Technically the build in my signature was my first build (2014). Before this I had never physically handled a CPU or plugged in a 24PIN connector and installed a GPU.  (Posting a screenshot because in about a year it will most likely get updated)

I'm still relatively new :P things like GTX280's and Q6600's are lost concepts on me

First PC was an old Compaq tower. No clue what was in it. Then I had a Dell desktop with a pentium 4. Then a Toshiba Satellite with an E-450 APU, 6 GB RAM and a 320GB HDD.

First custom build had a:

  • AMD A6-6400K APU
  • Cooler Master Hyper 103 Cooler
  • ASUS A88XM-A FM2+ MicroATX MOBO
  • 8GB HyperX Fury DDR3 1600MHz
  • 128GB SanDisk SSD
  • 2TB Toshiba Canvio Basics External HDD
  • CiT Xecutioner Case
  • EVGA 500W PSU
  • Generic DVD Drive

The APU was later replaced by an Athlon X4 860K and a GTX 960. Now I have a new build (see signature). Only the storage, disk drive and the GPU came over.

I didn't even bother upgrading on FM2 lol, I jumped all the way to Ryzen.

The very first computer I ever used regularly was one of those Packard Bell's with a Pentium 66 MHz machine. Then it was quickly replaced with some other OEM that had a 90 MHz Pentium.

The first computer I could call my own was an HP Pavailion with a Coppermine Celeron. It had integrated graphics, but it still let me enjoy late 90s, early 2000s games.

Then I got a custom built gaming PC which worked well for early to mid 2000s. But it was really showing its age by 2005.

  • AMD Athlon XP
  • 512MB of RAM
  • GeForce FX 5600
  • 10GB + 60GB hard drive

Then the first PC I built myself had

  • AMD Athlon X2 3800+
  • Some A-Bit nForce 4 board
  • 2GB of RAM
  • GeForce 7800 GTX
  • 300GB hard drive

I think I still have the NewEgg invoice for it on my history.

I knew my Dual Core APU would seriously bottleneck the GTX 960, and Ryzen was still a year out, I got the 960 for £140 in the days before the GPU crisis. I would have waited but I wanted to play stuff like the new Tomb Raider games and the APU was gonna die

Haha, nice thread.

My first build consisted of:

APU: A10 7850k

MOBO: GAfmh2-h (or something like that, can't remember honestly)

RAM: 8GB 2133 Mhz hyperx Savage.

PSU: Cheap-o brand bundled with the case.

SSD: Samsung 850 evo.

HDD: Good old 1TB WD blue.

I wasn't planning on buying a graphics card anytime soon so that's why I went with the APU, can't complain too much because I was able to play Doom at 720p 40fps thanks to Vulkan.

After that era I had an Amstrad PC1640

Some sort of IBM PS/2

A Compaq Prolinea 486 (breaks my heart now that both of these were just disposed of)

and then first build some Cyrix 133+ based system in a beige mini AT case , wow did those Cyrix things run hot!

Agreed! If it's a partspicker list (or any build from this century), it's a youngster by my reckoning! :D

I did have a C64, but I wouldn't count it as a "build". I took the first machine I put together for that.

It was an awesome time though... Had the cassette version and it took ages to load programs. And the frustration when you had a loading error! I used my parents' cassette deck to rewind the tapes, as it was no fun having to use a pen/pencil to rewind them.

I'm so happy we have SSDs now! ^__^

My first true custom pc build was a long time ago. It used an old first gen AMD64 chip. Want to say it was a 3200 model (ran at 2ghz, but was comparable to a 3.2ghz intel chip).

I went from there to a Core 2 Duo e6600, which was later upgraded to a quad core q6600.

I think my next machine was a 2600k i7, and then I built a new pc about every year as my yearly income had took a recent massive increase.

My first computer was a IBM PS/2 with a BLAZING fast 16 MHz 386, 20 MB HDD and 2 MB of ram! But my first build was an AMD Athlon K-7 650 MHz with a 10gb(i think) HDD and i believe 2 512mb sticks of ram. I believe my GPU was a Diamond card at the time(though i dont remember much about it).

Secondhand AMD Athlon 6000+ (wanted a 1st gen Phenom but it was way too pricey) and the Radeon HD 4850.

Served me well, though the Athlon was a bit of a bottleneck. Could handle Crysis on med-high settings pretty well though.

New Build (The Compromise): CPU - i7 9700K @ 5.1Ghz Mobo - ASRock Z390 Taichi | RAM - 16GB G.SKILL TridentZ RGB 3200CL14 @ 3466 14-14-14-30 1T | GPU - ASUS Strix GTX 1080 TI | Cooler - Corsair h100i Pro | SSDs - 500 GB 960 EVO + 500 GB 850 EVO + 1TB MX300 | Case - Coolermaster H500 | PSUEVGA 850 P2 | Monitor - LG 32GK850G-B 144hz 1440p | OSWindows 10 Pro.

Peripherals - Corsair K70 Lux RGB | Corsair Scimitar RGB | Audio-technica ATH M50X + Antlion Modmic 5 |

CPU/GPU history: Athlon 6000+/HD4850 > i7 2600k/GTX 580, R9 390, R9 Fury > i7 7700K/R9 Fury, 1080TI > Ryzen 1700/1080TI > i7 9700K/1080TI.

Other tech: Surface Pro 4 (i5/128GB), Lenovo Ideapad Y510P w/ Kali, OnePlus 6T (8G/128G), PS4 Slim.
