Windows Store Games won't have VSync off, SLI/CrossFire, Fullscreen or Modding

MEC-777

windows-logo.png

Apparently if you purchase a PC game through the Windows store app, your gameplay experience could be severely crippled, depending on your system. If you have a multi-GPU setup, you won't be able to make use of the extra performance, even if the game supports it. Want to turn off Vsync? Too bad, it will be locked. You'll also be limited to running the games in boarderless windowed mode with no proper full-screen option. And forget about game mods as well.

These limitations are supposedly due to the fact that the games are a "modern UI app and not a conventional windows application," some Reddit users have discovered. Triple A title; Rise of the Tomb Raider is one of the games to fall victim to this butchery. To read more on this development, you can checkout Techpowerup's article on the matter.

So much for Microsoft truly caring about PC gaming. It seems as if they're more concerned about platform parody than anything else. With other PC gaming vendors like Steam, GOG, Origin and dare I say it, Uplay, I can't see them making any PC gaming sales through their app store once this info becomes more widely spread. I don't understand why they would do something like this. Do they really think people will buy from them instead of Steam and the others??? Now so, more than ever, people will be boycotting the MS app store. Goes to show how out-of-touch MS is to their "precious PC gamers" that they "care so much about." :P

Thoughts, opinions, rants? ;)

Update: Quoting @GoodBytes post on page 3, it seems these limitations may be short-lived or non-existent to begin with:

On Twitter, Microsoft confirms that SLI/Crossfire support is there for games on the Windows, the game itself needs to support it to have it (naturally).

As for VSync disable feature it is in the works.

I just saw this article too. I was giving them the benefit of the doubt, but in the end I was foolish to expect anything different from MS. I was really hyped about the Gears of War remake too.

Hard to believe this is true. If it is they have no chance vs gog, origin, steam. Doubt it's true...

Briefly discussed this in another thread

hmmm I don't like the idea of that.

been using steam and origin for years, and I like the idea that I can access the game files in the folders if I have to. It's needed for modding and sometimes troubleshooting. Or for example I needed to modify KOTOR to support widescreen resolutions. They shouldn't hide too much from PC gamers.

This is both untrue and misinformed.

I personally own the Windows 10 version of Tomb Raider and it supports exclusive fullscreen as for Vsync I don't mind as it seems to lock to your monitors refresh rate not a predefined number.

The fullscreen is not 'borderless window' but is in fact exlusive fullscreen. Any windows 10 APPS are given exclusive priority when ran in fullscreen and as such is the same as running a normal game in exclusive fullscreen.

As for SLI and Crossfire, I highly doubt microsoft will not support it as they have invested their time and effort into dx12 which brings greater pergformance and benefit when using crossfire and sli.

Doesn't mean that the game doesn't support it, that all game will not support it. Also, didn't Tomb Raider got an update to provide SLI/Crossfire support?

Mod and V-Sync is the only thing that won't be supported.

Mod is not supported unless the game explicitly support mods (meaning it has an option in the game menu, to load mods, and has that actual infrastructure), because all Windows Store apps run in sandboxed, Universal App or not. This is a security feature, but yes, that is the downsides.

As for V-Sync, as all Universal Apps are fully GPU rendered, you don't want tearing as you scroll through items and such in the program. So, V-Sync is enabled. It doesn't mean that Microsoft might not add the API in Redstone 1 or 2 to be able to disable V-Sync. So we have to wait and see. If Microsoft is serious about having a PC games section, then implement that ability. If it is just to bring people to the Windows Store, and not actually serious, then it won't happen.

I don't think any of this is in any high in Microsoft prioroty list, because very few people have play games with V-Sync off, as they don't want tearing all over the place, and few mod games.

The problem for Microsoft is that PC gamers are used to having the ability to tinker. They may launch their games via Steam but they also enjoy the ability to browse to the steam folder and mess around with the games files when needed. Whether it's for modding or troubleshooting or something simple like forcing support to a custom resolution.

Oh I know. And we all don't like limitations, even if we might never use the feature. Don't get me wrong, I agree with you.

Sadly, I think for PC gaming, it would require some changes to Universal App platform.

If they open the door to have a user accessible file(s) in AppData with ease, that could be a possibility, where the game can put some of its files there to allow tinkering in the exchange of loosing security (which is not an issue for games), it could be a solution. But that is not a 5min fix. This is a Windows 10.1 change (so Redstone 1 or even 2)

gsync/freesync. here I am about to purchase a freesync monitor so I can disable vsync because it eats frames and microsoft does this.

how am I supposed to feel about that? pirates will provide a better service than they will. oh god, here we go again.

You had THREE decent platforms to copy Microsoft. You could have copied Steam, excellent contender for copying. You could have copied Origin, say what you will about EA's pricing and game choices but Origin is a very solid platform. You could have copied GOG, the platform genuinely that cares about the customer...

But nope, you chose to copy Uplay, the platform that makes their own products not work properly, often not at all, for the customer. And you might be doing a worse job at it than Ubisoft.

I run my browser through NSA ports to make their illegal jobs easier. :P

gsync/freesync is a minor market share.

Even if you get a pirated Universal App, you can side load it, but the limitation is still there.

All I am saying, is that before people bash things down and permanently ban something, lets wait and see what Redstone has to offer. Post in User Feedback app to help boost awareness to MS (post now), and we then we will see if MS cares or not...
