My first computer was an OEM Compaq Presario 5420US (from before the buyout by HP). It had a huge CRT Monitor, and sported Windows 2000 or XP if I remember correctly.

During my time in Kindergarten to 2nd grade, I got to use a Dell Latitude from the early 2000s (all black, 2001/2002 iirc).

I later was allowed to use a Dell Inspiron, with an Intel Centrino (for school) - but that thing (running Windows 2000-XP if I remember correctly) was done for when the WiFi chip died.

Then (2006/2007), I finally got my first real computer from my grandad - a first-gen Intel-based iMac (Intel Core 2 Duo), running Leopard. That thing was nice for its time. From then on, other laptops that aren't worth mentioning...

  • An Acer Aspire w/ Windows 8 (touchscreen stopped working for a while lol)
  • A black HP 15-g070nr with an AMD E-Series APU (slow AF but cheap)
  • An HP tx1305us 2-in-1 entertainment PC (thermal issues - GeForce Go!)
  • My first MacBook (black, 2008) - actually decent for its time
  • A Dell Inspiron 17 5000 w/ matte finish (heavy fugly dust magnet)
  • An HP ProBook 6475b - actually still around

And others I fail to recal, up until the build I first logged here on LTT - for any of you who still remember...

Without even looking things up i can remember both.

First Computer: Gained by tech dumpster diving from an office upgrade

System: :Dell Dimension 2400

CPU: Pentium 4 2.4ghz

Ram: 1x 1gb 2x 512mb 1x 256mb all at 266mhz

GPU: 256mb Rage 3d PCI Card

Everything else was default config.

First System I built:

CPU i5-3570k

Mobo: MSI z77A-g45 Thunderbolt

Ram: 2x8GB Corsair Vengence Blue DDR3 1600MHZ

PSU: XFX Black pro 750W

Case: Cooler Master Storm Phantom White

Storage is boring so i left it out, especially since my attention span is short and i want to do other things.

Nothing to see here, move along

Why is the PC mate bad?

From my experience, they're just really low quality boards in terms of quality/failure rate.  I used to think Biostar was the lowest quality (admittedly, Biostar has some good boards, I'm primarily referring to their lower end boards), until I ran into these.  The only ones I can think of that I would rate lower, would be the Foxconn branded boards.

I will say that I haven't dealt extensively with PC Mate, just that from the dealings I have had with them, it didn't exactly endear me to them.

In any event, I think we're getting significantly off-topic now.

First actual PC other than my trusty Amiga 500 was a prebuilt mid-tower.

I think it was December 1996.

Brand - AST

CPU - Pentium 133mhz

RAM - 16mb

GPU - Built in 1 or maybe 2mb wonder

HDD - 1.5gb

Monitor - 15" CRT

Floppy Drive

3 CD cassette changer (6x speed!) (still the best solution I've ever seen for one)

Soundblaster 16 compatible soundcard

First one I built was as below sometime in 2007 (I think).

CPU - Q6600 (D0 stepping)

RAM - 4gb generic DDR2

HDD - 400gb Hitachi Deathstar... (still actually works!)

MB - Some form of cheapo Asrock

DVD - A Samsung DVD writer (still have this hanging around but I think it is ISA so, yeah)

Case - Some crappy cheapo mid-tower

GPU - 8800GTX of some sort (also still have this somewhere around and was still working when last used)

Monitor - Samsung 22" LCD

I actually don't even remember what my first one was but seeing as i still have it sitting here gathering dust i thought i'd take a couple of pictures, perhaps you guys can tell me :P

I'm pretty sure it was an 8800 GT something? on the GPU but not sure on the CPU, i put it into storage when i went away for work (i worked away in a remote mine for months on end at the time) and didnt pull it back out until maybe 4 years later and it wouldn't start so i ripped the hard drive out and purchased a new one.

You sold it?

When I bought myself my (third?) desktop, my parents forced me to give it to someone else. Which is shitty, cause I think I bought it. It was already super outdated at the time, was only special to me because it was my first computer. I think I had just bought my first dual core desktop at that time (athlon 64 x2), which should set the date approximately.

That sucks indeed. Something special like yout first PC... and giving it up like that isn't what you call "fun".

However, your parents might wanted someone else less fortunate than you, to be able to work on a PC?

thing is I didn't really fight it at the time, I was like "hey, how about a desktop" "No, a laptop works better for them". They were probably less poor than us tbh, pretty much all my computer stuff I bought as a kid.
I didn't use it, so I really didn't care way too much or regret it until years later. My first computer was the only one that I kinda wish I still had.

