for the WHOLE idea.

 

This system I am investing in should last me 5 years.

I've had my iPhone 6 for almost 3 years now. I haven't really entertained upgrading it much. Maybe the next iPhone will be worth it

Athlon II rig had a hdd replacement at one point and heatsink replacement once the stock one was too loud. Ryzen rig reused dvd-rw, bluray, 1 hdd and case.

Upgrading from a titan to the pascal titan sounds insane to me

Phone: I got Nexus 5X one year ago, going to use it until it breaks or something else that I can't use it properly anymore .

 

PC: Just upgraded to Ryzen 7 1700 so I'm going to upgrade my CPU and everything else what I need to upgrade (except GPU) probably after 5-7 years.

Next upgrade will probably will be my GPU after 2-4 years. ( I currently have a GTX 1060 6 GB)

I've been upgrading my rig for a while now (Pentium E5300/R7 240>i3 4170/R9 380x>i5 4460>Current system) but I think it's at a stage where I won't need to upgrade for a couple years.

 

Now let's hope that my extreme urge to buy more computer parts doesn't kick in.

I agree, but it still doesn't sounds like much.

 

The main restraint with my iPhone 6 is the storage. I guess a camera upgrade would be nice, but not worth ~$800 added to my bill over 2 years. I've never cared for the water-proofing, either. I don't see the new iPhone, any phone really, being that big of an improvement. I guess I care most for the 'phone' part. Wireless charging, performance, fancy Bluetooth, design and a tiny more efficiency or optimization don't mean much to me. 

 

If it breaks I'll need a new one.