I built my first PC in November of 2014 for my birthday.

CPU: Pentium G3258 (box cooler)

Mobo: Gigabyte GA Z97MX Gaming 5

RAM: 2x4GB HyperX Rury @ 1600mhz

Storage: 320GB OLD Hitachi 2.5” HDD (scavenged from a dead laptop)

VGA: Gigabyte Windforce GTX 970

PSU: Corsair RM750

Case: Corsair Spec 02

I’ve upgraded it constantly over the years and now it’s almost a completely different machine. In chronological order I added these components: a 120 GB Samsung 840 Evo, a 1TB WD Black a Corsair h80i, an i7 4790k, two more sticks of HyperX Fury, a 2TB WD Green, a Gigabyte GTX 1070 G1 Gaming, a 250 GB Patriot Ignite M.2 SSD, swapped all case and radiator fans for Corsair ML 120S, a Corsair Spec M2 case, change to Ryzen (R7 1700, 2x8GB Gskill Ripjaws V and Asrock x370 Gaming K4), another Ignite M.2, another GTX 1070,  a DeepCool Captain 240 RGB, and finally two custom CableMod 8pin PCIe braided cables. The only thing that has stayed the same Is the PSU. With the remaining partS I either built other computers for my family or sold them in classified ads or on Segunda Mano (México’s Craigslist).

ZamoRIG 2.0:

Processor: AMD Ryzen 7 1700 @ 3.9GHz

Cooling: DeepCool Captain 240 RGB + 2x Corsair ML120 fans

RAM: 2x8GB DDR4 G Skill Ripjaws V Grey @ 2800MHz

SSDs: 2xPatriot Ignite M.2 240GB

HDD: WD Black 1TB + WD Green 2TB

 PSU: Corsair RM750

Case: Corsair Carbide 400C

knew nothing about PC

bought a PC through my dad's working place (the whole building needs a system upgrade so they contacted Dell)

paid a huge amount of money for it

get a crappy PC that performs like shit and basically garbage besides the monitor.

I still remember it can play warcraft.

but I cannot open two folders at the same time.

If it is not broken, let's fix till it is.

I was 14 or 15 when i built it.

  • Pentium 3 450MHz
  • 64Mb of ram (maybe? I'm hazy here)
  • Diamond Multimedia V770 ultra TNT2 video card with 32Mb of RAM (Had to wait an agonizing week for this to be released)
  • generic 3 1/2 floppy and generic CD rom (no idea how fast)
  • 10Gb of spinning rust
  •  Creative Soundblaster 32? some sort of Soundblaster at least
  • An Asus MoBo
  • SuperMicro full tower case with 350 watt power supply

Man it played Tribes well.

  • MSI K7N2-L
  • AMD Athlon XP 2600+ (Thoroughbred)
  • 512MB DDR400 (Then 1GB)
  • nVidia MX440 AGP
  • WD Caviar 80GB
  • 56k PCI modem
  • TT Litepower 430W
  • Cheap junk case

I remember having a cd writer and a cd reader (a drive for each thing) and the classic 3.5 sony floppy drive, then I added a TV tuner, this was like in 2004. the CPU was overkill for that graphics card but I played a ton of games with it, I still have it, everything works, original HDD still has Windows XP installed. the only thing missing is the case side panel, no idea what happened to it.

Maybe if I restore it one day I'll make a new panel for that case, it's a real shame tbh, there's also a bay cover missing, the case is white and I don't have any replacement heh

ASUS X470-PRO • R7 1700 4GHz • Corsair H110i GT P/P • 2x MSI RX 480 8G • Corsair DP 2x8 @3466 • EVGA 750 G2 • Corsair 730T • Crucial MX500 250GB • WD 4TB

First build? That's quite some time ago... See if I remember correctly:

  • AMD 486 DX4 @ 120MHz
  • 24MB RAM
  • S3 Trio 64V+ (1MB RAM)
  • Voodoo (1st version) - with external looping from the 2D to 3D card before going to the monitor :D
  • Gravis Ultrasound - no clue with version... but I fondly remember the red pcb!

Pff... no clue what motherboard I had.

I do remember buying a 2,5GB Quantum Bigfoot HDD. That was an awesome amount of space to run DOS 6.22 & Win95 on!

Back in the day I'd know the IRQs of my devices because I had to enter those values manually in games. And I'd know what just about every file on the HDD was for. Now I have no clue any more. But I don't really mind as well, as long as it all runs smoothly.
